Per a discussion in another thread, I thought this might make a good topic for a thread.
Both cats and dogs need to get their nails trimmed, ears cleaned, coats groomed, etc. regularly or at least occasionally.
Please share any tips, tools, or ask any questions related to the grooming of your companions.

O dog hates to have his nails trimmed so I distract him with a handful of treats while wifey rolls him on his back and trims away. He hardly notices that we are trimming them :)

I had thought that Rocky's nails would stay nice and short because he likes to pull us when we walk him and his nails just drag accross the pavement...but alas...it doesn't work. :-\

The cats don't need a nail trimming....
The dogs get wasched twice a year and the ears do get a quike wipe with babycloths if they need it! The nails I "manicure" them myself... :D

What do you use on the nails, what type of clipper?
Briona is 6 years old and has never had dirty ears. They are spotless. Addie's and Tad's too are pretty clean a quick swipe is all I have ever done, but Emmett's can get gunky sometimes. He did have really bad yeasty ears after he had his knee surgery. I think a combination of the antibiotics after surgery, the stress of surgery, and the vaccinosis from being over vaccinated was the cause of that. I managed to clear his ears up without resorting to more antibiotics or other symptom suppressors but do have to keep up on them.

I'll be honest here , I'm having a hard time trying to envision a dog eating a bag of snausages while laying on his back.......

Tad needs his trimmed more than the others, maybe too because I do pick him up so I don't like getting scratched. I am still amazed that you have NEVER trimmed them! Do they make "clicking" sounds on the floors?
I have something like the furminator I got at Big lots for $3 and it works great!
I love Big Lots. They had a lot of them in Mass, but not down here in FLA :-\

How does Emu Oil work?
Emu oil works better than other natural oils for several reasons:
1. Emu oil is almost 100% triglyceride lipid. Triglycerides (a type of fatty compound) are abundant in human skin lipids, meaning that the composition of fatty acids in human skin is very similar to that of emu oil. This makes the absorption of emu oil into human skin faster and more effective.
2. It is high in oleic acid, which increases its ability to carry compounds through the skin.
3. It does not contain phospholipids, which make absorption more difficult. This absence of phospholipids makes emu oil highly penetrating and allows it to absorb through the skin more easily.
Uses of emu oil documented by U.S. Government patents
reduces inflammation caused by arthritis
prevents or reduces the severity of nosebleeds when applied to the nasal passages
prevents scarring if applied to a recent cut or burn
prevents stretch marks and aids in diminishing or completely erasing stretch marks.

Mine is shaped like a paw and has a strap you attach to you hand, you hold it in your palm. I will find out the name tonight.
What's funny is that it comes with one "blade" but you can put another one in it to make a wider grooming area. On the package it had the website you could go and order another blade for it for like $5.00. So I just went and bought another one and took the blade out of it for $3!! I'm so smart. ::)
It really wasn't wide enough with only the one blade, cept for Tad.

I use one of these when i do Roma's nails because they are so big and thick it's almost impossible to clip her nails.... :D
She lays there on the couch while i "do her nails" ...she loves the attention and it doesn't hurt a bit.... :D

How long does it take, and how often do you do it? I sometimes file Emmett's nails after trimming them to make them purty, but can't imagine filing them to shorten them.

It will take me 5 minutes depending if i want to paint her nails pink or if i want to go with a frensch manicure...that will take me a bit longer... :-\

I do it when ever i think she needs it ie when ever i hear her "walking"on my new wooden floor.
When you hear them walk it's an indication the nails need trimming...
It don't take long and i enjoy doing it( no goatboy...i only do dogs.. :-\ ) so i pet her and she give me kisses after i'm done polishing her nails... :D

They make softpaws for dogs too. For protection for floors or for protection for working dogs nails, or just to be "fashionable".
You still need to keep nails trimmed to use them.

I only use people ones ..they work great...my wife used to own a nail salon so we have lots of nails in stock... :D

which works great, but I'm not sure if it works on all types of coats.
Those work best on dogs with a two layer furcoat Princess.
When you have a dog with just one layer like Roma for instance you have to be far more careful not to hurt the dog when you groom them.

One trick i learned from a groomer while in vet school was to always start trimming a dogs toe nailes from with the hind legs. Dogs are more sensitive about their front feet, so you can get half way done before they know it.
Another trick for dogs that are really bad about nail trims, but will tolerate a bath tub is to put enough water in the tub to cover their feet. then trim the nails under the water. The water will soften the nail and the dogs for some reason will tolerate it. Just be careful to not cut the nails too short becuase the angle can be difficult.
