You mean, have a house paid for? And don't pay property tax?
Or do you mean pay a bank on a mortage and pay the goverment tax on the land that they own?
-
The only people that don't pay property taxes are Indians. At least where I come from. They don't count cause they get free money.
Own a mortgage and have the resources to pay the debt, or own a house.
The good money pros love the real estate. Fuck. At least those with the credit to get loans. Vegas property especially.

Only ten years to go and my mortgage will be paid off. Seems like a long time but seeing as I've been living in the same place now for seven years it doesn't seem so bad. I could drop my payments if I wanted if I was a bit hard up but right now I'd rather pay over the odds while I can afford it - it'll get paid off quicker that way.

Aer you looking to buy a house?? I happen to be a mortgage broker, you can pm me if you have questions

if that were the case, he would be better off than most americans living in boring-ass suburbs w/o a beach in sight.

Depending on where you are real estate is usally a safe bet.
When I first went to school (17, WLU in Waterloo, ON) I bought a townhouse and rented 2 of the bedrooms to pay off the bank. However, I didn't realize that between the two universities and one college they were going to open up 20,000 more seats for full-time students...
By the time I sold property values had skyrocketed to about 200% in 5 years. A moderately nice 3BR townhouse that was bought for 76K ended up at around 145k at selling. I was lucky to graduate after 7 years of university with no loans, debt or anything really...
However, I'm back in Northwestern Ontario, where there's a mill shutting down everyday. Not exactly a good market if you expect to ever resell. A nice sized home in some communities that were purchased for 85-100k ten to twenty years ago can go for 10-20K if people are lucky. One home in a community I work in went for $6,000; and we're talking a nice 3-4 bedroom, 2 story home.

THis is true, though I admit I'm not entirely sure of how this works. I live by an Indian reservation (Casinos), and all the ones I know of don't really work unless they want to. Just gobs of money coming in every month--tax free. I am acquaintances with a few who aren't Indian, but have married into the family, and now get 10s of thousands of dollars every month through their marriage. I need to find me a Pocahontas. Sadly, at least around here, all the indian chicks are nasty....Disney's Pocahontas may very well be the hottest Native American I've ever seen, and that bitch ain't even real!

i'm 39 and have never had or even came close to owning or mortgaging a home! i can't even afford rent on an apt! :( yes, a home is a good investment and very wise to have, but if you are alone and with no wife and children, who the hell needs all that to take care of?! the smaller the better!

I got lucky and had a nice beach frond cottage willed to me and my sister. She doesn't care about the $$$ till I sell and I ain't about to move out of beach front property. The almost 4k in taxes, maintenance and insurance is enough. I don't know how people can afford a mortgage with all the extras ??? unless you have lots of cake. I've seen many people I know loose houses to the hammer.

31, single. own one house, about to buy another (because I'm getting transferred and have to move - and the market at present doesn't make it worth it trying to sell the one I already have).
After having one owner decide he wanted to sell instead of renew my lease, and putting up with capricious property managers on move out inspections ("there's too much dust on your blinds, we're bringing in professional cleaners and taking half your deposit") I decided I'd never rent again if I could possibly help it.
