The new BB documentary Raising the Bar 2 is about much more than sets and reps and form and diet. As this clip shows, it's about the sacrifices that it takes to be the best of the best. Often it's the people closest to you are the ones who understand the least.
-
damn bitch is noice in the movie
My family excepts it... thye are all teachers so I cannot say I have a lot that do truely understand it.
Cool Movie btw
-
yeah it's hard to believe that your family wouldn't understand the 300 dollar a week grocery bill, the 500 dollar a month supplement bill, the 1000 dollar a month drug bill, the gay for pay, the twice a day "workouts", the carrying a gallon of water everywhere you go, the 13 meals a day, not being able to pick up the baby because of back pain, not being able to throw a baseball around because of shoulder pain, etc. ::)
-
Stop promoting your fucking video on here noone gives a shit >:(

Sorry about that. Some people do care but you are free to skip any posts by gatomjp. I've put my passion into making a DVD that says something personal and important about the sport that we are all here to talk about and that some of us love so it's only natural that I would post about it here.

hahaha, exactly but it's the truth, these clowns get their feelings hurt that their family doesn't understand the lifestyle but what RATIONAL human being would understand it? the "lifestyle" is selfish beyond belief, if you want to be a pro don't be surprised when an average woman deosn't understand it and starts fuccking the milkman.

Does your family understand why you are a fatass all year and why you spend 10 hours a day on getbig?

No doubt, a guy I know who is chasing the dream stopped talking to his parents, used college loan money for roids and basically put off his education because he was training for a show. He dropped like 2 classes out of the 4 he was taking. When he expected his old man to send him money for tuition and grocery bills, he got financial aid packets in the mail instead. What a waste. Nothing wrong with training but these guys alienate everyone around them.
-
The big checks are worth these sacrifices.
No bloody way in hell they are... much better to get an education, you'll make much more money if you focus on a career.

We knew a guy back in the day who would work for 7 or 8 months at a particular job, then quit to train 4 months for a contest and just get a new job after the contest. He did that many times.
-
How did you get her to change? What caused her to change her mind about it?
When she went to my first show and saw me onstage (also when she saw the "Hell" that i went thru dieting for that show)
you could see the pride in her smile/the way she talked about me and the contest
(she told me at that very first show i did that "she loved me and was never more proud of me than right now" )

you look a lot better now than at 300 pounds man. Seriously, did it hurt to walk up steps back then?

Mom passed away a while back.
Do you realize how juvenile your responses on here are? "I F7%$ed your sister/mom" is 6TH GRADE MATERIAL, squad. The only people on here that find that even remotely funny are the guys who think like middle-schoolers...like you.
Grow up. Get some new material. If you're going to talk junk on boards, tell someone something along the lines of "You're depriving a village somewhere of a much needed idiot" or something like that. Something that involves a little moxy...
-

honestly at over 300 lbs ....my lower back would hurt just walking across the gym floor
(i broke a sweat tying my sneakers!)

I don't get it. Can't a bodybuilder go to the gym an hour a day 4-5 days a week, eat 5-6 meals a day and not consider bodybuilding a "lifestyle"? Bodybuilding is a hobby to me. One I'm more passionate about above most else, but I don't skip out on life to "pump up" and run home at 4 PM to slap a chicken breast on the foreman grill. That's pure bullshit. You have a fucking problem. See a psychiatrist. We have ONE life to live throughout all of eternity and you're spending it on an obsessively irrational, lifetime commitment to get "swole". Monster psychosis, OCD, etc. I wish I could help but not even your family could so there's no point.
-
youre my family, my getbiggers!
and youre so supportive!
:-*

You need an education in order to support yourself and your bbing dreams

I don't think so figgs. I'm expanding this discussion to include EVERYTHING. If you want to excel...not just be good, but be the best of the best at something, considering it a hobby will only get you mediocrity. I'll bet people like Michael Jordan and Lance Armstrong and even Donald Trump missed plenty of family cookouts on the way to where they were going.

