Trick question. It's all of them. Difficulty: Who is benefical to bb'ing!? :D

Hard to say really, but its more than likely The drug "Gurus" and the people who support it. The Chad Nichols, Palumbos, Rambods, Milos Sarcevs etc.
They create the underlying drug culture by pushing the boundaries. What springs up then is the seediness of obtaining drugs, selling, the entire sub-culture.
Last but not least, the health problems and the judges decisions. The judges obviously bear responsibility as well.
The Single most "THING" that is detrimental to bodybuilding are drugs.

Good answer. What would you do to prevent such escalation? I think it's very naive to think that you can completely eradicate drugs from the sport. The Nubret, Zanes and Shwarzenegger of the golden era weren't drugfree either but genetics and training still prevailed.
Judging is the key IMO.
As I partially agree with you, my angle is more targetted toward the Tattoo criminalized bastards making it a "subculture" like you described. Nothing is build around a "sport" attitude like it was 20 years ago but literally an obsessive "lifestyle"..
Look at those fuckers running around with highliner, hair plugs, criminal records ticker than my mortgage papers and of course they're all gurus..
Lately, every time I see a tattooed shaved head embryo looking bastard I feel ashamed >:(

Drugs do NOT make the bodybuilder-Do they help YES
Not many people have the genetic gifts to take it further, nor do they have the dedication it takes to reach the elite level either-so they "BLAME" drugs or give drugs all the credit.
BTW are you interviewing yourself ??? seems like it

I feel it is more the judging....If they had extremely strict guidelines for judging based on non-chemically enhanced bodies then the use of enhancements would decline greatly....(*Of course the rules and guidelines being enforced to the fullest would change the face of bodybuilding also*)

How else did you expect bodybuilding to evolve? ???
Human bodies cannot pack on as much muscle as the guys today have without the flaws (guts) that go with it. Fill me in - what do you expect of bodybuilding?

Alex is right... It's the Judging.
There will always be drugs... That's a part of it... but because we do not judge all parts equally (We judge Muscle mass over all of the other things) we do not keep the stomachs in check, people are no longer functional... It's just not good.

The most detrimental thing to bodybuilding today is lack of good marketing

I don't know how you could market a "freakshow" to the general public ??? Any ideas?
In the past, I would blame Dorian for ushering a new era of freakiness. Although Arnold, Sergio, etc.. were freaks too, Dorian took it to another level, and I think it farther reduced bodybuilding's already "closet appeal"
I would blame the judges for rewarding this trend, and it is detrimental to bodybuilding because Pros take more health risk with polypharmacy than they should have to!
