JOHNNIE MORTON POSITIVE FOR ANABOLIC AGENTS
Information released today by the California State Athletic Commission verified that Johnnie Morton tested positive for anabolic agents on his June 2 pre-fight drug test. Morton was part of the K-1 portion of the co-promoted Dynamite!! USA event at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. He was knocked out 38 seconds into the bout by Bernard Ackah.
Morton’s test results showed a TE ratio score of 83.9, which indicates an elevated level of Testosterone. According to CSAC Executive Director Armando Garcia, the standard for an athlete is 6. Morton’s test results for “Drugs of Abuse” or recreational drugs have not yet come back.
Following the bout with Ackah, Morton refused to take the required post-fight drug test and was immediately placed on suspension and had his fight purse withheld by Garcia. “I don’t want to hold back his pay,” said Garcia, “but I’m waiting for him to answer the letter I sent him. He received a letter giving him ten days to explain as to why he refused to take the post-fight test. He is on indefinite suspension and I withheld his pay.”
According to Garcia, he is the first fighter in the state to refuse the post-fight test. “It’s a violation of our rules and brings discredit to our commission. No one has refused except him.”
It is unclear yet as to what the result of Morton’s actions will be. The maximum amount that he can be fined in California is $2,500, but revocation of his fighter’s license is a possibility. As for any further action, Morton will first be allowed the ten days to answer Garcia’s letter and once a penalty is imposed, will also have the right to appeal any decision.
Prior to Morton’s positive test results, fighter Tim Persey, who fought on the EliteXC portion of the event televised on Showtime, tested positive for methamphetamine. He was subsequently fined $1,000, equal to 5% of his $20,000 fight purse, and suspended for six months.
