Title: GLASS OF WINE
Post by: shiftedShapes on June 15, 2007, 08:32:07 AM
A lot of times I find myself eating a lot before bed just to get tired enough to go to sleep.  Would a glass of wine do a better job with less calories?

A small glass from time to time is supposed to actually be beneficial to your system. HOWEVER if you can keep from becoming a wine-o in the process, I don't see the problem with an occassional small glass here adn there. Just dont' become dependent on the alcohol to help you go to sleep at night or you're in a whole new world of shit. If you have an addictive personality, I'd consider other options.

I drink 3-4 glasses of wine per week and still maintain a very low body fat %.

I'm not sure I would rely on it as a sleep aid though. Apparently alcohol can disrupt your sleep cycle.

Well, it sounds like you sleeping is already not so good, so how much worse could it be with wine?  It might improve.  Also, a glass of wine daily (or probably any drink with about the same alcohol) is pretty good for your health.  I wouldn't worry too much about the alcohol dependency issue either.  It is true that some people who just drink one glass or two a day are actually alcoholics.  They don't find out until they are hospitalized overnight or go away somewhere and all of a sudden start having bad withdrawl symptoms (but hospitals can and will give them alcohol if they need to).  But the odds are against this.

the thing is I'm a good sleeper, but I am on a restricted calorie diet and come bedtime I can't always go to sleep hungry.  I was just thinking that a little wine migh allow me to sleep just as well as the 200-500 cals worth of ice cream (depending on how much I'm dreading the next day) that I usually use to alleviate night time hunger.

Is it possible to manipulate your meal times so that the last one is nearer to bedtime?  Or how about snacking on cal sparse foods like broc, salads, etc?

maybe I just need to swallow you.

Well basically I already build my schedule around the fact that I sleep easier well fed, so I delay most of my eating until the evening.  I'm really just trying to lower the calories even more

maybe the answer here is I should listen to Squadfather and moderate my Calorie restriction a little bit more and not try to push it.  Is this a sign of the apocalypse, taking dietary advice from Sarcasm?

maybe I will try it one night, and if it works make it a couple of times a week thing and not every night.

I'll look into that, melatonin has worked for me too to some extent, except that I feel like I need more sleep when I take it.

Title: Re: GLASS OF WINE

Try a 1/2 glass an hour or so before sleep for a few days or week and see what happens. Then if that's not enough a full glass. One night's not enough to know.

That amount's supposed to be good for health and is supposed to reduce stress due to the mellowing.

Liquid melatonin's a little harder to find but more effective.

And squeeze one out, that'll help. :o

I've noticed this too when i try to get leaner. The hunger really kicks in in the evenings. Im sure wine would do wonders. The key is to keep your mind busy and you won't think of food.

I never said it would make you an alcoholic; my point was just that it doesn't seem to have any negative effects on him and his ability to stay so lean.

Yes the thing is I could stay up all night working out reading and wutnot without eating, but I have a full time job which requires that I stick to a regular schedule.  So I have to get to sleep, which requires that my energy level go down.

sometimes when I'm in a really good diet groove I can go to sleep even hungry, for weeks or months at a time.  I think that this corresponds with my more regular use of melatonin.

really......do you really think a glass of wine a night is gonna make or break your conditioning?  If I remember right you're pretty lean, this shouldn't even be an issue.  I think this is borderline nurotic-sp-to worry about 1 glass of wine a night.

TRYPTOPHAN.  Best thing I have ever taken.  I was a raging alcoholic for a long time and I couldnt sleep when I quit until I started taking this stuff.  Only recently was it made legal again in the states.

I have a bottle of Mad Dog 20/20 before bed every night.  Nothing like a good bumwine to ease me into a deep restful alcohol induced comatose like slumber. GREAT PUMPS! Doubles as a fairly effective anti-depressant too!

while there's a lot of new wine countries like australia, new zealand, Chile etc, it's usually best to go with the classic wine countries like france, spain, italy, portugal for supermarket wines. There's a surpermarket wine guide here (Holland) made by a wellknown wine connaisseur  which lists hundreds of good to brilliant yet affordable wines, with what to serve them and where to get them. I'll bet there's some similar guide in  the US.

why cant you sleep?  whats bothering you? what do you do all day?  If nothing is bothering you, and you say you re too energetic to catch sleep, then you should go for a fast run for 30 minutes, before bedtime. or get on the bike. red wine is also good, for health in general, i drink 1 to 2 bottles a month.

part of the problem is I work all day at a desk

come home and do very intense workout for 1-3 hours, and I feel pumped up like I just mainlined a gram of coke.

If I was left to my own devices I would stay up for 20 hours then sleep for 11...but I have to stay on a regular schedule and I can't endulge my tendency towards mania.

Indeed.... morning workouts are fantastic. Some of my best memories from highschool were after hard intense workouts on the football team before 2nd period and then you were in a high state of mind for the rest of the day. The best part is when you got home you were tired and could sleep like a log.

I work out pretty much every day 1-3 hours a day on a day off I probably do 5 hours of exerciseof varying levels of intensity (like today I walked at a moderate pace for probably 7-8 miles) practiced on the rings and did various one leg exercises.

I'm not sure if my workout routine is overtraining but I enjoy it and can't really bring myself to do less.