Harsh! Funny! And true!!
Son:hey dad wanna play catch?
Bodybuilder "Dad":no son, i've got chest and triceps.
Son:hey Dad, can you come to Show and Tell at school today?
Dad:nope son, ive got my chicken and rice to eat.
Son:hey Dad, can we go fishing?
Dad:nope son i've got meal#9 to eat then 45 minutes of cardio and then upper back and side delts
Girlfriend:wanna fucck tonight?
Bodybuilder:can't do it tonight, got legs and then my third GH injection of the day plus i've gotta save my semen for my gay for pay appointment.
-
That's way cool. I think I'm getting a little choked up! Must have made you feel good.
it made me feel incredible.............. .also the way she feels about Laura/the way she talks about her
it's like it's her own daughter,(i thought my mom was going to kill the judges when Laura wasn't getting the callouts we thought she should have)
I feel bad for Dave .....................his/your sister doesn't understand that "this life" (bodybuilding )is every bit as important to Dave as her life is............
it's as meaningful and fufilling as her life is!
-
it's as meaningful and fufilling as her life is!
I think my sis sees that now.

I'll agree with that, but bodybuilding is much simpler than owning a real estate empire or even just attending college. How much more do you need to do to get big than to bust your ass in the gym for an hour 4-5 days a week and carry a lunchbox around to get in your 5-7 meals? Inbetween meals and workouts there is time to enjoy life rather than write down in your training diary what your next workout will be and calculating how many calories was in your last 4 meals. Although he's being funny, I agree with squadfather. I know people who don't allow themselves to enjoy life just to keep trying to get bigger and bigger. We should all appreciate ourselves for having transformed our bodies and enjoy all the little ways being big influences our lives.
And no offense to Dave, but although he's a great bodybuilder he'll most likely never make it to the Olympia stage. Now I don't know what his career is, but I'd bet on my previous statement. What are his goals in competitive bodybuilding?
BTW I'm really enjoying the video RTB. I think it's entirely unique to the typical follow the pro bb to the gym and watch him work out and back home where he eats inhuman amounts of food. THAT'S excelling!
-

Agreed. You may not understand what your family member is doing, but if it is important to them...you should support them and not try to change them or their thoughts of fullfilment with what you think they should be. Dave's sister made a choice to start a family and that is important to her. How would she like it if he kept telling her starting a family was the worst thing she could do, or that he finds "her lifestyle" rediculous.
There are far worse things to do (or lifestyles to have) than bodybuilding. To each his own. She needs to step up and support him like a sister should.
My sister doesn't understand why I do this, but she supports me and encourages me. My father thinks I rock! :D He's very impressed with the changes I have made and is very proud of me. I wish my mom was still here to see it too. She would have been very proud of me.

Any serious BBs want to disagree with him?
Figgs, I've seen how it's done. If you want to win at the National Level (Dave knows he no Olympia contender) you have to take your body to a highly unnatural state that it doesn't want to be. That takes a rigid, precise regimin that leaves time for little else...if you want to win. That's why I am fascinated by this sport enough to make two documentaries about it...because I don't understand it either!! They give up so much for it.

Too much typing for me!!
(to be the best at something requires EXTREME sacrifice and discipline)

Figgs, you pretty much said it in your own post. You either want it, or you don't. An average gym goer isn't going to just live a normal life and then walk on stage and place (not at a national level, that's for sure). Living the life Dave lives started out as a dream, then desired, then a choice, and then an ultimate goal. It's more than just a lunchbox and work out. It's hard work and dedication and love for what you're doing and where you're going.
-

Not much! That's only a slight exaggeration.

Just kidding SF :-*

If you never feel that way about anything in your life figgs I feel bad for you. There's nothing more exhilerating than an all consuming passion for a worthy goal.

