Title: Best jobs in automotive field?
Post by: boonstack on April 04, 2007, 07:34:21 PM
Anyone here work in the field? I am a sophomore undergraduate majoring in finance, and realize graduation will be coming soon, and I know that i don't want to be in the office 9-5 rest of my life. I love cars but dont know jack shit about them. I was considering a trade school, but not sure how to proceed. What are the best fields besides being a grease monkey and if u dont wanna just be in the office all day?

I don't know much about the automotive industry, but at least according to the news, at least the US automakers are cutting thousands of jobs all the time it seems.

may not be a great feild to get into at this time.

I am sure someone can give more help than this.

service writter

that is the person you talk to at the dealership and give your keys to,they make around 100-150k a year in a bigger city such as houston

i worked in the finance dept in a large dealership in houston during college and there was one service writter making around $190,000 a year by just bullshiting with people about problems with their car

Check out auto leasing company's. I have been doing it for five years, mainly highend stuff nationwide. It is nothing like a dealership i.e.hours,pay,control over $ you make. Almost all phone and internet. I work about thirty hours a week plus you can do most work from cell and laptop. Pay is what you make it 90% commission. Most average between 80,000 to 120,000 I see a lot of people with finace degrees in this business.

I love cars as well but didn't know shit about them. I decided to attend Lincoln Tech at night and try and get into the field.

Reality of that field is unless you are like a sponge with learning something completely new like cars you won't retain 90% of what they say. Also if you haven't been a gearhead since the age of 12 you won't like being under a filthy car all day.

Not sure if I will help...but here's my experience.....

I started working on things at a very young age.  I'm actually pretty gifted in a mechanical sense.  Started working in a garage (under the table) at 13 during the summers.  Had the ambition of being a Diesel Mechanic at one time.  I went to trade school for Diesel Mechanics & worked on regular automotive repairs/rebuilds for a living.  Have a lot of friends & friends father in the automotive repair industry.  Everything from Aircraft to small engine (lawn mowers) repair.  "In field" Diesel Mechanics (independents) make excellent money if you don't mind laying on your back in the mud.  Automotive mechanics make good money, but it depends if you're independent or work for a shop/dealer.  The probelem with Automotive repair....you have to go back to class (practically annually) for updates & changes in the automotive repair industry.  The Diesel Mechanics field advances in a very slow rate.  Being that they are bigger, they are easier to work on.  Most of the time Diesel trucks = work trucks...so when they break down...they are not making whomever money.  They will pay to get them back up & running.
Servicer writers can make good money....thats IF you've been writing for a while & you get in to a high end dealership.  Basically, when I joined the Marines....I instantly at that moment stopped alltogether working on cars.  I was burned out & realized I didn't want it as a career.  I got tired of doing it for a living...doing it to help out a neighbor, friend, or relative.  Then when my car needed repair...I didn't feel like doing it.  So...there was a time after the Marines I was in between jobs & picked one up as a service writer.  Real easy job & requires no on hand mechanical work...but experience.

If I had to do it all over again....I would specialize in a field.  Like being a Harley Davidson motorcycle mechanic....or going to a trade school to be a Nascar Mechanic on a team.

For the domestic car markers this is not a field to get into.  If you are interested in transporation, you might want to look a graduate program in one of the aviation sciences.  This can include anything from Aerospace Electroics to Homeland Security to Meterology . . . You can learn how to fly an aircraft, design an aircraft, repair an aircraft and so much more.

Review some of the graduate degree programs and careers associated with them at Embry Riddle site.  http://www.erau.edu/er/degrees/index.html

I paint cars. I do it on the side and can make decent spending money at it..but no way would I do it day in day out. Even with proper ventilation it is still unhealthy. I work in the Auto industry on the factory end of it...I lost a job to outsourcing after 12 years. In America the Auto Industry is a shaky future at best...unless of coarse you are a service tech or whatever..that's different. Definitely don't want to be in the factory.

Yes my friend and an old friend are both service writers.  Easily over $100,000 a year.  My ex's husband gets a guaranteed $10,000 a month with a car plus commission as a salesman.  When they met he was the #1 Toyota salesman in the country.  Then he opened his own dealership had it for about 6 years and now is back selling.  He does very very well.

ok i make it simple,i work at a very good bmw dealership, lincoln tech trains newbies to be bmw step program trainees,u  can wk as a learning tech at a dealer during your schooling,i work as a warranty claimer and do cpo and some service writer work,i make out ok,straight up writer do very well, bmw sales depending on how many on floor worst case 60,000 to 80,000,i've seen in upward's of 170,ooo ish, lot's of hour's and need expanded client base.tech's make low end 14 all the way to 30.oo hr max,if you pull 100 hrs you can do the math, key to tech is working the time clock and warranty time without cheating too much.some warranty repair's pay great if u know the repair shortcut's.problem is sometime's these guy's do not take break's and sometimes get killed on engine job's or chasing a electrical problem in a car for day's,that is a guaranteed 40 hr wk week staring u in the face.they are great vehicle's but many pass thru and have problem's from day one.i currently drive the 335 it is a real beast....

I saw an ad on TV about being a Porsche/Audi (insert Luxury/Exotic brand). That would probably be the best. Or going to school for Motorcycle and race tech. If you can draw and like designing or working with CAD and other design software, going to a car Design College is good.
