Title: George Lynch is the second greatest rock guitarist of all time
Post by: ribonucleic on April 20, 2007, 01:30:15 PM
Exhibit A :

The prosecution rests.  :)

Sidenote: Is there a necessary degree of physical giftedness required to play guitar on this level? Could anyone with sufficient musicality and work ethic play this well? Or would they also need some genetically-given felicitousness of hand architecture?

I see nothing that Paul Gilbert or Buckethead OR a lot of other guys wouldn't do 100x better. To your side note: NO, I bought that line and it prevented me from starting to play for 14 years and I went the drum route. It's all about the stretch dude

Most people can be GOOD at almost anything. To be GREAT, you need to be gifted.

I saw Primus play about 12 years ago...what impressed me was their cover of ministry's 'Jesus built my hotrod' because they nailed it with a three piece band.

However 2 things disappointed me about the show

1. they didn't play 'Tommy the cat' no matter how much the crowd pleaded with them

2. I lost a lowtop chuck Taylor in the mosh

I'd consider that more of a "favor"

lynch is good, he's not 2nd alltime but he's good.  Mr. Scary is awsome.  Funny thing is George can shred but he has trouble writing songs that appeal to the public, even when haribands were huge Dokken never seemed to really cash in.  Back for the Attack was a decent disk but they always seemed second rate to me.  I'd say guys like Vito Bratta and Reb Beach from white lion and winger are on the same level as Lynch is.  You can rag on winger all you want but Beach is awsome, that dude could shred..even on stuff like headed for a heartbreak he was kicking ass. Listen to White Lions Radar Love cover again and pay attention to Bratta on that song, he's awsome.

Paul Gilbert is totally underrated if you ask me.  Mr. Big would have been gigantic if they had come a couple of years earlier and would have been alot better off had "to be with you" never been released.  Lean into it is a GREAT underrated early 90's disk.  I got it in 93 for a buck at Sears and it's the best "cheap" cd I've ever bought.  Mr. Big just spent to long trying to replicate to be with you..if they would have stuck to rockin they would have been alot better off.  Listen to Daddy, brother, lover, littel boy and songs like never say never, colarado bulldog, trapped in toyland and take cover..all great songs.

Lynch can't touch a guy like Eddie Van Halen who really-when he's healthy-can do it all, maybe at this moment Lynch might be better cause Ed's a mess but when Ed is on he's the best guitar player-songwriter around.  Ed has the unique ability to take a riff and make it into a hit.

since I'm a certified Van Halen nut and I can tie anything to the band if I want here's you're George Lynch-Van Halen fast facts for the day:

George recently said he wanted to put together a 3 piece with VH's Mike Anthony on bass.

George played on a couple of VH tribute cd's.

dokken opened for VH ont he Monsters of Rock tour.

There were a few songs going around a few years ago that were supposedly demos of VH songs before David Lee Roth was thier vocalist, one of them was called BlackStar, I don't remember the other title but it was finally revealed that it wasn't VH but it was Lynch's pre Dokken band "The Boyz"

Gene Simmons came to see the boyz in 76-77ish and was going to produce some demo's for them but saw VH and went with them instead.

...that's it for now.

Dokkens problem ironically was Don Dokkens voice. He couldn't sing for shit.

they tried to copy VH's formula for success and didn't do it very well.  Not many bands can be a great hardrock act and write songs that appeal to the general public on a consistant basis, aerosmith could do it, kiss did it for awhile and a few bands did it once in awhile like poison or ratt or even dokken.  Problem was they could only do it for short periods of time VH did it for almost 20 years.

I made a quick mix cd for driving around yesterday I put a ton of old VH on there. No other band makes it sound like they are having the time of their lives when they are playing. I seriously would fuck prostitutes and do blow off their stomachs with VH on.

Jaun made a good move, RAtt was alot better IMO and he didn't have to listen to George and Don fight all the time since they "hated" each other so much.

reach for the sky is one of the most under-rated hairband albums of alltime, it's got tons of good stuff on it.  I heard detonator is really good also but I've only heard a couple of songs off of it.  Ratt has a ton of songs that are supposed to be filler that are just great, great songs.

those guitarists were talented.

The bassist was average but had those cool nose/ear chain going.

Sebastian Bach was incredible in his peak.

Bach is doing a good job of still living off his 15 minutes of fame from 1988.

There's not much good you can say about Don Dokken...

But your statement is nonsense. Listen to "Kiss of Death" on Beast from the East and then tell me he can't sing for shit.  :)

Udo Dirkschneider [Accept] and Michael Matijevic [Steelheart] are the only rivals that spring immediately to mind.

Van Halen Classic, Ratt, Poison, KISS... none of these bands had vocalists who could sing their way out of a paper bag.

Halford, Dickinson, Dio, Meine are powerhouse vocalists of that era.