I honestly never competed and never knew anyone who competed. I learned about contest prep from reading about it and watching videos and one thing I noticed is that most competitors maintain jobs and things while going through contest prep. It’s kinda like having two jobs, yeah, but it’s not like being in an office for 9 hours a day. It’s a completely different kind of job. And I’m fascinated about it too which is why I keep up with the sport.
Now I’m going to make a statement that may offend people but I believe it. Bodybuilding doesn’t require above semi-retarded intelligence. All it takes is to learn simple things about your body such as which workout routines work best for you and formulating diet plans but it doesn’t require a great deal of deep thought. Aside from that, which I consider the most intellectually challenging aspect, all you need is the willpower to train intensely and maintain a strict diet. That’s too easy and I can’t believe so many people have trouble with that part alone.
-
Since when do you have to give up having a life to be a pro bb? Ronnie Coleman was a full time cop and a father of two, Dexter Jackson had a wife and 3 kids, Troy Alves was in the Airforce, Daid Henry works over 40 hrs a week managing an army warehouse, Garrett Downign was a marine who served in the gulf War . . .
I'd hate to suggest that to devote one's every waking moment to being an amateur bb with little hope of being on the Mr. Olympia stage is somehow selfish and lazy. Instead, I suggest that they must be nearsighted and lack imagination. Hell, I'm in the army starting my predeployement work to go overseas and I still get all of my workouts and meals in.
You can follow your bb dream and still do something with your life

your mom should be very proud cause your displaying the monster genetics that she gave you.

I understand the passionate part but what I don't get is what he's doing when his family is getting together. On a day when you're scheduled to do something like spending time with your family how about scheduling your workout around the event, or having healthy foods available at the cookout? I'd rather go to a cookout with a shoulder/arm pump after a good, hard workout and bring some of my best healthy bb food for my family.
Well put Laura.
If you never feel that way about anything in your life figgs I feel bad for you. There's nothing more exhilerating than an all consuming passion for a worthy goal.
Don't feel bad for me. I'm passionate about life, about starting my first year in college in just over a month, my pursuit to become a personal trainer and the best trainer I could possibly be, and to eventually become a surgeon. And 4 days a week I'll always go to the gym to have the best workouts possible, and continue to physically exceed myself!
I think you did a damn good job on the documentary and I think it's end result was a total success. Congrats!

hi, fellow getbiggers! its dave pulcinella. i have to say, i am GUILTY AS CHARGED!!! guilty of being absent at some ( not all ) family gatherings. guilty of not being as available as i could be at these "milestones" my sister speaks of. guilty of being regimented, even robotic in my daily routine. guilty , guilty , guilty!!
but i am also "guilty" of having won 2 overall state titles, 2 overall regional titles, a top 5 placing in a pro qualifier and 2 national class wins.......all in the past 3 years. i know, i know...who cares, right? in the grand scheme of things, this little microcosm called competitive bodybuilding doesnt mean much to the outside world at all. im not blind to that. i also have no delusions of competing on the olympia stage. my genetics are average. i accepted that a long time ago.....BUT!! it means alot to ME!! my shows are MY "milestones". its what i do. its what ive wanted to do since the age of 12 when i saw arnold and franco and ferrigno in the magazines. these guys were gods to me. to do as well as i have in the sport ive loved since before puberty, means the world to me. if i can top off my competitive career with earning an ifbb pro card, i will feel as though theres NOTHING in this world i cant do. ( corny, i know..but true)
i also think its worth mentioning that i am only absent from family gatherings for the 16 weeks leading up to a show. the rest of the year, i am very available. im sure my sis would agree with that.
as far as doing bb'ing to the exclusion of ALL ELSE, i hardly consider myself guilty of that. i do run my own business and have for the past 15 years. i support myself completely with the income i generate with this business ( no, its not g4p).. this by itelf is extremely involved.i also get numerous figure competitors and bb'ers ready for shows and travel to those shows to support them and i spend much time composing and recording original piano pieces for my brothers video projects.
anyway, i hate defending myself. im uncomfortable whenever i have to toot my own horn, but you have all made great points and i just wanted to add my "counterpoint"
thanks for indulging me......dave p.

So skip 'em Mike! No one's forcing you to read this or post here.
I don't need to explain myself to MM but I would like to add something in order to avoid being seen as someone who only uses this board to advertise my DVDs.
As I was spending the last two years making RTB2 I realized that it was going to be a bit different than most of the BB videos out there. I was intentionally exploring aspects of the sport that I hoped would spark debate and conversation about some of the deeper reasons why we humans do anything to an extreme and I looked forward to the spirited debates that I hoped would be the result of all my hard work.
Now that time is here and I am releasing small clips in order to start those conversations...just like we did here in this post today. If you're not into analyzing what you do, then move on MM. Dragonheart just started a post about Squadfather's mom that you might want to post in. But I know that there are many members here who are intelligent and enjoy discussing these topics and I hope to start a few more conversations in the coming weeks.

