Is this a good TV?
Wharfdale
37 inch full HD digital LCD
1920 x 1080p
contrast:1600:1
brightness:500HDMI x 2
Cost about $1300
Yes, i would like a bigger one, but unfortunately i'm not a business tycoon. Is it good value? 1080p menas its good doesn't it?
-
Never heard of Wharfdale. Is that an English brand?
Sounds ok because of the 1080p.
-
get a Bravia, better picture quality, if not go with samsung,
the sonys are the best,

PM ieffinhatecardio. He is a wealth of knowledge in electronics.

Ok, think i've seen a better one for cheaper.
Samsung 37 inch
1366 x 768
contrast:8000:1
brightness:450
HDMI x 3
Gaming mode
DNle picture control
$1200
Davidpaul, is this better than the bravia? ALOT cheaper but MUCH better contrast.
I looked on cnet.com and they say the difference between 1080 and 720 is only noticable on TV's over 42 inches, and companies are basically trying swindle people [what a surprise ::)]
Determined to have one for the rugby world cup!

Are you going to have hi def sky?
most high def shit is 720p anyway, esp games right now, but if you want that extra bit of future proofing go wioth a 1080p
the samsung 1080p televisions are really good imo, they look very stylish. Sony has the best picture imo.
-
dont get an lcd or dlp, go plasma all the way.
37 inches is too small, get a 50" at least. do they have costco in the uk?

A 50 inch 1080p plasma, is too much, considering most likley he wont even watch hi def, and houses in the Uk are smaller than US, it will cover his whole wall most likely.
lcd is generally consdered better than plamsa on many levels.
-
i disagree, especially when it comes to black levels.
but if he could wait then the LED lcds coming out might be worth it, i havent seen them yet tho

I'll prob go with Virgin rather than Sky. V impressed with their broadband, and their Sky sports package is cheaper.
A 50 inch would be far to big for my living room. I play alot of games and think a 37 inch would be perfect - most 'experts' say its the optimum size for gaming.
Every study i've seen says LCD is better - use less energy, longer lasting, no burn in etc.

sirwilliamidol is right about black levels, but lcds are getting better in this area,
id go with a 1080p samsung, probs be around 800 pounds i think.

might wanna check how rugby is on ANY flat screen lcd OR plasma
my impression from watching football is they all suck compared to traditional tvs
movies, games etc is different story tho
37" should be fine if you sit close enough. samsung is one of the better brands, i take that any day over something unknown like Wharfdale. but there's also quality differences between different samsung models. if possible see the tv in person before you make a decision (and preferebly not just ice age or some cartoon they show that will look good on any tv, but actual tv sendings etc)

havent seen football/soccer broadcasted in hd. but on lcd/plasma it sucks compared to CRT. sidelines etc flash. grass doesnt look natural. looks good close up but not in a bigger picture.
saw champions league football on 30+ different screens in a store. all had this problem. no matter what the price :-\

Watching American football(or any sport) in HD is much better than normal broadcast, you can see people like 30 rows up in the crowd, especially on the 60inch plus TVs.

well i guess the difference is between the source being hd or not. i havent seen broadcasted with hd as a source (unless there's other differences as well with the different systems of us and european television, we're a little behind here)

Don't waste your money keeping up with the Jones's. CRT TV sets are the best picture quality wise for now at least.

I donno man, I think i disagree. I have a Sony Wega '36 HD 720i or p, and it's nothing compared to my Sharp LCD '42 1080p IMO.
