Title: Are our gyms still safe?
Post by: Alex23 on September 08, 2007, 09:35:11 PM
I feel very insecure nowadays in the gyms. All these warriors wearing those "TapOut" shirts and other MMA clothing are certainly sending a signal.

I fequently see them racking 135lb loudly  after 4 forceeeeed reps and giving me a dirty look right before either shadown boxing or doing side crunches holding a 25lb plate.

I'm affraid one of these beasts is going to snap hence release the 160lb fury.

I saw a young guy with a tapout sweatshirt on the treadmill the other day.  I kept looking at him cuz he appeared to have no teeth so I figured he was legit cagefighter.  Turned out to be a black mouth piece.   ::)   What are these people thinking?

You got lucky Windsor. I made eye contact with one yesterday and he immediately frowned, walked into the cardio room, kicked and punched at the training back for a good 2mins.

That's how much they're on the edge... like killing machines motivated by the Tapout shirt..

I would not fuck around with the guy BSB.  He clearly indicated how he rolls with that sticker.

Better safe than pinned down in the butcher's parking lot.

Bodybuilding attracts insecure young men.  Now these young men are turning over to MMA dojo type gyms.  Bodybuilding is losing it's main fan base.  Look at all of the bodybuilding magazines combined compared to Men's health mag.  Men's health sells more copies that all of them put together.

I think the public is seeing pro bodybuilding for what it is.  A sport based on drug use.  Take away the drugs and you have no sport.  The fan base is running to MMA.  The other fans of true physical culture and fitness are subscribing to Men's health magazine.

Where in MMA, Olympic lifting; boxing; football, sprinting or olympic wrestling do you see any athlete with a bloated steriod, GH, anti estrogen, insulin, thyroid, amphetamine, and diuretic type physique that is bodybuilding?  Functional strong athletic physiques don't look anything like the temporary drug look.  If they did you would see a top ten competitor in the NFL making millions per season instead of hawking the latest snake oil in the bodybuilding mags.

That's my two cents why tap out gear and guys wearing Gracie type knit hats in 70 degree weather are everywhere.

Good post bro, I'm thinking the same. An entire generation tried to achieve these unreal physique... the younger one is realizing it's not worth it unless really gifted and ready to submit yourself to chemical misery.

I am sure that someone is working on a line clothes called "corporate tapout"

I am sure that these guys would spend a few bucks to wear "standard business casual" clothes with the tapout logo..so they they call feel like a badass around the office or getting drinks after work

we all make fun of the trend and I do too...but more and more young men are opting for that hobby over trying to build a body like Mr O

Only in the gyms like Premier Fitness, Extreme Fitness and Bally's. Hardcore gyms like Gold's, Player's or even Venice in Scarborough won't have any of these clowns. That shit wouldn't be tolerated in those gyms. The Premier's, Bally's are the garbage cans that collect the people that don't know how to train and wouldn't be caught dead in a hardcore gym. You see all the stupidity in these gyms that you wouldn't see in a Gold's or Powerhouse.

There are plenty of black people at my gym..

Tried another, but it had guidos, so I chose the latter.

Guidos wanna challange you to benchpess contests, want to know what type hair gel you use, but when they see that you don't, they tell you to as though you are commiting a great crime by not using hair gel.

One guido said my Oakleys were shitty compared to his Pradas, and that sporting sunglasses were out of style.

I could go on and on, but I don't wanna get worked up now..  :-\

Bodybuilding has done a piss-poor job of branding and marketing.

Look at the number of kids who think it's cool to wear a TapOut t-shirt.

Compare that to the number of kids who think it's cool to wear an (insert generic bodybuilding event name here) t-shirt.  It's not even close.

When I was a kid, it was all about the Mr. America title and you could only become Mr. America if you ate right and exercised.  If you didn't, you turned out to be a fat-ass.

if you see a guy shadow boxing at a commercial gym with tap out gear on, he might as well have a sign on his dome saying, 'i know i'm weak but i'm insecure as well so please don't hurt me.'

i don't train at a commercial gym but i've seen the stickers on cars etc and the same applies there, as Tre pointed out.

i think, with the commercialising of mma contests, fans have noticed that many of these actual fighters don't look much bigger than they do, so in a world where kids want it NOW and don't want to go through pain and suffering to get it (muscular physique) buying some tap out gear and acting like your favourite fighter is an all too tempting alternative and companies like tapout have taken full advantage of that sentiment.

i have trained with professional fighters for nearly 17 years and i can emphatically state that, unless you actually recognise a fighter, you will not know what they do for a living if they are even at a commercial gym in the first place. the guys that go to commercial gyms either go there strictly to do circuit training (no fight drills) with weights or are with a personal trainer working on strength training. either way, they will be in and out quicker than anyone there because they simply don't have the time, energy or desire to fuck around with intimidating rec bbers.

i will say this as a message to any would be 'tap out' fighters. even if you could back up your fantasy, most girls don't go for fighters anyway (unless you make a lot of mullah, in which case it don't matter if you're a fighter or a drug dealer, money is an aphrodisiac), guys just think you're an insecure tool if you try to show your wares and i haven't seen a fighter yet that can take on a bullet. ;)
