Didn't make the best of his genetics? He's a multiple ASC winner not to mention a top 2 bbdr of his time.

Still... He could have been much more better...
It is common knowledge that he trained very lazy way - almost as lazy as Dillet! Dillet still probably was more genetically gifted?
But both men could've easily won MrO if only they had that blue collar work ethic like for example Ronnie Colemans.

He couldn't hit his peaks because days before the show, the ninjas would show up and he'd have to skip out on training and go into hiding.

Oh I disagree I think Flex made the best of his genetics but his problem was consistency , he shows flashes of pure brilliance 1993 he was OUT STANDING his physique from that year has yet to be equaled by anyone including Flex himself all down hill after that , he got distracted by fame & ' wealth ' and he couldn't maintain his edge regularly , 1993 he came in like a lion and after the accident he was all over the place he sometimes got on track only to be derailed again , but all and all he was among the best bodybuilders in recent memory

Flex has always had some good separation, but there is a difference between being cut and being dry.  Even in the 93 pics you can see that he was still holding a bit of water.  Had he come in a little drier, he could have won the O.  It is he who is closest to death that is going to win.

I think this is when he ( along with Irontek ? I think this was the Company that he was signed with ) made his " Natural " comeback ...  ::)

To comment on this Thread, I don't think ANYONE can EVER reach their full Genetic potential, primarily because they're are so many factors that go into it ! You can, however, certainly come close. Can you imagine what Dillet would have looked like had he trained like Dorian and/or Ronnie ? He'd BLOW AWAY Haney's Record ! Absolutely crush it ! Now on to Flex Wheeler ... it would be very easy for Flex to respond to that type of criticism. He could just say the following, " I don't think anyone can ever reach their full Genetic potential. I don't even think that it's relevant to even talk about it at this point in my Life because I have quite a few Pro Wins under my belt and I'm one of the most recognized Bodybuilders of all time. My Career and those who've I inspired should speak for itself. I had my Day and had fun doing it. Yes, I would have liked to Won the Mr. Olympia ... who wouldn't of ? "

So you see, I don't think it matter whether or not he reached his full potential ... the fact that he has so many Pro Wins under his belt should speak for itself. Now if he was someone nameless Bodybuilder who could have done something with himself but chose not to then and ONLY then would I bring up this question ... but at las, Flex DID make something out of himself even though in the end it cost him.  :-\

Should have been easy for him though, he claimed to have the mutated Myostatin gene....I guess the Ninjas stole it.  He's got an excuse for everything, had he trained harder he wouldn't have had to make excuses.

Yes for sure, not enough to win the O, but still pleasing to the eye.  He's never been happy with his placing unless of course he won.  One of the best physiques and most genetically gifted of all time at the same time one on the least inspired trainers too.

Could have been Mr. O if trained like Shawn Ray, instead of arguing about calf implants and sythol allegations (which he later owned up to).  He won the ASC numerous times, but in those years Dorian never competed in those shows.

A 1998 ASC Wheeler beats any year Yates.  Nearly flawless, everybody had him a shoo-in for the Olympia.  Too bad he couldn't peak again and let Coleman come in.

Trained like a wimp and relied too much on genetics.  He accomplished a feat I never will but he could have had the all-time Mr. O record if he didn't train like a rehab patient.

They did, and Cormier was known as one of the strongest bodybuilders. And he has never said that Flex was weak. Although, I think Flex trained like a monster while he was a amatuer, when he turned pro he only competed around 216-235. So, he was never really big, but his strength did match his weight. Plus, who wouldn't want his arms?

Beside back training, that is pretty accurate for Cormier EARLY ON.  Flex trained like a wimp and relied on steroid response for size that could have been much more.  Shit, if the guy did heavy bent rows and deadlifts he could have had an amazing back.  His arms were great to start but then synthol became his friends and he looked stupid.  He lost so much detail in the upper body not to mention having a chest out of proportion to them.

genetics. Even his 'buddies' like Dorian Yates said this when asked who of his generation had the best genetics. I wonder how Flex responds to this as every Tom Dick and Harry says that he is amazing but he never made the best of his potential...

