Paris Hilton has described her 45-day jail term for a driving related offense as cruel and unwarranted.
Visibly shocked and tearful, Hilton was sentenced on Friday to 45 days in jail after a judge ruled she knowingly violated her probation on a previous traffic offense by driving without a valid license.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Sauer rejected the 26-year-old socialite's defense that she didn't realize her license was suspended and ordered her to report to a county detention facility on June 5.
"I feel that I was treated unfairly and that the sentence is both cruel and unwarranted. I don't deserve this."
Her lawyer, Howard Weitzman, has said he will appeal "to modify the sentence."
Hilton's mother Kathy voiced her anger at the ruling over the weekend. "This is pathetic and disgusting, a waste of taxpayers' money with this nonsense. It is a joke," she told Hollywood.com.
Hilton's fans began sending messages of support as news of the jail term spread. One fan, Joshua Capone, wrote to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger asking him to intervene and keep Hilton out of jail.
"She provides hope for young people all over the U.S. and the world. She provides beauty and excitement to (most of) our otherwise mundane lives," Capone wrote in a letter to Schwarzenegger posted online on Hilton's myspace page.
Hilton quickly responded on her myspace page. "I just want to thank Joshua so much for his kind words of love and support. God Bless. Love Paris."
At the hearing, the star of the reality TV show "The Simple Life" said she was unaware her driving privileges had been completely suspended. Hilton said her publicist had told her she was permitted to drive for work-related reasons after the first 30 days of her license suspension late last November, and she relied on that.
The 26-year-old hotel heiress told the judge that she didn't have time to talk with her attorneys about her probation. "I'm a very busy person,'' she said.

Paris Hilton has rehired publicist Elliot Mintz.
The hotel heiress attended lawyer Robert Shapiro's 'Sober Day USA' party last night (07.05.07) accompanied by Mintz, who she sacked after he admitted responsibility for her 45-day jail sentence.
Mintz said: "The rumours of our professional separation were over-exaggerated."
Paris had allegedly parted ways with her publicist over the weekend after she was handed the prison term for driving with a suspended license by a Los Angeles judge on Friday (04.05.07).
Paris has now launched an appeal against her sentence but legal experts do not believe she will be successful.
One experienced attorney who specialises in driving under the influence (DUI) cases said: "Her chances of winning an appeal are little to none. The prosecutors had a slam dunk case. The evidence was overwhelming that she repeatedly violated her probation."
Paris has claimed that police only stop her so they can hit on her.
She said: "I think I get in more trouble just because of who I am.
"The cops do it all the time.
"They'll just pull me over to hit on me. It's really annoying. They're like, 'What's your phone number? Want to go to dinner?' "
A Christian group are planning to celebrate Paris' jail sentence by trashing her CDs at US Hilton hotels.
Mark Dice - founder of The Resistance, who have previously criticised 50 Cent and Jessica Simpson for being bad role models - will speak at Los Angeles' Beverly Hilton on June 5 - the day Paris is due to begin her sentence.
He said: "The kinds of role models that have come to light recently in America are horrible.
"She is an extremely materialistic, uneducated person who rose to prominence because of a homemade sex video. Now we have all these young, preteen and teenage girls who really look up to her.
"We're going to be throwing her CDs in huge trash cans and getting them off the face of the Earth."

Regardless, the only "celebrity" who has made it through a jail sentence none too worse for wear was Marth Stewart, and she was a cold, hard bitch to begin with. Heidi Fleiss friggin' looked like she had AIDS after getting out.