Epic meltdown!! ;)
Seriously Dave, be honest. Do you think that once in a while you used your contest prep excuse just to get out of something you didn't want to do? (Not our nephew's birthday. You were legitimately out of town at a contest that weekend.)

Very respectable post! Well now that clears things up a bit. I'm inspired by you in that you not only live your dream and am inches away from reaching your ultimate goal, but have applied the same rules of success that accompany bodybuilding to other aspects of your life and career.

I am willing to discuss most any topid bodybuilding that you can think of, I have been involved in the industry for 14 years. I simply find your INCESSANT advertising of your dvd annoying and when I watched it I witnessed some of the worst form I have ever seen. That said let's keep in mind KIDS read this board and will inevitable watch your movie which in fact annoys me a great deal as they, not knowing any better, will see you all big and on a TON of sauce and think by training like an idiot like you do they will get huge. This is irresponsible and pisses me off. You may get your pro card but you will NEVER make it as a pro nor will you ever get rich off bodybuilding so why keep taking drugs and putting your health at risk? It's a sickening obsession great job on the dvd clap clap clap keep up the fantastic work man you're my hero.

Easy there Mike. Back up a bit. First of all, you are talking to the filmmaker, not the bodybuilder.
So it's the kids you are worried about? Do you also write angry posts to Hollywood filmmakers who put too much violence in their movies? Do you want to remove all examples of smoking and drinking from television?
Let's face it Mike, whether you like it or not BB is about pushing the human body to its limits using extremes of diet and hard exercise and sorry to say, CHEMISTRY. There's no two ways about it, despite the many natural BB contests out there. I am not defending it just reporting it. If you are a fan of Olympia level BB, you are a fan of chemically altered physiques. That's the reality. Yes, it's dangerous. But so is race car driving, and mountain climbing, and equestrian competitions. Just ask Christopher Reeves. Shall we stop youngsters from riding horses? Have you written to NASCAR to tell them to slow down so that kids don't speed?
Further, you might do well to teach your kids the difference between an instructional video that aims to teach and a documentary which is a reflection of what IS. RTB2 is clearly labeled a documentary. Would you criticise the maker of a documentary that shows what transsexuals have to do to change gender because it might cause a boy to lop off his penis?
Lastly, the "form" debate has been done to death here on getbig. If you don't already understand that someone who does anything for 25 years could possibly make some changes and improvements to textbook form that may look strange to YOU but work for HIM then nothing I say will convince you.
Have you actually SEEN the entire documentary that you criticise so that you can put those clips in context? I stand by my work. I will send you a copy for FREE if you PM me with you address and promise to watch it with an open mind, as a documentary, and then post your feelings here...positive or negative.

methyl mike. this is dave pulcinella, the bodybuilder in that clip. i can respect that you dont like my exercise form. i can imagine how it must look to people seeing that for the first time. im not going to defend it as im tired of doing so. but i do have a question for you: why SHOULDNT my brother come on here and present his dvd to the getbiggers? all we hear on here is how tired everyone is of the bb'ing dvd's that are out there now. how boring and unimaginitive. how the personalities of the top pros are akin to a cinder block. how buying dvd's nowadys is a waste of money.....well, my brother has produced something different than that..very different and he knows that if he can get the word out, people will embrace this breath of fresh air in a stagnant industry.
if you think hes posted too much regarding this dvd, i guess i can understand that, but ,as with any form of advertising, repetition is what gets your product in the consciousness of your target customer: the getbiggers.
best to you...dave p

I'm going to throw out an apology, what I said was really uncalled for and makes me come across like a total internet badass which I am not. I am going to see the movie and will give it an honest review, I have respect for all the hard work that obviously went into it I can only guess I am a little bitter at myself for giving BBing up. SOrry again for all the BS I posted earlier.

