Best ever ? Don't you think your being a little presumptuous ?
On a side note, I always think it's funny that people refer to certain athletes as the " Best Ever ". Instead of referring to somebody as the " Best Ever " I think it would be more Politically correct to refer to them as " Best Known ".
Jesus, i'm weird. But do any of you agree with me ?
-
Name one strength athlete with more than 80 world records in a legit sport?

Yes, because best ever implys there will be no better. Records are made to be broken, just ask Barry Bonds. Somewhere there is a guy a few cycles away from being the new best ever.

Nonsense! Best ever means best there ever was. When someone else comes near breaking 80 world records, then we can talk. However it is not likely that there will be such person ever.

Here are some pics of the great man. More pics coming later. Ok, he does not look like a bodybuilder, but he reigned longer in his sport than Yates and Coleman together (no disrespect intended)

It doesn't make sense to be grouping "strength sport or BB" together in the same question. Looking at his physique there is no justification to even put his name in the same sentence as Yates or Coleman.

I am not comparing his physique with Yates or Coleman, but his merits. 2 olympic golds, 10 world championships, 9 european titles and 80 world records. Those merits beats anyone in BB or strength sport....and most other athletes too

pfffft
Matt Duvall can shoulder can shoulder press that for reps...
-
Ed Coan broke over 100 powerlifting world records. at 240 lbs. he had the highest total of any man in history; the 3 men who held the highest total previous to him were 330-420 lbs. he beat his weight class records by 14.5 percent ( over 300 lbs. ). he could also be a possible candidate for the best lifter.

Bullshxx! And even if he could, he would not be able to get the weight up from the floor to his shoulders.
PS! Alexeev's best clean and jerk was 256kg in 1977. Only 7.5kg behind the current world record by Iranian Hossein Rezazadeh from 2004 Athens olympics.
-
Alexeyev was a BEAST!
I agree that Ed Coan is in the same league in terms of dominance of his sport.

I have Coan at #3 after Alexeev and Naim Suleymanoglu (3 straight olympic golds and 68 world records). As #4, I have Leonid Taranenko, because of his 26 world records, olympic medals, world championships AND the heaviest clean&jerk ever at 266kg, and that for a guy who did not even start up as a superheavyweight.

Ed Coan was rightfully banned from the IPF for life, after failing drug tests not once, not twice, but three times.
Good lifter? Yeah. But he cheated, and got caught.
How many records would he have beaten had he played by the rules?
IMO, Ed Coan cannot be considered as the greatest lifter, since he broke records in a drug-tested federation while using drugs.

You are absolutely right, but Coan was a great lifter regardless .....and most likely his competitors did the same.

No doubt. Most of them did. But there were probably some lifters, who squatted 100-200lbs less than Coan, who were clean. That guy may have ended up in the 8th or 10th place. But he, unknown to us unfortunately, is the better lifter IMO.
Why? Because he wouldn't cheat.
I recently listened to Coan on some PodRadiocast. I like his views on squatting depth and equipment.

I know you're not comparing their physiques, however you are making a comparison when you make the subject "best in any strength sport or bodybuilding" and then add that your guy dominated his sport for longer than Yates or Coleman dominated theirs. So if you group them together, don't be surprised if comparisons are made with their physiques. This is a dumb thread anyway, it's like saying, "who is the best player in basketball or hockey?" lol.
-

So now it is impossible to compare merits in an internet forum just because you say so? You are the dumb one if you are not able to compare the merits of Wayne Gretzky and Manute Bol....despite different sports.

Looked like he could have done 220kg that day.... The best lift in history together with Taranenkos 266kg CJ. Amazing stuff.

Coleman or Yates would be crushed if they tried to press the weights Alexeev did, that big Russian made both of those guys look like little bitches.

lol, yeah but too bad people only spend a few hours a day max at the gym, and for the other 22 hours a day Coleman and Yates make Alexeev look like an obese, weak pig

he may look fat but look at his legs in the clean and jerk shot, fat lazy people don't have legs like that.

not likely alexeev was drugfree. 90% of olympic strength atletes in the 70's were drugged; and eastern block countries were cutting edge on use and detection. if he was drugged he would have had no choice in the matter and may not even had known.he was amazing nonetheless. they calculated that the single quickest body movement in the 76 olympics was alexeev jerking 500+ lbs overhead!!
pisarenko was arrested bringing huge quantities of steroids to north america for a competition.

What? Eastern European countries were known for their drug free attitude and tough drug testing...
I think we can safely assume that he was on gear. Even the drugs that he took that were not considered to be performance enhancing at the time, are probably now.

