Title: Was Danny Padilla the Lee Priest of the 70s?
Post by: 240 is Back on June 14, 2007, 06:10:00 PM
Aside from being short, the guy had a nice way of pissing off the brass...

WIKI: Padilla arrived in Los Angeles just in time to take part in the filming of Pumping Iron. He trained for three months to prepare to compete in the lightweight division in the upcoming Mr. Universe competition in South Africa for which he had qualified to compete based on his earlier Mr. USA win.

Disaster struck in Pretoria. Just minutes before the Universe show was to begin, Padilla was told that he could not compete. The IFBB decided that they’d rather have two heavyweights represent the United States - Ken Waller and Mike Katz - and one middleweight, Robby Robinson. Their reasoning was that since Katz was retiring, they should let him try to win the Universe for the last time. Padilla quickly maneuvered to get a spot on Portugal’s team. He felt confident that he was in a position to win in the lightweight category and was determined to compete. After all of his pre-contest preparation, travel to South Africa and hours of participation in the filming of the movie, he would try to take home the title, even under Portugal’s flag. The IFBB would have none of this. Padilla was disqualified by them in order to avoid what they perceived as the “embarrassment” that his potential win for Portugal would cause the organization.

Padilla now exists as a visual footnote in Pumping Iron. The film makers were forced to cut the majority of his scenes from the film because the IFBB did not want the whole incident depicted in the movie.

That story's a reminder of the filtering that occured in Pumping Iron regarding some of the best BBs of the era-virtually nothing on Padilla or Nubret, Oliva invisible, etc.

Lee Priest physique doesn't flow very well. Their placings may be similar but I would rather look like Danny.

Lee's long torso or shortness of leg length is his only weakness

Not just the tats but his chest needs work and his back. Good arms and legs. Decent shoulders. Looking at the pdi shows lee's waist is getting out of control

:o Lee's waist out of control?? what the fuck?! were you looking at a video of the Olympia by mistake or something?  There wasn't one bad midsection at either PDI show.

I have a DVD of when Lee was getting ready for the New York NOC (infected shoulder, root canal :) )  And Lee's waist was tiny.  I know people that aren't super big fans of Lee but still Admire his physique over 90% of the pros out there even over their favorites.

Well lets just say his condition wasn't the best.

Danny P was the Lee P of the 70s.

Similar placings and both had an accent.

Danny did not compete in South Africa.
Danny is not gay.

The two are linked because it is common knowledge that the refusal by Danny to be sexually fondled in South Africa by certain IFBB officials while dressed in an English Schoolboy uniform (supplied by Oscar State) led to his expulsion from the contest in 75.
This is well known and Danny would not deny it if asked I'm sure (as he did nothing wrong).

Throw in arms that are too short for the long torso; big negatives that look strange. Good but no comparison with Padilla one of the top BBs of the last few decades regardless of contest placing BS.

Priest not in the same category re: balance & aesthetics.

Can you show us one photo from the PDI shows to back up either of these statements?

I wonder if all that footage that was cut is still archived somewhere.  I'd love to see the rest of it edited into a "the others" edition of pumping iron featuring padilla, nubret, oliva, etc.

How do you know?

I trained with the guy and have known him since 1977. I've also known and met some of his ex-wives, ex-girlfriends, ex-fiancé’s, his other training partners and close friends. If he were gay he sure kept it well hidden from anyone who knows him.

I didn't know he was married multiple times. Guess that's why he lives out in rochester (to stay out of the limelight). Any idea if he's in training right now and what kind of shape he's in?

The last time I saw him was in December /January, he was in decent shape. Danny is a true genetic freak (except for height) and just shrinks when he's not training. When he starts training he literally responds week by week and can whip him self into great shape in about 6 to 10 weeks.

Flower may be able to offer more recent insight as to his current condition as she trains at the same gym as Danny.

And yet two of them have more fame and fans... thus they matter more than you.

Unless your name is Lee Preist or Danny Padilla...

When you look like that, people don't give a fuck about height.
