I was browsing through a magazine article about Gary Matthews and he said in the article that he "leapfrogs" the stadium stairs.
What kind of exercise do you guys picture?
-
that's just where you jump from one step to the next with both feet kind of like you're doing a long jump.
-
ANY kind of jumping or climbing stairs or hills is one of the toughest, best conditioners & developers out there. Also one of the best for explosiveness and power in sports applications. Popular with football players, etc.
-
I think your referring to when a person is in a semi squat position and leaps/hops from a bottom step to the next. Always staying in that semi squat position, usually all the way up the stairs. Some of the old Eastern block Olympic lifters use to do that. Some football players will do that, but a lot of coaches frown on it. Just like running the bleachers, that most backs and receivers do, but in that bent knee position. . Good luck.

Walter Peyton loved it; i heard he was a pretty damn good football player. ;D

I did the stadium stars today for cardio.....just skipped a step taking two at a time....kicked my ass bigtime!!

Jerry Rice used to do a lot of hill running as part of his workouts.

They ran stairs on Celebrity Fit Club...Warren G made it up and down 5 times, that was the most.

I do a combination Box jump and stadium run as part of my conditioning programs, where we are at we have four sections of seats, it's simple, run everyother section and box jump everyother section 3-4 times with 3-5min rests after each full run/jump interval, this part of the conditioning should only be done once per week, twice only if recovery time is sufficiant, great conditioning, great for explosive strength for getting faster, but very hard on the knees.

Hard on the knees and on the nervous system if done regularly, because of the explosiveness. If you want to do hills or stairs on a more regular basis for greater conditioning, at least some of the time use a standard or slower pace and you'll have less chance of burning out.

Because of the impact.........Sprint work, conditioning, GPP and skills can and should be done three times per week, but since the jumps are technically plyos, once per week is sufficient.

I would suggest anyone to try plyometric training.
Drop down from position 1 (usually a box) down to the ground (position 2) then immediatly bounce back up to a smaller box or bench. Do 3-5 repetitions, rest for 4-6 minutes and do 3-4 sets. Slowly increase the height you drop. Do this excersise once a week or once every two weeks, alternating it with regular plyos up on a box.

Before a person does plyos, they have to taught the correct way to land, you just cannot tell people just to "jump" or they will injure the knees, people screw themselves up not by the jump but by the landing, if they don't learn to absorb the impact energy, they will have problems.
