Melissa placed 1st, and Jennifer Cowan placed 5th in the middleweight class.

Overall winner was heavyweight Tracy Beckham.

Melissa was the smallest she's ever been on stage, I think...she made MWs at 125.  She was tiny LOL...and she really did look fantastic, the best she's ever looked.  Congrats to her!!

BEAST looked great, she was lean and beautiful.  I thought she would place higher than fifth, but placing Top 5 at that show is a great accomplishment.  I had a total blast hanging out with Jenny this weekend.  Congrats!!!

Congrats also to Jodi Miller for winning a very competitive LW class!!  Jodi looked great...It's always nice to see the figure crossovers acheive success in BB.  ;D

Congrats to Tracy Beckham for the HW and Overall Win!  Tracy is a really beautiful fbb with a TINY waist.  It was very close for the overall between Tracy and Melissa.

It was a great show, although really really LONG and unbelieveably HOT at the venue.  With the exception of a break btw prejudging and finals, we were there from 8:30 AM till midnight.   :o

Congrats to all the ladies for a job well done!

 :)

I don't really know what to say about this, other than I do know that the competitors (Top 2 in each class I believe) were tested at the show.  If she passes the test, then that's that.  It's kind of a mis-conception that Team U is a "natural" show...it is a tested show, so the competitors need to pass the test.  I believe competitors are supposed to be "clean" for a year prior to the competition.
I don't know what happens with the tests or the results...I guess that's up to the NPC to determine.

  Great job!!!!!!    :D

This is why they need to hand out pro cards to the winner of each class in female bodybuilding.

It seems in most cases the overall and winner of the procard is the heavy weight.

How can Pro female bodybuilding move forward (or is it actually backwards?) if only the big mass girls get pro cards?

I like Jodi's pics where she has a smile on her face better than her "photo shoot" face.

Smile in more of your professional shots Jodi!! I think you look way sexier!!

   Just my nonprofessional opinion.   :)

I'd love to see more pro cards for fbb too...they hand out so many for figure, after all.
The only show where the FBB class winners get pro cards is NPC Nationals in November.

A LW won the overall at the Jr. USAs earlier this year, which was great to see.  And based on who I know will be at Nationals this year, we could see a LW take the overall.   8)

I haven't followed women's bb'ng as much over the past years, but am starting to  more now because I see it possibly going in a better direction.

I dunno.

Perhaps if the "figure", "fitness" and male bodybuilding divisions would cut down on their pro card give aways instead, raise the status of the pro card?

How about awarding all the class winners, especially since women have fewer classes, but only give out cards at the nationals?

I would like to see the Mr USA card removed altogether, but more cards being handed out internationally.

you mean just give out pro cards to the class winners at nationals and no other shows?

Yes.

Instead, Russia and a few other big bodybuilding countries (Germany?) could get 3 or 4 pro cards for their nationals instead of only one.

It would make bodybuilding more global, but also raise the status of winning a pro card. Back in Arnold's days, winning a pro card meant you were world class pretty much.

I don't necessarily disagree, but it seems that would make the rest of the NPC national shows somewhat pointless for the competitors who really are focused on going pro, no?  It also could decrease the overall quality of the competitors at the shows.  I suppose one way to do it would be to require top 5 placing at one of the other national shows in order to compete at Nationals.
We dont have enough pro FBBs right now either way, esp in the lower weight classes.  One way to help "change the direction" of women's bb would be to qualify more smaller-sized women for pro status.

Also I'm not sure I understand why qualification into the IFBB for competitors from other countries is linked to how many pro cards are awarded in the US through the NPC?

No need for other national NPC shows. Have qualifiers for the Nationals instead.

There is currently much fewer pro cards handed out in Russia than in USA, eg.

Meaning that it's much harder for a Russian bodybuilder to become pro.

What it means is also that the quality of those who turns pros in USA aren't as high, since it's being watered out (I'm referring to male bodybuilding and the "fitness" and "figure" now).

Actually, I think the best thing would be if there were no pro cards awarded at any national show, but that those who won their class were sent to the World Championships, instead of the Team Universe winner.

And that the top 3 or perhaps top 5 in every class in the world champs would get a pro card.

That way, only the best in the world would get the pro cards.

But that will never happen. 8)

It would be nice to see the weight class winners in the bodybuilding division earn pro cards, especially with figure's top two in each height class earning theirs.  But it will make me work that much harder for Worlds so that I can earn mine over in Spain.

The top two in each weight class did get tested directly after receiving their trophies on Saturday night.  I sincerely hope no one was dishonest in this competition and everyone was truly clean for the past twelve months:  no clen, no illegal or prescription diuretics, no steroids, no growth, no whatever else you can't find in a grocery store or a vitamin/supplement shop.  If anyone dared to grace that Team Universe stage having had any of these substances in her body within the past twelve months, then karma will come back to bite her in the butt.  It's bad enough for a woman to take any of these substances, but it's worse when she loses not just her femininity but her integrity as well.  I couldn't even begin to imagine being dishonest and shoving someone who is actually clean out of a rightful placing.  Let's hope no one did this at this show.

It was great meeting you as well, Lori!  I told you that when I saw the pictures of you as the winner of the lightweight class at Junior Nationals, I felt I actually had a chance of winning this show.  This was the most confident, calm, relaxed, and happy I have ever been going into a show.  I knew in my heart I was going to win, and I don't mean that in an arrogant or cocky manner.  I just had that much belief in myself and my preparation.  I looked in the mirror in the days prior to Team Universe, and I saw a winner.  It's the first time I've seen that since I began competing in the NPC in 2001.

And Flower...you're not the only one who asks to see my smile more than my pout.  I take it as a compliment!   :)

I agree with you, women should not take male hormones, why in the hell would they want to look like a man? I think Mindspin will ultimately rid female bodybuilders of using these hormones in their quest to look like men, and it's nice to see that you agree that the sport needs to get rid of these select few who have no desire to look feminine. You looked great by the way :)

Thank you so much, Blinky, CQ (PM me, girl when you get a chance!), and PB!  I kicked my training into high gear this week, seeing as how I'm just five weeks out from heading to Spain for the World Championships.  I feel as though a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders with this win.  For the first time, I am able to step foot into a gym and train my butt off while feeling like a champion.  I feel like I can do no wrong with my physique as long as I stay true to my values and my ideals, which is what I have done ever since I switched to bodybuilding.

Do you know that the first time I stepped on a national level stage, I was in the last call out?  Sandy Ranalli told me, "You need to eat and put some size on your body; you're too tiny."  I walked onto that 2002 Junior Nationals Figure stage with glutes more striated than the bodybuilders, and I was slapped on the wrist for it.  Do you know that I never did win a single figure show?  That all three of my wins have been in bodybuilding?  I tried desperately for years to fit the figure mold, and I finally realized last year that the only mold I would ever fit is the one I created for myself.  And so I switched back to what I truly wanted to do:  bodybuilding.

Between the prep for Team Universe and this current prep for Worlds, I have never been so relaxed and at ease with my body and my workouts.  I have a newfound trust and sense of confidence in myself.

All I can say to other girls who have dismal placings in figure or feel they are out of place in one division or another of this industry:  do what is right for your heart and your peace of mind.  At the end of the day, you are the only judge that truly matters.  I waited seven years to earn a national level win, and damn...it was worth it.  And all because, in the words of Elvis, "I did it my way."

Great post!  Yep most people listen to too many people and not the one that knows themselves the best.....you!  Looks big time like you know what you are doing and you should be confident, cause you know what you have done to get where you are.

Oh and also cause you look fantastic! Good luck in your show  :)
