Are there any Aikido fighters in MMA? I know they will have to study other arts but Aikido was their primary martial art. I have not seen any, just curious?
-
not that i know of. they wouldnt get far with aikido in the cage
-
not that I have seen or heard of
-
This is what would happen to Fedor and Couture if they ever tried to two-on-one this guy ;)

Aikido is extremely hard to translate to combat arts. It is mostly defensive, no strikes really, a lot of small joint manipulation and the fact that it takes a very long time to become proficient in it. Although I always thought if someone could bring some of the aikido footwork it may be interetsing (IMHO).

Jason De Lucia claimed to be an Aikido fighter, but he also claimed to be a five animal guy as well. He fought in Pancrase.

Back in the early days, when Renzo just opened the academy, there were a lot of guys with really strong backgrounds in other martial arts who came in to see what BJJ was all about. The akido guys had it the worst. One guy with whom I eventually became friends was a 3rd degree blackbelt in akido, but was getting owned on the mat by guys like me who, at the time, had only been training BJJ for a few months.

What? You mean he wasn't able to pull of a nikyo on you? Are you telling me my parents wasted money sending me to class?

steven seagal would've kicked ass in ufc but he was busy with more important things

LOL
He was too busy defending the rear naked.
He actually knew a lot of cool joint manipulation stuff that could conceivably be used in self-defense situations, but, on the ground he was clueless.
With regard to wristlocks, I've seen them used in gi-tourneys. Guys with collar grips get their wrists bent back and have to tap. Edwardo Telles shows a wristlock sub in his Turtle Guard Series (I highly recommend it, especially for 30-and-older guys). Also, when I used to take privates w/ Shawn Williams, he would put them on me from the guard. I wouldn't tap, but I was forced to defend, leaving myself open for something else.

Fortunately for me, I was able to convince them to enroll me in judo later on. I think they wanted cheap child care during my elementary/middle school days.

Aikido is not functional in an MMA fight, plain and simple...
-
Aikido won't work, becuase, as someone mentioned, it's defensive. Gung Fu guys have the same problem. They are good at blocking, but block enough and you're bound to get hit.
Aikido is good for diverting an attack and running.

I'll bet the Judo came in handy when you started BJJ. When I started, I had a boxing and wrestling background (not very high level at either).
It took me awhile to learn the grips and grip breaks.

We are going to have Mike Swain in town to do a judo seminar for our school. He is in town visitng another olympian, Kevin Asano, who won silver in 1988. Judo and Jits are a perfect blend. Great counter to wrestlers, especially with the gi.

Thin Lizard,
When did you train there? At the 27th street gym? I was there 1996-1997.

I started in 1996, too. At the time Matt Serra had only been doing bjj for a year, training with Craig Kukuk, who, in another case of getbig six degrees, is a childhood friend of Onlyme.

I start rolling with Tom Suppnet up here in Boise. He is Craig's top student or something... Craig actually lives up here in Boise now...... Fucking small world

aikido is not a sport, you will never find a serious budoka in the ring/cage...
people could die quickly

MMA versus Aikido. Funny stuff.

My 4 year son can defend himself better than that guy. That "master" could not believe he got hit in the mouth. That is an embarasment to Aikido. He should be ashamed of himself for even representing Aikido. He should go back to yoga or Tai Chi. A COMPLETE JOKE!
-
I took Aikido a few times way back when...
It was hilarious ;D
-
Aikido is for aging hippies...they don't stand a chance against jujitu

Yeah me to. First you had do bow to the "founding father" on a picture. ::)
-
Training against non resisting opponents gets you non functional skills.
-
too many ppl watchin ufc thinking its the holy grail.....its all american kids that think bjj and mma and ufc is the be all and end all....
and look at aikido and other traditional arts and say...."oh but hes not resisting...so its not real and it wont be effective and bla bla bla ....."
everytime i hear this i know the person sayin it is a child.....with no experience in the martial arts....
if u were to resist when practicing aikido for example u would end up with a broken bone and ripped tendons or ligaments...or a mixture of the 3.....
so ......basically u could only take part in 1 technique then u would be off to hospital
the training is designed so that u can practice these movements and roll out of them....
so that the person applying these techniques gets a chance to learn how the human body moves and can be destroyed.
when 2 aikidoka become comfortable with each other and are at a decent level.....this is where things get tighter.....
there are no bad martial arts....just bad martial artists....
if the old guy in that video was really and aikidoka then he would have not been fighting in a competition enviroment...any decent aikidoka would end a fight very quickly against someone who is punching and kicking....
try this.......go to an aikido dojo and go along with it for half the night (not resisting)
and then try and resist against a decent 1st dan level aikidoka while training ......
i guarantee u get hurt badly .....if he doesnt hurt u its most likely because he prevented it himself

^^^Agree with some of what you say, but it is extremely hard to get the wrist of a good boxer to execute your koto gaeshi. Most people today will throw 1s and 2s, all straight lines. Most people aren't looking to grab your lapel, collar, wrist. Most good state level wreslter will hit a double and dump you on your head.
I got my purple in Aikido before I convinced by parents to let me take judo instead. I studied at a reputed school and wasn't able to pull off my techniques against large, resisting polynesians that were trying to punch me in the face, or tackle me. So personal experience led me elsewhere.
There still aren't ANY successful aikidokas fighting in any NHB/MMA/Vale Tudo fights. I could pull off a tai otoshi, though.
