Sit/ lie in a darkened room. close your eyes and start counting 1,2,3,4,.... up to 20 and repeat over and over. Eventually you will reach the 'trance' state you are looking for. It takes a few attempts but it always works for me. The idea of meditation is you concentrate on something mundane and this allows the rest of your brain to relax. Good luck with it!

hmmm but then you have to concentrate on 20 different numbers. is that too much for the brain to relax?

because even getting to sleep, and sleeping your brain doesnt rest, your brain is always thinking, you get like 5000 ideas per 5 minutes.
meditating is focusing on 1 thing, thats much easier for the brain so its resting then, instead of 40 things at the same time.

any tips?

I meditate one hour every day, usualy listening to beta, alpha, theta or delta waves.  I take different approaches each time.  Sometimes I am visualizing some sort of desired outcome.  Othertimes I rehearse something I need to do.  Other times I look inside and try to simply understand where I'm at mentaly & spiritually.  Often, I go through my goals over and over.

PM me if you want links to some useful websites...

Yeah I'm just now getting into it and it's already starting to be very rewarding and I've just barely scratched the surface.  I recommend that you  read Luminous Mind:  Mediation and Mind Fitness by Joel and Michelle Levey.  You can basically find it in any Borders or Barnes and Noble, and it has a ton of supporters and praise including the Dalai Lama himself.
