Theres a kid at my gym strong as hell on the bench, 415lb max, hes about 20 years old and 230lbs id say. But all he does is bench and curls so last night hes waiting for the bench and im squatting so i said come on man do legs tonight he said " er i usually do legs weekend mornings"
So do them tonight! Mix it up i said!
So we started squatting, 1 plate a side warm up, ok, then 2 plates aside, i do a 2nd warm up set, he gets under the bar 3 reps, and gets stuck on the floor and drops the bar!!!
Benches double what he squats!! Arms as thick as his legs!!
How pathetic!

Dont know about you guys but my squats quite a bit higher than my bench! Im not gonna give number cos this is the internet!! ;D Ok my Squats 1050 for 10 and my bench is 875 for 10.
And thats how it should be, squat more than you bench.

hahahahaha, exactly, shit 90 percent of these internet warriors bench 500 so 400 is their last warmup set, funny though how you can go a whole year and maybe see 2-3 guys legitimately bench 405 in the gym yet all these guys supposedly toy with 400-500 all the time. ::)

What alot of people don't realize is this is a bodybuilding board. Not how much can ya bench board. Who cares if he is weak. If ronnie coleman just did 135 pounds for squats i wouldn't think twice about it. He is huge.

There's footage in the Pumping Iron book of Arnold squatting at least 465 - it's hard to tell with the plates of varying size and width they had in Gold's back then. Arnold also deadlifted over 600 when he entered a powerlifting meet in Germany in the late 60's just to show that bodybuilders could compete with powerlifters in the stregnth stakes.

as far as benching more than you squat, that is sad. you legs should always be stronger than your chest. Bodybuilding or not.

working out at the koloseum, I have seen probably 6 guys bench 405-500pnds.
most was a natural in a bench shirt did 535, I spotted so I know it's true ;)
And I have seen 1 guy bench 405 for 6 or 7 reps, can't remember but I was extremely impressed. These guys saying they can bench 400-500 pounds probably couldn't get that off the rack and if they did manage to, it would crush them.

To be honest the distance the weight moves in a squat is at least twice distance weight is moved during a flat bench press. Also, in a squat there is no pad to lay on to balance your body. Squats require much more balance than any bench press.
You are comparing two different things here 1) a completely free weight exercise like squat and 2) a partial free weight movement in which the body is stabilized from head to ass. Therefore, since squat require a person to move the weight farther AND require more balance, the weight used on bench press should probably be more or equal to your squatting weight.
Using the "logic" of this thread a bigger muscle should be a stronger muscle. If you say, "Hey the legs are contain much more muscle mass so therefore, the weight used on squats should be greater than the weight used on bench press." Then, using your logic, the back muscles (which are much, much larger than the pectorals) should be stronger than the chest. How many of you 315 lb bench pressers use the same on rows? How often do you make of fun guys who bench 495 but are never seen rowing even 315??

While I respect your opinion Fulgorre, there's no possible way that I can agree with your statement. I'm not saying that there aren't exceptions, but I don't think that it's at all reasonable to say that being able to bench more than you can squat is normal. I think the fact that most people can pull more than they squat, and squat more than they bench speaks volumes in itself.
Besides, the whole point of the original post was to point out the fact that this character trains in the manner of a typical frat boy with no attention to the lower body at all. Assuming that this guy actually trained with squats equally or more than he trained with bench press, what you say would have a lot more accuracy if he still for some reason couldn't squat shit. But since I don't think it's the case that he trains squats regularly (if at all) as shown through him falling on his ass at the rack, I don't think that what you said applies to his situation at all.
