former masters O champ, he had a massive heart attack a couple years back and died.  Sad, but thats what happens when you stack bodybuilding drugs on top of a formerly poor lifestyle (drinking, eating, smoking).  Beat Vince Taylor, controversial decision, but beat him nonetheless.

seemed like a nice guy and family man, and waited years before making his bb dreams true.

what was his lifestyle like? was he overweight etc?

its sad that what is meant to be a healthy endeavour actually is the opposite for drug taking bodybuilders.

Don was a nice guy.  He owned a trucking business in Alma, AR and worked out at a Gold's Gym in Fort Smith.  I would work out there in the morning after work and seen him there all the time.  I got to talk to him a few times and he was always nice and willing to give advice.  Without a doubt, he was the biggest guy I had ever seen in person at that time.  Looked like he was wearing some kind of shoulder pads under his shirts!  He was a head turner wherever he went.

I don't believe he started bodybuilding until his late 30's or so.  I think he hit the juice pretty hard and didn't exactly have the healthiest lifestyle in the years before and it eventually caught up to him.  He was pretty successful with his trucking business.  You could always tell when he was at the gym cuz you would see a new 'Vette or Hummer parked outside.  My wife's brother-in-law worked for him and was paid pretty well.  I was shocked and saddened when he died.  It sure was an eye opener about how unhealthy a bodybuilding lifestyle can be.

"I had a daughter, Christy, that died at age 11 with an aneurysm. It was quite sudden. She got a severe headache, lost consciousness, and never regained. That was, by far, the lowest point in my life. Working out helped me, gave me a release from that, helped me mentally."

He apparently smoked crack and partied quite a bit.  I can't say for certain that the rec cocktail he used included E and speed, but if he was no stranger to crack, it wouldn't surprise me.  I was not surprised when I heard this information.  Think about it this way: the human body is not designed to fail like his did.  I don't mean to air all of Mike's dirty laundry, but at the same time he is a public figure and these are important facts that up and coming bodybuilders should know - especially when more than a few of them think they are Superman.
Crack, now that's hardcore rec use. How certain are you that this is true? Any other pros smoke crack?

Every really big muscle guy I have slept with had sleep apnea, and they didn’t have it before they started cycling; I know because I have always asked.  A couple of them even have to sleep with those apnea machines.  Coincidence?  I don’t think so.   :(

ok reality check here...
m matarazzo's dad also died of heart dissease.....so genetic predisposition....
first he blamed red meat and peanutbutter.... now he blames steroids... lol!
my grandfather smoked when i was young.... ate like crap.... he is 83 now... in perfect health... GENETICS

Don... he was a diabetic.... so not very smart abusing slin.... and hgh.... and steroids.. lol...
being a diabetic raises risks of heart disease.... kidney failure...etc etc , a long list of problems....

conclusion.. sure steroids did not help them get any healthier... but that is not what killed them....
for every bodybuilder that died... you can find 20 that are ok....also i knew about a dozen people that have had heart related problems...they did not use steroids.... GENETICS....

so really what does this tell us??
people get sick and die..... bodybuilders are no exception...

Don was a truckdriver for many, many years prior to owning his own trucking business. He was out of shape and lived the truckers lifestyle. Unless you've driven truck, you probably don't know what that entails.

He was a cross-country driver.

He started bodybuilding late. Very late. He did not "ease" into the lifestyle. He dove head-first into hardcore bodybuilding.

He was a very nice guy and easy to talk to. Instead of owning an ordinary cat, he owned a huge Bobcat. He died in his sleep, but the reports as to "why" were kept quiet. The family never released the autopsy reports.

Don and I used to talk and email all the time. I still have emails from him. Sad, but yeah, prolly the best way to go if you had to choose.

I wish I still had the pics of him posing with his Bobcat and the one of him standing on top of his Kenworth.

BB is the only endeavor in the world that can do more damage in the end than good

or it could be all the creatine he used.

What supplements do you use?
I use a lot of effervescent creatine (possible overdose?), and a whole array of vitamins and minerals, including zinc, magnesium, calcium, multivitamins, vitamin-C, vitamin-e, iron, potassium, and even mega-mineral tablets.
Could the mega's be the culprit?  ::)

A week ago a gentleman competing in the over 90kg class of my country when preparing to this year championship had kidney failure.
Off course it had nothing to do with steroids because they improve your health right? He problably was doing narcotics right?

Last week also a local bouncer who as been on and off steroids for 15 years had 2 heart attacks, still alive thow. 38 years old. Obviously steroids had nothing to do with it he was problably on blow. His bouncer partner died a year ago of... heart attack. same age, steroids everywere.

Was it the steroids? no no no no ! steroids improve health right? He was problably on narcotics!

here we go again.... FAILCO and his knowledge... ::) ::) ::) ::)
last night a friend of mine his dad past away... massive hartattack.... NO STEROIDS involved....
another friend of mine his uncle... hartattack.. again NO STEROIDS.... another friend of mine his dad... cancer... NO STEROIDS.... people get sick.... period...
another friend of mine also had a hartattack.... he used steroids yes... you know what the doc asked him???
does it run in your family?, and DO YOU SMOKE...? steroids were not even mentioned until later....
risk factors like smoking, genetics, and even stress are way way worse.... and this is coming from a doc....

about don... who said that he would have lived to see 80 years old , if he had not chosen to bodybuild....??????
maybe he would have died anyway....he was a diabetic, and lived a very unhealthy lifestyle most of his life.... but ofcourse it were the steroids that killed him  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

this discussion is always very silly.... look at the guys from the 70's..... most are still very well and healthy.... and they all ABUSED the shit out of steroids.... a lot of orals which are known to heavily compromise good cholesterol...!! SO THERE YOU HAVE YOU ANSWER.....
Hell, look at Stallone... juicing for like almost 40 years!! lol....
people get sick and die.... bodybuilders are no different....

oh and kindney failure?? he misused diuretics.... probably followed your dumbass advice FAILCO....
steroids do not damage kidney's... it's the high bp that some steroids cause that is bad for kidney's... get your water retention under control and you are fine...
i am all for knowing the risks involved with PED's but these dumbass panic campaigns do not help anybody...
Steroids do not kill.....
diuretics, narcotics, insulin = early death....

Can we go ahead and release Goatboy from time out now? I always loved reading his posts. Epic contributor. What the fuck did he do anyways? I cant even remember.

This. He was one of the best and around from the very start. Intelligent  and funny.... which makes a difference round here.

I think it was a Joe Weider thing that got him banned.

Regarding Youngblood, I'm sure he knew the risks...he wanted to be a beast at all costs. Shame the price was so high.
