PAYBACK'S GYM DANDY
By HEIDI SINGER
July 5, 2007 -- A Brooklyn gym that suddenly shut down in January must pay back hundreds of furious former members, under an agreement struck with the state Attorney General's Office.
Robert Dreiss and Alex Vasquez, owners of Absolute Power Fitness in Sunset Park, will pay 650 customers a total of $55,289 to compensate them for their memberships, which reportedly ranged from $250 to $290 a year.

Was there any reimbursement made after Victor's Gym closed?

I thought most gyms charged by the month, not a whole year up front? If so, why would anyone be owed anything?

Most small gyms take a lump sum.

If the dumbasses had set up the gym as a LLC or C-corp they wouldn't owe anyone a dime. Just declare bankruptcy on the entity and no one could touch their personal assets. I can't believe any business still operates as a proprietorship anymore.
Maybe Victor was smarter than they were.

All gyms in New York must be bonded. My guess is the money is coming from the insurance bond. It ain't THAT easy to screw people over.

ED is right here. Every new club must set aside a $75,000.00 bond with their bank to have in this case.