bodybuilding is a way of life,,the moment you stop living it you are no bodybuilder anymore,,you become a lifter,,
bodybuilding way of life doesnt mean to eat every day clean food 6 times a day,,it means to be on a constant mission to build your muscles by any means possible,,if it is by eating clean because you are 300lb obese then do whach you gotta do,,if it is by eating everything you can eat and rest because you are 120lb 5'10 and your tyroid is super hyper,, then do wach you gotta do,,
bodybuilding is about putting on muscle and then when you have enough and able to maintain enough LEAN MUSCLE MASS,,,starting to sculpt it,,some get it sooner than others,,but everyone can do it and many many do
i have seen dozens of kids starting 160lb over 20% shrimps and become 200+lb with very low single digit bodyfat because they were living the bodybuilding life style,,many of them had a lot less than marvelous genetic!
being a bodybuilder does require the use of hormones,,and it is part of the bodybuilding life style,,its like collecting stamps,,its part of the sport and a huge part of the the bodybuilder ability to recover faster and build his muscles faster,,bigger and leaner,,if you notice carefully le does not! does not disturbe majority of bodybuilders and powerlifters in their life style,,they let it flow,,again people are not stupid,,they only cut the supplier and rarely disturbe the individual even in the good ole usa,,unless the bodybuilder life style became life of recreational druggie,,then they interfer
the most important things about living this bodybuilding life style is
1 training consistantly and correctly and that includes recovery time as in rest!
2 eating according to yoru daily energy needs and current goals
3 getting a hold of legit hormones and not being afraid to take them because your buddy in the gym told you you need 5 years of natural training and you only had 3,,
4 knowing the purpose of each hormone and applying technics
5 getting on stage
lookin at your arm reflection in the car window or comparing it to another guy in a restaurant is not enough,,we are all at fault of it even pros,,but you gotta be able to go through step 1 to 5 and never quit inorder to be considered true BODY BUILDER
-
Why roids should be required for being a bodybuilder? i know all naturals look like shit on stage but they still built on their body.
-

true,,change the required to recomended
you can be a bodybuilder with out using syntethic hormones,,true,,im talking more about the higher levels of competetive bodybuilding npc as in some locals ,,regional state etc
but yes you can be a bodybuilder free of drugs,,its possible

Thanks MM, I appreciate that. I could tell that there was something else behind your rant.
I eagerly await your review. Positive or negative, I want to hear what you have to say once you've seen it.

Thanks for having my back, bro. I know it was painful for you to have me release to the world some moments from your life that you would rather forget and I appreciate your bravery.

Very True i do not consider my lifestyle a bodybulding one all i do is train 6 days a week(better than a couch potatoe)have a few protien shakes eat what my family eat and try not to take it to personel.
The only critcism i have from my family is climbing hills or steps i am out of breath,They want me doing cardio, so i am going to get out my porn collection and watch while i cycle on an exercise Bike. ;D

I dont understand why 'getting on stage' is a requirement....what if your stage is the beach, some whores bedroom, the porch of a frat house....i think getting on stage is gayer than blowing magic johnson in an elevator....
discuss
-

Roids are not required to be a BB. I think the BB lifestyle, taken in moderation, is a very healthful way to live. That's how I live. I was referring to the necessity for roid use at the higher competitve levels.
-
Does Sex count as cardio if so my girl is going to be piledrived ;D

i took care of that for you Doc, she was actually looking for bigger 'instruments' when i last checked.

all we hear on here is how tired everyone is of the bb'ing dvd's that are out there now.
this is the only dvd i am truly excited about . i will buy this one and the first one. it shows behind the scenes, your perspective on bodybuilding - the good and the bad. and shows u being urself and reaching for a dream.
bodybuilding is like a disease in my opinion - if u look objectively, its not important big deal a little muscle here, some cuts there. but when u feel it in the soul and love it.....It means everything. it makes u eat 6 times per day, spend ur hard earned and scarce cash on good food and supps, on a gym membership and makes u stop doing bad habits which effect ur results.
u think of the greats like serge nubret, mentzer, arnold, boyer and it makes u wanna get cut and lift.
In the end, do what makes u happy. AND GO FOR IT!
-
The only time my family gets tired of it is when we are downtown and I strip down to my posing trunks and start hitting mandatory poses on main street to the music of "I am too sexy for this.."
-
i took care of that for you Doc, she was actually looking for bigger 'instruments' when i last checked.
Yeah she plays around on me the relationship is not exsclusive.

