Adam Schefter of the NFL Network is reporting that Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel will sign the franchise tender — $7.79 million for one year — and not a new deal, and will return to camp the middle of next week.
Pats will have a pretty nice secondary with the addition of Samuel.

Pulled hammy to soon follow :D

Samuel has never had injuy issues. He played in 19 games last year including the playoffs ???
-
What a pussy. Can't even hold out like a man.
-
Watch the Pats franchise him again next offseason.
Did he sign an agreement that promised that the Pats won't franchise him again?

The pats secondary is always frekin banged up all season. The pats have been suffering from the injury bug the last few years. I hope it goes away this year.

Same thing with the Gmen :-[Madision has a pulled hammy and Demps has a dislocated elbow.it really sucks for Demps because he was finally fully healthy this year and was having a great camp.

I always like Willie Demps when he was a Raven. They always tried to find a replacement for him but he could never get pushed out of the lineup. He suffered a really bad knee injury during his last year with the Ravens that probably hurt his pocket when he signed with the Giants.
His website used to make him look like a fag, though. The web page used to have him making kissy faces with his shirt off. Looked like a gay website. But he changed it, thankfully.

If Randal Gay could stay on the field he would be a nice player. The injury bug killed him after his first season. What is with all these hammies? Back in the day guys didnt pull hammies like today.

He had no options, holding out wasn't going to get him anything and in fact would have lost him millions and a year of service. This is his best option, a guaranteed 7.8 million for one year and then a long term contract next year with whoever will sign him.

Dont forget the pats have the option to franchise him. I doubt they just let him walk.

I thought I remembered reading that the Pats weren't going to franchise him next year. I was under the impression they'd get some kind of compensation in the form of a draft pick if he signed somewhere else. I might be mistaken though.

I don't think the pats have officially promised to let him walk if he signs his tender. I could be wrong. But they are not breaking any rules forcing him to play. They could always franchise him again and then trade him off. I don't think Pioli and co would let him walk without getting something for him. Its not like they are being dicks you know? The beef people have should be with the union and the NFL they make the rules. pats are just doing whatever they can to stay on top. Asante's demands would be a poor bussiness descison for the pats. I cant fault them for it. Any time they have not felt a guy was worth what he wanted they let him walk. They have been dead on so far.
The compensation for him this year was two first round picks plus the contract Asante wanted to steal him from under the franchise tag. I believe the price for asante in 09 would be 2 first rounders barring a trade.

I'll tell you what I think. The exercises the guys at the skill positions do in the off-season for power and explosiveness. The athletes of today I think, are far superior in overall ability than players of yesteryear. But these plyometric exercises and this full commitment to staying in shape year-round to maintain peak level, really does increase the vulnerability of hamstring pulls. The constant stress on the muscles fibers in the back of the leg overexert quicker and the pulls happen.
Think about everytime you watch an Olympic track event. Pretty often you'll see those runners pull up lame before the finish line due to an obvious hamstring pull. Footballs players, in my mind, train almost exactly the same as track runners do for straight-ahead speed exercises. At least that's my theory.

Pretty sound if you ask me.

Samuel to report tommorow. Now intercept the ball "pay me".
August 26, 2007
Samuel will report Monday morning
Hey all --
Asante Samuel will report to Gillette Stadium tomorrow morning, ending his de-facto holdout, a source close to the cornerback confirmed tonight.
When Samuel arrives, expected to be prior to the team's 8 a.m. meeting, he will sign the one-year, $7.79 million franchise tender and prepare for his fifth NFL season.
The 26-year old left his Florida home earlier tonight to fly to the area. He has missed 31 days of training camp, though he has not amassed any fines because he was not under contract.
New England designated Samuel as its franchise player in February, after the corner had a career-high and league-best 10 interceptions last year. He added two more picks in the playoffs, both of which he returned for touchdowns. Samuel has three career postseason interception returns for touchdowns, tying an NFL record.
Samuel's representatives and Patriots' brass tried to work out a long-term deal for several months, but an agreement could not be reached before the July deadline. The two sides cannot resume talks until after the conclusion of the regular season; the option also exists for the Patriots to franchise Samuel again for the 2008 season. If that happens, he will receive an estimated $9.5 million - the average of the top five salaries at his position plus 20 percent.
It will be interesting to see when Samuel gets on the field. Though he has been working out in Florida throughout the offseason, he is probably not game-ready.
Without him during training camp, third-year corner Ellis Hobbs has slid into the number one role. After veteran Chad Scott suffered a season-ending injury on the first day of camp, Randall Gay has performed well opposite Hobbs.
While Samuel's return likely means Gay will be coming off the bench, it also gives New England good depth at the position.