Dude, he won multiple top-tier shows - Ironman, Night of Champions, Arnold x 2......Your definition of making the best of one's potential must be winning the olympia......fair crack of the whip mate!.....but so be it.....HOWEVER, in my eyes, his 1993 Arnold shape was amazing.....a beautiful & powerful package.....and in that regard he reached his potential....he became the best he could.....actually, he was that good that it moved Arnold to say it was the best physique he's ever seen on stage (recalling from memory).....unfortunately at the 1993 Olympia, he came up against Dorian who had that something extra.....sh*t, what can you do....some one is always better......

Another thing, you're forgetting the car accident that nearly killed him....that put him out of action and screwed him up good....put him behind the eight ball big time....then the dumb shcmuck tried to play the catch up game with synthol.....that is my opinion was the end of Flex....he lost the natural sweep, the beauty, the wonderful lines.....so its not like he didnt become the best of the best because of laziness or lack of drive, or whatever......he got thrown a curve ball by life (a big one at that) and the shcmuck missed badly....

anyway, its all hingsight now isnt it....

I've noticed that too. It's weird that with a sick rear double-bi, those two other poses didn't really have that 'wow' factor.

I do agree that if Flex did bent over rows, he might have been thicker, but wider as well. At the 1993 Olympia when he did his Front lat spread, it wasn't amazing. But he was 218 at that show, at 5'10---he ain't gonna be that wide at all. But nobody not even Dorian could match the sick detail that he had in the back double bi, especially at the 1993 Arnold. I go as far to say if Dorian entered the 1993 Arnold in the shape he was in at the 1993 Olympia, he would have lost to Flex. Flex was on point that night. He was great at the O, but not as good as the Arnold. I think that Flex car crash was the beginning of the end for Flex. You know the saying that the star that burns brightest, burns out the quickest, and that is what happen to Flex. He had a start no other Bodybuilder had or probably will have. multiple wins and retired. Flex is the new "Myth". Because people will be talking about this same topic 20-30 years from now. And the truce thread will be 5 billion pages long ;D

He started out great, there we agree, but he could have done so much more.  He openly admitted that he hated training and only did it as a means to an end.  Compare that to a Yates or Coleman who loved to train and you have a second-best BBer who makes excuses for his losses.  The guy had the frame and steroid response to be Mr. O for a long time.  A weak mind and synthol spelled the end for him.

You know what is odd, he got flack from Shawn Ray for saying that when he retired, he would stop training. As you said he said that training was a means to an end, and that he didn't have a problem taking food (money) from another man's mouth. When Shawn retired, he stopped training and got chunky, when Flex retired, he kept training...That is so ironic. The one that doesn't like training kept training, but the one that was the Terminator in terms of training, quit.

As a side note, LL Cool J says he hates training as well, and can't stand when it is time to work out, now look at him

I never recalled Shawn saying he would train brutally hard and diet after he retired but Flex said it while competing.  Flex never won an O because he never fulfilled his potential, Shawn got overlooked because he didn't play the mass game and, frankly, because he was short.  That's the difference.

It was in a Flex Mag interview of Shawn, which was after the Flex Wheeler statement. Shawn criticized Flex for saying he was going to stop training after he retired. Shawn said it was part of the sport and the whole "how dare you" mentality. One should continue to train as Shawn saw it. Yet it was Shawn that quite, right away. Yes he's trying to get in shape, but Flex has always been active...I guess he needed the money, so that is why Flex was still working out

the diuretics killed Kenny, you bastards.

The guy lived and trained irresponsibly and never thought about building on his genetics over a long period of time instead he took shitloads of everything and burnt out, trying to get rich, instead of one day being the best. the diuretics killed Kenny, you bastards.

The guy lived and trained irresponsibly and never thought about building on his genetics over a long period of time instead he took shitloads of everything and burnt out, trying to get rich, instead of one day being the best. The guy is a complete cockhead and the only thing he has going for him is Mad and her family, very few have ever known him and like him and nothings changed.

That and a neck broken in two places. I think he tried too hard by putting too much emphasis on making a quick comeback and abused what you said. I think Flex should have taken two years off to heal and grow. But I don't think he could have afforded to because Weider docked his  contract by at least a 3rd. So he had to "grind".
