Dog Dies After Being Set On Fire

NEW YORK - A pit bull who was found on fire while tied to a tree on Long Island died on Tuesday. A Long Island animal protection group announced Monday that it was offering $1,000 for information that would lead to the conviction of someone who set a pit bull on fire after tying it to a tree.
The SuffolkCountySPCA said the dog, a male, suffered burns on over 60 percent of his body. His injuries included severe burns on his face and ears, the loss of teeth and puncture wounds on his neck, the group said.
The dog, named "Maximus" by emergency veterinarians, was tied to a tree in Brentwood, N.Y. when the attack took place. Veterinarians who treated Maximus said they smelled gasoline in his fur.

"Even after what he's been through, Maximus still tries to wag his tail when he sees people enter his isolation area," said Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross on Monday before the dog succumbed to his injuries.

I wish people would get Karma thrown back on them for shit like this... Disgusts me.. And yet people say Pitbulls are the killers. Looks like we need to take a look in the mirror. That was a damn good looking dog I am sure. Hell I would've paid to have him flown to me, so this wouldn't have happened. Hands down the most exploited and abused breed on the planet. I was watching kc swat last night. The swat guys where scouting a house and there was a pit in the yard. First thing the guy says is "there is a pit". "We might have to neutralize it if it is viscous". Which is understandable since these guys come across dogs that are trained to attack police and swat.
After the bust you see the pit running around, and rolling on his back showing his belly to the police. Smiling, tail wagging a mile a minute, happy as a clam. All the police where patting him. By the end of the bust all the officers where in love with the dog. The dog was smiling, happy to be hanging out with people. Pitbulls LOVE people when they are raised correctly. Thankfully this pit was just a family pet who was not used to protect drugs. Unfortunately there is no better dog to use in a dog fight then a pitbull. However, there are better choices when it comes to protection. That job is better for breeds like American bulldogs, Mastiffs, Dobermens , German Shepard's or Rotties. Thug America has latched on to these dogs and is exploiting them to no end.
Before pits became popular there was a rot on every chain in the hood. Now there are pits. The breed is suffering because of the idiots who abuse/ fight/ exploit them. This is not just a inner city problem, This type of shit )especially fighting) goes on everywhere.
What was done to this dog is despicable.Sick twisted and cruel. People get so upset about abuse towards dogs, because dogs have no motive. They don't want anything from you. They don't care what you look like, how you dress, how much money you make, what color you are, or what position in society you hold. They are never in a bad mood. All they want to do is be your friend. People who abuse defensless dogs are no better then people who abuse kids. Yea, maybe a kid is more important because it is human, but the idea is the same. A peaceful dog is defenseless and innocent. To light one on fire while alive? Inexcusable. One can only hope that piece of trash gets what he / she deserves.

When I read things like this I really want to just give up. The world is just to horrible to want to be a part of it sometimes.

Like I've posted before, not enough predators.
Man has an inate sense to fight for survival. We have to have made it considering the weakness of our species and its relative success. Unfortunately with that fight for survival, there is also an innate sense of cruelty. In modern society there are few outlets for those innate senses. If we had more predators trying to eat us, we'd have to use those things in order to survive. We don't, so the primal behaviors come out with sick, twisted things like this. Did people burn cats in the 1800's? Im willing to be they did. The difference was I bet it was fewer of them because they were all out working to have a meal that afternoon. And those that did, you didn't hear about because it wasn't all over the news. So they weren't able to influence others to do the same sick shit.
I also think the lack of natural predators is the reason there are so many stupid people out there. You'd think the predators would be more likely to eat the stupid people first.

Flower... don't give up on Society or on people. Yes some of the things (like these two cases) are horrible, despicable and it’s easy SOMETIMES to WANT to give up. But you have to remember that there are good people. The boy that brought the kitten to the lady named Eve. The effort Eve put in and the clinic and surgeon that cared for the kitten. The hope that we have is that the good people and their deeds will always outweigh the evil.

I think I am getting closer and closer to becoming a vegetarian, and it bothers me to even kill a spider or a fly sometimes. I do not want to be the cause of any thing's suffering or death. I realize that is impractical, but when I hear things like these stories it just feels hopeless. :-\
I know people are "better" or "more important" than animals, but I don't see why some people think they can intentionally make an animals life hell because they are a lesser species. Food animals - well they are going to die anyways, SO? That doesn't mean they should be abused, they should be treated humanely BECAUSE they are going to lose their life to feed people. Why does an animals short life have to be as miserable as people can make it?
I wish I could get inside one of the people's head and know WHY? WHY did you do it? WHY?
No, scratch that, I don't want to know WHY. I would rather just know compassion. I think if I knew WHY it would kill me. :-\

Saving ONE life, stopping ONE abusive act, bringing ONE criminal to justice, educating ONE person is the being the CAUSE of improvement.

As I was reading the story, I felt the same way. :'( :'( :'( Scout could hear my sobs, came running into the room, jumped up, wrapped his front legs around my neck, licked my face and whined. This is totally out of character as he never jumps on me and RARELY makes a peep. And who says pets don't feel their person's emotions.

Well, I'm not sure if I'm one that makes a difference...but I'm not one that will turn the other direction if I first hand witness of something unmentionable like this.
I'm sure there's people that would see this & simply would tuck tail/run the opposite direction or would stand there in amazement. I'm the type that would jump in the middle of it (reacts first/ask questions later) regardless of consiquences...no fear...no regrets.

I think the majority of posters on this board are people that care and make a difference if they can.
Just by considering that their pet is a part of the family makes a difference.
Not everyone can help at a rescue, or take in strays, or donate money, but I think valuing your pets and being vocal on issues makes a difference even if it doesn't seem like it.

This is a very good post..... I've worked with humane societies, rescues, and other animal organizations for the last 15 years. There have been times when it is so discouraging, I want to throw my hands up in the air and say fuck it to every thing..... but even then I keep coming back. Why? Because of the animals. I really don't give too much of a care about the average human on the street, but the animals are a very different story---be it an endangered species I'm working with at work, a patient who's kept me up all night long, a stray kitten under the horse trailer, or my own dogs curled up on the floor next to me playing video games.
Its always about the animals......
