Nicolas Sarkozy, known for his tough stance on immigrants, and as a political hardhitter in general, won the presidential election in France yesterday.
A political broiler, but also with a broad background, Sarkozy is most known for his brash statements regarding "scums" in Paris ghettos.
Sarkozy faces the problems of continuing restructuring France from being a farming nation to a high-tech society.
Is he the man who can do it?
Sarkozy has vested interests in EU, and is interested in keeping Turkey out of the EU.

Sounds like what we need, esp. the immigrant stance
-
I agree with keeping turkey out of the EU, and the way france is at the moment they don't need anymore dissatisfied minorities. They have to let what is there integrate.

Well, it's kinda funny with O'Reilly and Limbaugh and the Fox Network making fun of France for being pussies.
I tell ya, they don't know shit about French politics over the last 2-3 years.
Sarkozy and his domestic policies have been on the agenda for quite some time.

They have major problems in France....Domestically and economically this guy is a step in the right direction. I find it very interesting that this guy was elected.

Does this mean no more freedom fries and that we can drink french wine again? :D
-
french fries were originally from belgium
-
I think we can lift the ban on all things french. ;D

But they eat them with mayonaise so it doesn't count.

mayonaise is better in my opinion

Eating fries with mayo? Blasphemy! :D
In all seriousness, I hope this dude can stop the radical Islamic revolution going on in that country right now.

The guy (Sarkozy) maybe conservative but it doesn't mean he'll be jumping into bed with the US or for that matter iraq anytime soon. Europe is very anti-US at this stage don't expect that to change to quickly while Bush and Co are in power.

But all reports indicate that he likes Bush and America.
-
I think they want closer economic ties and u might see more help in places like Afghanistan where they can regain some prestige without getting to bloodied.

Sarkozy is conservative.
Most of all, he's a patriot, loves France above all.
I can respect that to a degree, but I also see that it can be a problem with him being stubborn on foreign policies.
But lets give him the benefit of a doubt, he's a new president. Should get a little time to prove himself.

I think this guy is coming in at the right time for France. They have to get their liberal immigration issues under control and do something about assimilating all their North African minorities. I think he will be good for the economy as well.

What do you know about France having liberal immigration legislation?
They don't.
Their problems stems from the North African minorities second and third generation immigrants coming to France from French colonies such as Algeria.
Ie, French citizens with roots in other countries, past colonies.
France had a lot of colonies. Their shit is hitting the fan. Now they're having to wipe the walls due to it. Maybe they should've thought about that back then.
France have close to zero immigration from middle eastern countries, eg.
No offence, but get your facts straight.

um..North Africa.....Ie Algeria and Moracco etc. Yeah I kinda know a little bit as I did my senior thesis on French Colonial warfare. I never said anything about the middle east. When the French returned control of Algeria to the Algerians, they were forced to take in a ton of those people. We all saw the riots last year. There is almost no cultural assimilation.
