Model Gisele slams church, asks "who's a virgin?"
June 5, 2007
SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Supermodel Gisele Bundchen stepped into the debate over birth control and sexual behavior in Brazil on Tuesday, saying Church opposition to condom use was ridiculous and women should have the right to choose on abortion.
Gisele is idolized by many young women in Brazil, the world's largest Roman Catholic country, where debate over sexual issues has intensified around a visit by Pope Benedict last month.
The Pope stressed the Church's firm opposition to abortion and contraception and railed against sex outside of marriage.
The Brazilian beauty, one of the world's top models, told Folha de S.Paulo newspaper in an interview that when the Church made its laws centuries ago, women were expected to be virgins.
"Today no one is a virgin when they get married ... show me someone who's a virgin!" she said.
Asked about abortion, she said a woman should have the right to choose what is best for her.
"If she thinks she doesn't have the money or the emotional condition to raise a child, why should she give birth?"
Gisele, who had just arrived from New York to take part in Rio de Janeiro's Fashion Week, also defended condom use.
"It's ridiculous to ban contraceptives -- you only have to think of the diseases that are transmitted without them. I think it should be compulsory to use a contraceptive."
The Brazilian government has clashed with the church over anti-AIDS programs in which it distributes millions of free condoms and Health Minister Jose Temporao has called for a national referendum on abortion.
Other Brazilian celebrities have fallen foul of the Vatican over sex issues. Singer Daniela Mercury was banned from performing at a Vatican Christmas concert in 2005 because she took part in a campaign promoting condom use to prevent AIDS.
She denied rumors she was pregnant.
"Of course I want to have a family in the future. But not at this moment."

However, in agreement w/her the Catholic Church's stand on contraception is not scriptural IMO.

I'm a Catholic, but I believe that the dogma that is puts forth is oftentimes debatable. There's nothing in the Bible that suggests that contraception is unscriptural.

Agree with your "::)" STella, her comments on that matter is more a reflection of the social group she relates to, than the truth.
As far as contraception, I think the churches must get with the times, especially with poorer regions. It is simply not sensible for some poor villagers to have 8 kids that they cannot feed.

I think the church should never be influenced by the world or as you put it "get with the times." But I have not reconciled within myself about the use of contraceptives because God has open that door of science for us to use so I still use them!
I find it easier to voice my opinion about pre-marital sex and say abstain. more later!

Even though I'm quoting him, this is not a slam against Hustleman. However, I want to know... how is it he knows God opened the door to science? Why is it that when people are for something, they attribute it's discovery or introduction to God, however, when they are against something, they give the credit to Satan. I find this interesting, ...especially since the bible says it was the devil that caused man to eat from the tree of knowledge. If you're going to be consistent, ...wouldn't it then stand to reason that it was the devil that opened the door of science for us? It's like a revelation or a clairvoyant thought. If you go along with it, then it was divine inspiration... God talking to man, ...however if you're against it, ...then it was demons or schizophrenia. Why is it always so convenient? </rant off>

I see what you're saying in general Jag and I've seen it happen both ways.

To me the above statement doesn't make sense. For instance, yes the devil was a part of getting Adam and Eve to eat the fruit, but God (in the person of Jesus) died for us that we may live. Just because some things are attributed to the devil doesn't mean all things are.

Whatever incidence should be compared against scripture and God's attributions vs the devil's attributions. Then a more educated assumption could be made.
On kind of a related note did you ever see the movie "Frailty?" Where Dennis Quaid said God was telling him to kill certain "evil" people? For almost the whole movie I was like...this is the most horrible movie...this crazy person killing these poor people....then at the end you find out that God really was telling him to kill them and and they all deserved it...... :) Not that I necessarily think that would happen though.

Try-before-you-buy is a much safer policy.
A career-minded American should not marry until he/she is at least 27-28 years of age. It's absolutely ridiculous to suggest that humans should abstain from sex during their 20s.

You have to be able to think (about it) for it to make any sense. ::)

With all due respect, ever watched people scavenging for food to feed their kids? Ever seen kids without shoes and only 1 pair of clothes hanging off their skinny frames? Ever seen kids being sent to work at 7 years old to help support the family as their parents have 8 kids? Know many kids who have never even seen a school, let alone attend one?
I've seen all that, and lived it. To say that contraception is immoral to poor 3rd world nations where many people can't afford 1 kid, let alone 7/8/9 etc...is unrealistic.
No offence to you, and not directed at you, but when one is sitting online where one obviously has access to electricity, computer etc [meaning one is incredibily wealthy by 3rd world standards] it is easy as hell to sit around and say the church doesn't need to be real.

I want to have a love child with Gisele Bundchen.

With this statement I can agree, ...but only in the sense that to do so would be counter-productive to organized religion's ultimate agenda which is after all, to be the master manipulator and ultimate influencer of the world.
I find it easier to voice my opinion about pre-marital sex and say abstain. more later!
Kewl, then you can swear on a stack of bibles without fear of being struck by lightening, that you're a virgin right?
So which am I going to know you as? ...a liar, ...or simply a hypocrite?
