Title: Hard diet question...
Post by: drkaje on August 17, 2007, 07:22:21 AM
I have a 4 hour test on wednesday and can't bring food. Can go to the bathroom but that's it. Is there a way to eat before and so on before? obviously they can't prevent me from eating a granola bar on the way to the bathroom and that would be a great idea if the local place weren't out of them. There is fresh fruit on the island but we really can't bring in stuff and it may not be possible to leave stuff in the rear of the testing area.

Keep a snickers bar or 2 in your pocket ?

maybe put 2-3 scoops whey in a small plastic bag and have in your pocket, mix it with water in your mouth if you can't bring a shaker

First of all, it's not going to take you 4 hours because you're going to know the material so well that you'll breeze right thru and ace it  ;D  BUT in the event you're sequestered the entire time, here's what I'd suggest.  Cook up some eggs the night before and maybe even add a couple of ounces of steak to them or cheese, but I'd do a little steak.  Also the night before, cook up some oatmeal.  None of that instant crap with sugar either.  Get the real thing.  Steel cut would be the best or at least thick cut rolled.  In the morning, heat it up and eat it on the way along with a banana or other piece of fruit.  About 2-1/2 hours into it, I'd go for a potty break and inhale some yogurt on the way.

Not sure what you mean by 'the island'   ???  Are you on some exotic island taking a class and there's a final on Wed or something?  In that case...nevermind.

Seriously, what are the overall food options and                                                                                                               what time is the test?

What kind of a test is this? I would just eat a little extra before the test & tough it out during the four hours. Shit sometimes at work I'm running all day & can't eat for eight hours or so.

 :o :o :o

There's NO WAY I could do that.  I would pass out.

Sometimes I damn near do. But it usually doesn't hit me until the end of the day. Then I usually have to tough it out & wait until I get home (there's no good food at my work - trust me). But then again, it comes with the job.

Four hours?  You honestly think missing that one meal is going to negatively affect your life?  Wow, you've been brainwashed...

It is the end of the world, NLOL!

Fast metabolism. After about two hours I crash, can't pay attention and get light-headed. Not diabetic, suplementing or even bulking. Just a fast metabolism.

I'll try doubling breakfast and taking banannas and some granola bars or maybe dried fruit.

True, the test shouldn't take 4 hours but I'd hate to answer the last 100 questions "C" due to being out of it.

Dude!!! I'm in Antigua, LOL!

Running over to GNC for nitro tech bars  or something cool isn't an option. Closest thing to cheap protien here is something they call 'sea moss'. I'm not certain what the heck it is but they add oats to it.

I don't think that strategy will work for you.  Your best bet will be to try and combine protein, complex carb, and dietary fat prior to the test and something like that again about 2/3's of the way to the end point.

PL,

It's a long exam. There is fruit and chicken available. I can get some sea moss from a friend. Just can't let my blood sugar drop too much during that time or it will get ugly. a few bannanas, other fruit and snacks can be gotten. Usually I have breakfast, snack and lunch around noon. Another pain in the butt is I have to advise them of my dietary issues in advance, LOL! This is the only time I envy fat people.

Yup, just as I thought.
Again, this is what will work best for the situation.

Your best bet will be to try and combine protein, complex carb, and dietary fat prior to the test and something like that again about 2/3's of the way to the end point.

avoid all bakery (bagels, breads, muffins, pastry), avoid juices.  Go for a banana (not too ripe), berries, kiwi, orange.  Make sure to eat some protein and fat ~ eggs, chicken, cheese, yogurt, etc.  nuts, peanut butter, oil, even butter. Try to get a balanced combination of all 3 macros.  That is the best way to have a steady "insulin drip" and not mentally or physically crash.  Too many carbs, esp without protein and fat will have you bouncing your forehead on the desk before the test is over.  ;)    Tell 'em your hypoglycemic  ;)

BTW~  How's the weather  :-\

unless you are diabetic or hypoglycemic there is no reason why you should have such a sharp drop in blood sugar

Good point. If you're that worried about your blood sugar dropping have some fiber before the test - it'll stabilize the blood sugar some.

I have exactly the same problem as the dr.  I don't have a fast metabolism by far, nor am I diabetic or hypoglycemic but I exhibit all of the symptoms of hypo, especially mentally.  I've checked myself many times and I'm always in the low 90s when in that state and only around 102 when feeling good.  I have a 3 hour limit or it gets real ugly  :P