The king has arrived :P
Samuel in house
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff
Cornerback Asante Samuel, who had remained away from team headquarters since training camp began July 27, arrived at Gillette Stadium this morning.
Samuel's plans to join his teammates were first reported by the Providence Journal.
Samuel, who was upset at not reaching a long-term contract agreement after being designated the team's franchise player, had previously stated he planned to hold out until the 10th week of the season. But when Samuel made those remarks, the possibility for a long-term deal still existed and he was likely trying to spark further discussions along those lines.
Once the July 16 deadline for franchise players to sign long-term deals expired, Samuel was locked into playing for a one-year deal. At that point, his representatives regrouped and altered their plan.
As the franchise player, Samuel was tendered a one-year, $7.79 million contract.
The Patriots have been running with Ellis Hobbs and Randall Gay as their starting corners, with first-round draft choice Brandon Meriweather, 12-year veteran Tory James and sixth-round draft choice Mike Richardson the top backups.
Samuel's presence will alter the mix, as Meriweather could be moved to safety. Another factor in a possible move to safety for Meriweather is if Eugene Wilson is sidelined due to an injury he appeared to sustain in Friday night's preseason game. Wilson looked like he pulled up on Keary Colbert's 48-yard touchdown catch, and while he remained in the game for the ensuing extra point, he did not return to action with the starters after that.
As for Samuel, the question now is how long it will take him to get ready for the season opener Sept. 9 against the Jets.
Coach Bill Belichick is scheduled to hold an 11:15 a.m. press conference and the media will have access to the locker room and practice after that. We'll plan on filing our next update after the press conference.

Watch the Pats franchise him again next offseason.
Did he sign an agreement that promised that the Pats won't franchise him again?
No. They just told him to screw. Then he came to his senses and showed up. I doubt they franchise him again. Depending on what he does this year, they will either give him a long term deal, or trade him when his value is high. One thing about the pats is they will do what is best for the team.
They have drafted most all there starting corners on day 2 of the draft.

More banged up Gmen :'(
David Tyree-special team ace out 4-6 weeks with a broken wrist.

Pats got some injuries to. Seymour (recovering from offseason surgery) , Warren , D Thomas and Moss wont play next week. Bill and co seem to be making sure these guys heal up so they can step in 100 percent when it matters.
-
I think he's completely changed his approach this year...way to many guys getting nicked up over the past few years. We'll see....
-
The Gmen's fullback just had knee surgery so it looks like
Rueben Droughns is being asked to play fullback instead of backing up
Brandon Jacobs.
Hahaha Jacobs outweighs Droughns by 30lbs :o
-
I think Jacobs is going to be bust this year as the full-time back. He's too tall and he will take a lot of hits because he runs too high. I don't think he'll play more than 6 games this year before he gets banged up. Can't really remember the last time a tall running back was a success in the NFL. Eddie George was 6'3" and he was the rare exception. But his career was cut a little short because of excessive wear and tear at an early age.
20 carries a game for Jacobs? I doubt it. He's more effective in a limited role such as in goal line situations. Just my .02.

Dickerson was 6'3 I think. You are right about being a tall back tho. Def not an advantage. Imagine all the people who passed on Jones Drew because he was to short.
-
I drafted Jones-Drew as a good third running back in my fantasy draft. I'd be happy as shit if he manages to score 15 touchdowns again like last year.
Fred Taylor is the starter but you better believe Jones-Drew will touch the ball A LOT. He's scary as shit in the open field. He looks like a metal fire hydrant running full speed at you. He can drop his shoulder and still level a lot of bigger guys.

Just ask Tully Banta Cain what happens when you dont wrap up that little brusier.

Here's hoping no one gets hurt tonight when the Gmen play the Pat's 8)