I was with you up to the 'drug free' bit.
then i put this thread in the 'another moron without a clue' file. :P
btw, give ronnie time and his gut will catch up to alexeev's, you'll see damn it! >:(
-
Drug free.
Prove that he was drug free. Just prior to his "amazing" run, it is well known that both dianadol, and turanibol were both developed by eastern block communist nations, whose governments, and therefore "sports ministries' were friendly to Russia. I don't buy the drug free portion, but he was a great strength athlete.

agreed.
by the way, there is no way this guy was natural.
he was in the USSR during the communist era, when it was required that the athletes use drugs.
the soviets were pioneers in using roids and sports. along with the germans.

If I’m not mistaken, there was no drug testing during the time he Vasily was competing so I think your assumption of him being drug free is way off.

Alexander Kurlovich was as well, there is NO WAY on earth that Alexeev was drug free.

Phenomenal lifter. An absolute legend. Not drug free. It doesn't matter.
Edit: 80 World Records. 2 Olympic Gold metals. Plus; 1999 in Greece Alekseyev was acknowledged as the best sportsman of the 20th century. He was also awarded Order of Lenin (1972), Order of Friendship of Peoples, Order of the Badge of Honor (1970), Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1972).

exactly, a 550 pound clean and jerk is amazing no matter what drug you take.

The only lifter in USSR that could have been drugfree IMO, would have been Alexeiev.
He chose to not live and train with the other Soviet lifters, and was very controversial in USSR back then, because of it.
He employed his own training methods, instead of the regular Russian protocol. Eg, he would never do squats with anything above 600 lbs. This is more akin to the Bulgarian protocol.
He also kept the size after his competitive days, unlike other lifters.
What I am saying is that there is a fair argument that he could've been drugfree, because he was his own man.
Did he use? Looking at his results, it definitely seems that way. It would be great to know more about this, because if Alexeiev did it all without drugs, he's truly the greatest.

sorry hedge, but your points clearly indicate that you know very little about either vasily, history, politics, athletics or pharmacology.

Ok.
I've read a fair share about Alexeiev, and like I stated, I believe he probably was using. But it is my belief that he was the most independent athlete in the USSR back then, using his own methods of training, training and living on his own.
If you have info that is different, I would definitely like to know more.
Or just any info on the old lifters like Rigert, Pisarenko and Alexeiev, it's interesting.

We support Louie Simmons and Westside no matter what. We will sponsor the meets he is getting involved with. There is only so much money to go around. I AM glad to see the switch at the Arnold.

If he was drug free, and I'd wager my life that he wasn't. BUT, if he was drug free, I'm guessing if he had stepped on the gas real hard, he would have C&J 700 and snatched 540-560, @425lb bodyweight. ;D

Not to sure about that. I met Alexiev back around 77 or 78 at a gym called Renaissance Health Club in So. Cal. There was a older guy there who was an Olympic lifter back in the 50's from Turkey I think. He was friends with him. One summer while he was in the US he came by to visit my friend. He brought him to the gym. He was wearing a sweat suit. He was huge to me. I was only around 220 or so and this guy was just enormous to me.

prove the current mr olympia, jay cutler isn't.
jay has achieved the UNBELIEVABLE and won the greatest prize in bodybuilding, DRUG FREE :o
see, it works both ways.
there is no way of proving an athlete has taken performance enhancers in the past or present unless they have
1. been busted in a certified correct testing procedure and then PROVEN to be guilty in a court/tribunal hearing.
2. made irrefutable admissions.
this applies as much to a marathon runner, as to the freakiest bber. oh and btw, alexeev's lifts of the time were just as freaky and un-natural as the appearance of the freakiest bber today.

That is stupid logics. Perhaps Alexeev used, but the chances are that he did not use. There is nothing about his physque that tells us that he used drugs. Jay Cutler has a physique that can not be achieved without drugs. It is as easy as that..

Of course many here are shocked to see the physique of a real strength athlete, and not the usual kinds of juiced and oiled up peacocks with no functional strength, that are usually shown on this website.

probably have to go with ed coan as being the most dominant, top of the ladder for roughly 3 decades, one guy who was more than likely drugfree, but didnt compete very much in legit competitions was paul anderson, mostly exhibition lifts, but way ahead of his time.

ed coan was busted for drugs many times . as for alexxev ken patera once said . in 1972 . i could not afford his drug bill . now i can . we will see which is better his steroids or mine .... vassili was a great weightlifter nonetheless ..
