Ronne Coleman never got 1st the NPC nationals . Nope, to turn pro he went to the 1991 IFBB world championships (aka Universe) and won the Hvy wt div there . How's that possible? Ok in 1991, the NPC nationals was used to select not only new pros , but the USA team to go the IFBB worlds.Since 1994 the NPC has the Team Universe for this.
Because the IFBB worlds is a urine drug tested event for roids, many of the top guys at the nationals would refuse to test, take the pro card and never go to the worlds. In descending order, ( 1st to lower in order) those that were at the nationals and willing to take a urine test would get selected for the team.
Coleman was the only Hvy wt in the top 10 to be willing to take the test in 1991 and he passed. I don't think he was even in the top 5 that year????
He was around 217 lbs and look ripped but no where as big and freaky as now.
He competed at 287 the last year he won (2005) which is 70 lbs bigger and still ripped.
Considering he gained 70 lbs of muscle AFTER turning pro ( as a full grown man), it is possible he was pretty much drug free when he first turned pro isn't it????

Ron said it himself, he was almost natural when he turned pro.

He wasn't drug free. He was just taking a far less complex drug regimen then he takes now.
-
If he was taking anything it wasn't much as he seemed to feel very confident in taking a drug test. I think he didn't do much more then your average first time cycle, he just has great genetics especially for size.
-
if you listen closely in his first video he admits to taking gear when he met brian dobson. :o

They also take a drug test at the Team Universe and if you beleive all the guys in the show are natural Howard, you are highly mistaken my friend.

exactly, there was a dude at my old gym who finished in the top five in his weight class at the Team Universe when guys like Skip LaCour and Jeff Willett were competing in it and he laughed his ass off at the "drug free" bullshit, he said 95 percent of the guys in that show are using drugs.

No testing procedure is going to be 100% effective, but that is not the issue here. It is very obvious to me that the amount of drug useres that "sneak into" the Team U is pretty low. No question that a few guys and gals do something perhaps and beat the test. Drugs are NOT a big factor in winning the Team U in my opinion. It is also a ready made excuse for those that don't win to blame "drug cheats" as why they lost. To admit the main reason you lost was inferior genetics, diet or training can be tough to accept for some in this game.

Yeah, the Team U "drug testing" is nothing really, I believe it is random and only diuretics [?]
The worlds drug testing, although still beatable as I am aware, is way harder, stricter and more comprehensive though. Certain nations don't really send a team, as they know their champions have zero chance of passing the test.

Ronnie didnt even train for three months right before the show that he got his pro card at.... when he won his first olmypia....he hadnt trained for a whloe year!!!!...all he did was 15 pushups and ten pullups before the show. Greatest BB of all time folks...

Ronnie Is a soldier any way you look at it

If drugs were THAT big a deal, how come we have a boatolad of guys juicin' to the gills and hardly any of them look even close to Jay or Ronnie???
I honestly belive many of the drug urban legends in bodybuilding are kept alive to give a ready made excuse for guys that just don't have it, but don't want to accept it.
The supplement companies really use "that" to sell their stuff. Take the magic pill and gain a buttload of muscle.
I for one would love to see drugs become a NON issue by having the emphasis on an OVERALL look of size with cuts, shape, symmetry and presentation.

genetics, buddy. ron was juiced up in 1991, then turned pro and juiced up a lot more. realize that he was 249 at the 1998 mr olympia and over 300 pounds at the 2005 grand prix. so when you're talking about all the weight he gained, it was after teh chad worked his magic. undoubtedly ron used all he could get his hands on to get his pro card, but having an expert who knows exactly what to take, when, and how much obviously put a shit ton more weight on him.

1) You need the genetic response to drugs.
2) You need the shape to look good when you blow up
3) You need money for, and access to, the top line stuff that works.
Your benchbuddy at the gym lacks 1 to 3 of these things.

well said, my point exactly!

he was almost drug free proabbly took the equivalent of what most high schoolers take in pro-steroids these days

Well, if they're not THAT big a deal, then Jay or Ronnie should've been able to win the Mr. O, 100% natural, while competing against juicers, right?
-
How in the world can you miss the basic premise of my point? Yes, drugs make difference when all other factors are equal. For example, all pros take drugs, BUT, they still look different with a few incredible guys at the biggest shows. Take away the drugs, you have the same guys at the top, only smaller and not as freaky.

217 pounds at his height isnt impossible for a natural imo.
btw. anyone have pictures from that contest where he earned his procard?
-
he was probably a typical 500-750mg. test/week plus 4 or 5 dbol/day guy at that point and is now on literally 7 or 8 times that amount.

Brutal multiplying by 7 or 8 times out of the blue ;)

Who cares how much "gear" Ronnie did or didn't take!
All that matters is he was the most dominant Mr. Olympia
in history. Always will be. There will never be another guy
that wins that many sandows with the level of competition
he faced. Flex, Levrone, Nasser, Ray, Priest, Gunter, Ruhl,
Cutler, etc.... It dosen't matter at all. He is the best.

Haney or Arnold was the most dominate. You could make a solid case for alot of those guys you mentioned to beat Ronnie at a number of different years

Exactly. Especially with his genetics. 217 he was almost certainly natural, or damn close to it.
