Does anyone else seem to hold water when they drink a lot of protein powders? Ive been drinking a lot of isopure, maxpro and high 5 lately and i seem to be holding water despite being on a pretty strict diet. I think it may be the sucralose they use to sweeten, what do you guys think? Does anyone here avoid sucralose? I found it to be in every protein powder at my store, and I'm thinking about drinking no shakes for a couple weeks to see if I improve. Thoughts? Oh yeah and chick i picked up some egg whites you endore, will eat some tom and maybe just eat more egg whites instead of shakes.

My life got a whole lot better the day I cut out protein powder but if you can't handle that go with what Tim said and get regular ol' plain whey from True Protein

to me nothing taste better than this

Adonis, I might agree that people don't need as much protein as they think, but there is a minimum amount that should factor into their diet
also the evidence clearly states that whey/malto post workout works

Yeah I second the ON as well. If your'e buying in bulk, true protien..if you're looking for just a jug to last you a month or so at a time, ON is number one for a reason.

What a waste.
6 Big Macs and 6 Supersized fries please. ::)
-
Eating only solid meals will get you in shape faster.
-
Stay away from all protein powders...they are just waste products.

Whole eggs are the best - the fat is good fat and full of nutrients.

Taste? thats the only credential that qualifies it as good? lol
just go have a milkshake a mc'D's why don't u.
thats like the freakin Hot-Dog of proteins, cheap stuff.
Read the label...probably starts off with protein BLEND (meaning they can put stuff in brackets like this: [protein, whey isolate, glutamine, dog shit, casein protein] and thats how they get away with selling you garbage in a pretty label. please... ON whey is for budget bodybuilders, the type who look for bargains and would spend at most 30$ on protein but then turn around and spend 200$ a week keeping their car in better shape! haha.
trust me, this is one of the best ALLMAX NUTRITION - Iso-Flex (you can take this all they way up to 1 week out from the show, maybe a bit more. (considering you compete)
peace

are you sure about that? judge for yourself..look at the carb to protein ration

i was being sarcastic, but trying to proove my point that the ON optimum whey isn't anything special. not by a long-shot.
-
haha maybe you should double your protein intake. the more the better. ::)

Most people will cut powders before a contest, thinking your body will burn additional calories having to digest whole food. How much protein are you drinking in a day? If its mostly whey then I would also recommend switching to egg or casein only at the least. I've read that whey can actually influence your blood sugar levels more than you would think compared to other forms of protein. If you're dieting you would be in a pretty insulin-sensitive state as it is. I don't know if this would translate into a 'smoother' appearance though, but it could be another reason people avoid protein powders before a contest...

protein powders=gas

You gotta love ON's pricing, but some say it is great others say if you're not buying Pride or something like that ($60 for 2.5 lbs) you aren't getting shit. WTF is the right way. I am all about top quality, but fuck paying $65 for 2.5 lbs.

Optimum Nutrition is decent at best. Very very basic a company they are.
It's the #1 selling protein powder right now because it's the CHEAPEST(economically). Now if they are selling a 5lb jug of powder for such a relatively inexpinsive price like that then it means they care cutting corners somewhere. More than likely on INGREDIANTS. They are putting fillers and inferior proteins in the mix. It may SAY 'isolate' but it's probably 95% concentrate and 5% isolate. No wonder why they can sell it so cheap. ON is nothing too special. Decent at BEST.
Never really a problem w/ water retention with protein powders using something like ISOPURE or Isobolic or even DC's company...True Protein.
Rule of thumb is...if you're not pre-contest then have your shake(s) whenever...
Getting ready for a show? Then no more than 2 daily and never ever 2 weeks OUT before your show..."just in case".

Ok few things. I do not compete any longer, like I said in a past thread I did a show in 99 and I bbuild for myself nowadays. Currently im 226, 5ft9 about 13% or so. My goal is continue to lose fat for summer, while trying to get stronger, I'm not trying to get huge or anything. I have been drinking a lot of protein shakes recently, and damn I am just holding a SHITLOAD of water! So as of today, my diet is something like this.
breakfast 1cup egg whites with 2 whole eggs, about 60 grams carbs coming from oatmeal.
workout, meal of eggs, steak and potatoes.
meal, chicken and brown rice.
not sure about my fourth meal, probably something like lean red meat, maybe chicken this is where i would still like to do a shake.
dinner, steak and vegetables
late night snack, again not sure what to eat here i typically I do a shake but if im doing food, im guessing red meat as it digests slowly.
I have a really fast metabolism, if i eat less than this i will just lose muscle, so this is pretty much my plan to lean out and get off protein shakes. I will be consistent for a couple weeks and post results later.

i've used both On powder's and most time now use their pro blend which is considerable more expensive.
-
Nitrean.
-
I think the best three are (in no particular order) Dymatize Elite, Optimum Nutrition, DC's True Protein (especially since you can make your own blends with different ingredients)
-
Try em all. This is a life long journey. Find the one that agrees with you. I've found allot give me way too much gas, while another doesn't keep you full. Live and learn, but mixing a good isolate, concentrate, egg and casein is a cheep way out, you'll spend more once than not have to but for a month or more, and you can controll the timing for a sustained release of amino acids. More whey after workout, more casein pre sleep or what ever your body assimilates best. Don't be penny wise and pound foolish. Eating all the protein you needed was a very expensive and messy job. Thanks to shakes, it's a thing of the past.
-
I only get results from protein powders if I add some form of slow-digesting carbohydrate to them, such as oats.
-
they obviously dont work

Jarrow basic, no bullshit, unflavored protein is the way to go IMO. You can mix it with anything, and 39 servings at ~20g. costs about $15.
-
Some of the brand I've used include:
- ON 100% Whey Gold Standard
- ON Classic Whey
- Designer Whey
- MyoPro Protein
- GNC 100% Whey Protein
If I can get a 5 lb. jug of any of the aforementioned brands for $20-$25, I consider it a good haul.