Epic meltdown!! ;)
Seriously Dave, be honest. Do you think that once in a while you used your contest prep excuse just to get out of something you didn't want to do? (Not our nephew's birthday. You were legitimately out of town at a contest that weekend.)
LMAO!! YOU CANT SAY "EPIC MELTOWN" ABOUT YOURSELF!!!! can you?
to answer your question, hasnt everyone at one time or another, told a white lie to get out of doing something, yourself included?...whats your point?
-
What the video doesn't tell you is that this bodybuilder isn't missing out on his kid's lives because he is working out too much...it is because he is too busy doing "gay for pay" to pay for his steroid and GH habit. ;D

Wow, that's original. You think that up yourself?

and hes so proud of himself too, like he actually came up with something funny. whats he gonna say next..."pull my finger?"
-
yeah it's hard to believe that your family wouldn't understand the 300 dollar a week grocery bill, the 500 dollar a month supplement bill, the 1000 dollar a month drug bill, the gay for pay, the twice a day "workouts", the carrying a gallon of water everywhere you go, the 13 meals a day, not being able to pick up the baby because of back pain, not being able to throw a baseball around because of shoulder pain, etc. ::)
AHAHAHAHAAH!!!! Couldn't have said it better.

Hey Dave, Mike pull my finger!
Sorry if you took offense to my attempt to be funny. Interesting, Mike, that you'd document the destruction of your brother's (?) family life. Dave, here's hoping that you didn't miss out on your kid's lives too much while you were pursuing your "dream".

Ahhhh! Didn't understand that from the clip that was posted. Thought the woman and kid were Dave's wife and child, not his sister and nephew or some other relationship.
Don't understand the controversy then. Dave's his own person without obligations to an immediate family. If he wants to spend time bodybuilding and misses out on a few of his relatives' get-togethers, big deal. If he was spending so much time in his pursuit of bodybuilding and neglected his wife and kids, then I'd say that his pursuit is an obsession that is too strong and not worth the results.

jeez...i really need to speak up here. this is dave pulcinella. that is my SISTER in that clip and the children are my NIECE AND NEPHEW!!!
i do not miss ALL family gatherings, just some. my sister is dramatic and was PREGNANT when this was filmed and may have been overly dramatic and emotional when interviewed. the truth is that i DO miss some family gatherings because , when i get closer to a big show, id rather not have to subject myself to my family who has been watching me bodybuild for 25 years and still doesnt "get it". they offer me the shit food theyre eating and ask why i cant have dessert! they dont get it, they dont want to get it and they make me feel as though me and my goals are not even on their radar just because i havent decided to have kids. ill deal with that most of the time, but when i et cloer to the show, i just would rather not have to feel like that about myself and what i have chosen to do.
judge me if you like, but this is how i feel

I am agreeing with you Dave. If your sister, nephews and nieces, and extended family don't get it, that is their problem. You are an individual answerable to no one but yourself after you move out of your parents home.
If you were married and did have kids (which you have made clear you don't currently), then I think that a pursuit of bodybuilding at all costs, without even considering your wife and kids, is selfish. (My opinion only.)
That's why Arnold didn't marry when he was a professional bodybuilder...he had to be selfish to succeed in this sport. I really doubt that Maria would have been as accepting of Arnold's career and the hours of time he had to spend and sacrifices he had to make if she had been married to him during his Olympia years.
As has been discussed many times on this board, bodybuilding is a niche sport that most people don't understand. I wouldn't go to your extreme, myself, but I am not bodybuilding to compete as you are.
Your body, your choice.
And let me officially apologize for my 'gay for pay' joke. It was a cheap and easy shot.

no need to apologize. i dont mind the jokes. i know this is getbig. its just that the gay- for -pay thing has been done to death on here.
also, i have to agree with you about your pointing out that, if i had a wife and kids, and was compromising my role as a father and husband in persuit of bodybuilding titles, that would be tragic. such is not the case, however. i live by myself and have no dependants. im doing what i love and trying my best to balance it out with family as well. you seem to totally understand now where im coming from....
