Attorney General Alberto Gonzales was to be summoned to a Capitol Hill showdown Thursday as he fights to save his job in the face of calls for his ouster over the bungled firings of eight U.S. attorneys that Democrats say were driven by party politics. ...
Gonzales himself has provided differing versions of the events, first saying he had almost no involvement in them and then later acknowledging that his role was larger, but only after e-mails about meetings he attended were released by the Justice Department to House and Senate committees. ...
Critics allege that some of the eight fired were dismissed to interfere with ongoing corruption investigations in ways that might help Republicans. Gonzales strongly denies that, but Democrats have maintained that a stiff denial is insufficient without more details.
Some Republicans acknowledge that merely sticking to the talking points in Gonzales' prepared testimony will make it hard for him to hang onto his job. The committee's senior Republican, Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, dismissed the prepared remarks as "pablum."

Not necessarily. What I'm waiting to hear is the smoking gun re an attempt to obstruct a legitimate criminal investigation. Haven't heard it.
I've been listening to and watching his testimony for the last hour. He acknowledged mistakes. Didn't matter. Witch hunt is on.

lol. "C" as in average. :) Part of it is he just doesn't come across as decisive enough (to me).
On the other hand, some of these senators are attacking him so much, and repeating themselves so often, that it makes the hearing sound more like a partisan witch hunt instead of an attempt to seek the truth. It sounds like some of them simply want to embarrass the guy. I want to hear about any alleged illegality. Still waiting (and listening) . . . .

I see where you're going. My read of the hearings (the portions I've listened to) is they have no evidence of illegality, no one has come out and accused him of lying, and the focus has now shifted to alleged incompetence. Constantly moving goal posts. And no I don't want an incompetent running the Justice Department.

As much as I like seeing Gonzales squirm I'd rather the person doing the grilling was a little less despicable than Feinstein. Talk about siding with the lesser of two evils. Yikes.

And Hatch has just put one nail in the coffin of the alleged attempt to obstruct criminal investigations: the cases are tried by lower level prosecutors and the removal of the U.S. Attorney does not halt or interfere with ongoing cases.

I'm not sure yet. Based on what I've heard so far, the only way he gets fired is if there is pretty solid Republican support for his ouster. He still has support on the committee (Hatch for one). I haven't heard anything during the hearing so far that will result in Bush firing him. And it's the president's call, no? Can the Senate remove him?

Cause anyone who strives for greatness has high enough standards that even if Gonzo was your own father, you'd be disgusted enough by the way he has handled his job to throw him on his ear.

Yes. What law did he break? What lies did the Senate Committee expose today? What I heard today was Gonzales say mistakes were made (in the process, not the result) and took full responsibility. He does not present himself very well, but he stepped up and accepted responsibility for this manufactured controversy.
It is not "in the best interest of the people of the United States" to have partisan witch hunts that remove political opponents just so one particular party can have a head on the mantle. This has been all smoke. Not even the flicker of a little cigarette lighter. Nothing.
I was getting pummeled by four of my female business partners at lunch today, but they're all liberals. :) And when I pointed out the fact that there was no smoking gun today, not even an accusation, they started talking about the "torture memo" and "habeas corpus," etc. My statement to them, and you, is this hearing today wasn't about anything that Gonzales did wrong with the firings, it was about all of the other things that people didn't like about him (like the "torture memo"). He has been walking around with a target on his back since he took over.

actually, what the Repubs said is even though he did NOTHING wrong, his credibility is shot.
So it looks like you guys might get the witch hunt results you were looking for..another innocent man fired for nothing. Schumer even said there were "rumors" of wrong doing but none were found yet...
