Title: Should Chris Dickerson be a THREE-time Mr Olympia winner?
Post by: 240 is Back on April 09, 2007, 01:08:11 PM
If the judging was indeed fair, would Chris Dickerson be a three-time Mr Olympia champion?

1980- Olympia - IFBB, 2nd

1981- Olympia - IFBB, 2nd

1982 - Olympia - IFBB, WINNER

In 1980, Schwarzenegger came out of retirement to win in what has been viewed as controversial decision. Based on a noticeable lack of conditioning, compared to his previous competitions, allegations were made that Schwarzenegger was declared the winner based on his popularity and increasing celebrity, rather than his physique. Critics argued that the judges had been changed to those of Schwarzenegger's associates, and that Schwarzenegger himself had been a late entry into the competition.

The following year, Columbu was awarded a similarly controversial victory, which led critics to argue that the judging had lost its objective viewpoint and now awarded on reputation rather than quality of physique. (WIKI)

Key word is "deserved"..... sadly the show is based on who has the best physique thus having the title awarded to schwarzenegger.

Really?

You'd have to blame the era - where a guy like Zane crushed much bigger guys.

If you throw out politics, Dickerson might be a 3-time Olympian, which would historically make him a greater champion than Larry Scott, Columbu, Cutler, and Samir.

1980- Olympia - IFBB, Arnold S.

1981- Olympia - IFBB, Tom Platz

1982 - Olympia - IFBB,  Chris D.

One seems fear enough.

I agree with you Zach. Dickerson despite obvious flaws (arms) built a great physique.. He's legs were phenomenal and condition was fantastic.

I gotta hand it to you Mike.  I can't imagine being obsessed with something so long, and still not looking like you even do it.
After 20 years of bbing, you were finally good enough to place middle of the pack at your first show!

Not too much.  Guys are drier these days, and Dickerson was certainly ahead of his time in terms of low bodyfat levels.  But the average person would rather look like Chris any day.

I think his type of conditioning and balanced physique ushered to some degree a new era that was extended by Samir and Lee Haney, gone were the days of the majorly "top heavy" guys like Arnold, Oliva, Nubret & Columbo

You placed middle of the pack at a local show.
I won the overall at my first state show, after bbing for 3 years.

You took 20 years to place somewhere in the middle.

Props for sticking it out though.  I can't dance for shit, I can't imagine devoting 20 years of my life to dancing just so I could look average at a local dance competition.

Haney had small arms too

haney, dickerson, yates, a number of the all-time greats have had small or weak arms. i know dorian had big triceps, but no one will ever claim his arms looked particularly good.

Those shots look like they were taken around 74th & broadway.

Chris is from the older era of BBs like Pearl and Scott, in fact Pearl trained him and other black BBs. Aside from the physique, there's no doubt that the class these guys have was a big advantage in winning over other BBs with great physiques who didn't have Olympian personas to match. Weider wanted eloquence and a more refined manner in his winners, whenever possible. Chris had it.

1980 had Mentzer's name written all over it.
1981 had either Danny Padilla or Platz.
1982 should have had Casey Viator or again Platz.

I saw the 1980 Olympia contest, and Mentzer literally blew everyone else off stage IMO. He would have probably kept winning it, as he would have kept getting bigger and bigger. He would have no doubt taken it for 3 years. Plats was unbalanced, and Padilla would not have won because of his height.

The way I see it is that Arnold had the first 5 spots won. Everything else is the other competition.

I've seen pics of Dickerson where he looked incredible, his calves were just unheard of for a black guy back then, he had a great back, good quads and his upper body was very good except for his bi's.  Realistically he could have won in 80 & 81 but Metzer, Callender, Padillia, Platz..and a whole bunch of other guys "could" have won as well.  It's interesting to note that Dickerson tried to comeback in the 84 Olympia-might have been 85 but I think it was 84-and didn't place in the top 10.
