Because the judges would rather see big, freaky and bloted with they're lives cut in half because of the judging criteria.........I've been waiting for years to have one judge to explain most of the horrible decisions that are made.

Why don't you think of it as 'living a dream'?

Aren't we all going to die some day anyway? ;)

Not my dream, i guess.   Everything in perspective I think, alot of other things to do.
I think the size you carry is about as big as needed, kiwi.   Anything more and people just think your narcissistic.   looking like a fullback for football is a good balance.

But why cut your life in half for little or no return??

Because you LIVE and feel alive during those few years, a day of which will be worth more than the entire lives some people live in which they've never lived a whole day (unfortunately :-\)

Staying alive for the sake of existing is a shame, although you can start over any time I guess

The number of adherents is not proof of an idea's merit or validity dude. There was a time when everyone but one person on Earth considered it obvious that 'the Earth is flat'. Didn't make it true did it? ;)

true.

In those pics taken of him in I think 98' he was incredable, big, ripped, small waist.....he was damn near the perfect Mr. Olympia, then he kept taking a step further and another step and another and another finally to the point he ruined his physique, gone are the aesthetics and he wasn't even that bad looking, now he's almost disfigured all the way around, he's taken it to the extreme that someday he might regret..........same with alot of these guys who played the size game..........way to go judges!

He hasn't looked like the third picture in years

True, but he had those moments when he saw himself look that way and he's seen and achieved more than anyone else (IMO). I'm sure he's happy to live with that, although he's far from done (again, IMO)
Title: Re: A Real Mr Olympia
Post by: donrhummy on June 18, 2007, 12:09:57 PM
Hey, Ronnie '98 had some incredible aspects to his physique but even then he had a bit of a distended gut during numerous moments on stage. I still think Arnold would never have wanted to look like that. I think he'd have been fine being bigger (and having bigger legs) but not at the expense of a tight waist.

Otherwise, what's the difference between a bodybuilder and a weightlifter/strongman? They're huge and some even ripped but usually with smaller calves and a big stomach. Wait, isn't that Ronnie these days?

Hey, think about this: remember those pics of Arnold in his 50's right after heart surgery? Despite being in horrible shape, he still, unlike Ronnie the reigning Mr. o at the time, had NO GUT.

Not at all my friend - both parts of that post are metaphysical truths that are as absolute as a mathematical certainty - like saying 1 + 1 = 2

BTW, the first sentence was penned by Ayn Rand 8) (the 'dude' part is my own humble addition ;D)

guys.. even arnold himself admitted that he would have taken growth and insulin if it were available.. he is at least being honest.. arnold, according to ric drasin (a old training partner of arnold) has said that arnold took amounts that scared drasin.. "dbol by the handful" was one quote.. so we can brag on arnold all day but, the truth of the matter is that arnold would have pushed the envelope and been right up there with ronnie if given the chance..

like ronnie would be anything close to arnold without chad's drugs.

arnold is still the greatest.

do you realize that without arnold, ronnie would still be in metroflex watching dobson walk around in shorts that are too small?

C'mon, merit and validity are two very different concepts, as you know. As for the world being flat, that is one of those 'romantic' myths to illustrate how the age of enlightenment revealed us and our beliefs to be nothing but primitive. That the earth was round was known to those in pre-history- ie. eclipses were a real give away; and their rather 'advanced' grasps of astronomy also show this. And don't even get me on Ayn Rand. She's/was a snake-oil salesman.

/good to see you back.

You are confusing descriptive statements (statements about facts) with normative statements (statements about what is good and bad).

Facts are independent of opinions, while normative statements _are_ opinions. (But they can be grounded in some external frame of reference).

Bodybuilding quality standards are mostly normative- not objective facts about real phenomena.

with a physique like this one , you can look good in at least 15 poses (mandatory or not shots)

With Ronnie's shape you might look good maybe in 2 ot 3 poses only.....

'Come on get serious!'

Arnold was not exactly known for his tiny waist. He is a competitor by nature and would likely get in any shape to destroy the competition.

Luckily he has a predecessor now who will be king of the bodybuilding world real soon. ;)

Still incredible 35 years later.

Imagine a pro bodybuilder today wearing that outfit. They'd have a bulging gut, slightly bigger shoulders and quads and probably stick calves.
