Merlot. Why? It doesn't have sugar.
What kind? Australian
Year? Doesn't matter to me.
-
Which and why?
Both, because they are yummy.
What brand, year? :-X
2004 Duckhorn Merlot
Any year:
Smith-Madrone Cabernet :)
Franciscan Merlot
Rutherford Hill Merlot
St. Francis - either Cabernet or Merlot
Jordan Cabernet --good, but not worth the money IMO
Geyser Peak Cabernet
Murphy-Goode Cabernet :)
Something else to try:
Estancia Meritage :)

I don't think I've ever heard of that.
If it's really in a "jug" I don't know if I'd endorse it!
But like I said, I haven't heard of it.
Have you tasted it yet?

Mind you as a wine lover, I can pretty well enjoy any good wine.

Bay, is that one in Sonoma not too far from the Square? Forgot the name!
-
Napa Valley?

I forgot the name of that particular winery (after a few drinks you forget the names) but I know it was in the Sonoma Valley north of Glen Ellen off route 12 on the right. It might be Kunde Estate, Kenwood Vineyards, Chateau St. Jean, or Landmark. I do remember that the facility has an area for hosting wedding receptions. One was going on during our visit.
It really is beautiful up there... reminded me of Falcon Crest.
If you ever come out here and want a local’s tour of the wine country or SF drop me an email. Note: this offer is only valid for the women of getbig. :-*

Bay, does "Ledson" sound familiar for the winery in your pic? There is a small bar (serves drinks and a few appetizers) on the Sonoma Plaza that has a few rooms upstairs (Ledson Hotel). They had Ledson wines and told us about the winery but we didn't end up going there. That looks like a pic on the label of their wines.
We did do a tasting in the bar and the wines were delicious though!

Sure, now you tell us when we were there in July!!!
-
This winery looked cool, but the wines were gross! It was actually pretty new and from what it seemed the building itself was kind of a gimmick to get people to go there. We saw it from a road we were jogging on one day and later when we left our hotel to go to another we stopped in.
-
This pic from BR Cohn winery (the manager for the Doobie bros we were told) had some decent wines but we bought some Doobie Red (not that tasty) for the label to give as gifts. Winery was kind of cool w/the gold/plat records etc. They also had an olive oil tasting building.

If I had to guess, I’d say it was the Kenwood Vineyards, but I really can’t remember. When I was there the facility had three tasting venues: three indoors and one in the back, outside. Upstairs was off limits. I suppose I should have taken more photos, but I was too busy imbibing.
Sure, now you tell us when we were there in July!!!
Sorry. :-[
But come back! There is so much to see and do here you can't possibly have done it all. Sonoma? Napa? Mendocino? Drake's Bay? Moneterry? Carmel? Santa Cruz? Mt. Tamalpais? Mt. Diablo? Saulsalito? Golden Gate Park? Bodega Bay? (my favorite... remember, The Birds was filmed up there) :)

No tour of the wine country is complete without a souvenir. Oh sure, everyone leaves with one or more bottles of wine, but you shouldn’t leave without one of these charming picnic baskets for wine, cheese, and crackers.
http://www.thewinebag.com/picnicatascot.html
They are perfect for those romantic getaways for two or four people. I suppose it’s more of a gal/gay guy type of purchase, but I admit, I love ours (pic). They also make great gifts! :D
-
I went to a wine, olive and cheese festival recently.
You pay to get in, buy a wine glass and then all the tasting by all the stalls is for free.
Even though I only got a few drops per stall I still managed to get bombed ;D
The home made beer was well worth it, very yeasty but went down so smooth.
Wine tasting is bunk after sample 10 you have last all judgment any way ;)
Oh and no matter how pissed I was the organic wines tasted like crap!

I love their 2005 Cabernet in fact i bought a case online from the Winery not realizing they sell it at Trader Joes for $15.99...very smooth and yummy!!! Also, anyone heard of Poppy Pinot Noir? Also smooth.

Most people who go wine tasting do it incorrectly. Technically, you’re not supposed to swallow the wine; you are supposed to swish it around in your mouth to get the taste of it, and spit it out. Then rinse with water. Wineries provide a bin at the counter for you to expectorate in. Of course, few people do it this way... often getting bombed is part fo the fun.
If you are hard-core and really want to enjoy your visit to wine country go during the week. On the weekends all the wineries are mobbed with tourists, but that can be part of the fun too... meeting new people, running into each other and different wineries, going out to dinner with new friends, etc.
I assume everyone reading this thread has seen Sideways.

Bay I know your meant to spit it out, but I enjoy the buzz ;)
The trouble is when people realise that your are only trying to get pissed they give you the smallest amount possible.
So when ever I went to a new stall I made a great show of rinsing my glass and telling the stall handlers only a few drops please, them they give you half a glass which I knock back in half a second and sort of taste it ;D

We will! 3 years ago we started in San Fran and then went to Sonoma and Napa areas. This year we just went to Sonoma and Napa areas (Calistoga, Rutherford etc). We actually didn't go to many wineries either time though.
Also, anyone heard of Poppy Pinot Noir? Also smooth.

Hadn't heard of that...thanks for the recommendations Lisa :)
If I had to guess, I’d say it was the Kenwood Vineyards,
No, not Kenwood, I've been there and it's more of a nice barn-type building.

Casillero del Diablo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chile, Any year
Don Melchor, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chile, Any year
First one is not expensive (like us$10 @ supermarket) and it's really a great wine, i dont know why is it so cheap when it could be easily sold at us$50, it's great while you are doing a real bbq
Second one is really really great, expensive though (us$100+) but oh damn, its one of those wines you will never forget. I think this one can be found in USA and EUROPE.
We have many in Chile, i'll recommend me you some more if you want, when i return to my country :)

Anybody interested in learning more about Merlots or Cabernets, or any of the different varieties of wines and spirits can get an interactive Product knowledge CD / DVD from the LCBO (http://www.lcbo.com/entry.html) (Liquor Control Board of Ontario).
It's really quite informative, covering beers, wines, spirits, champagne... everything from A-Z.
It started off as an industrial tool to train and educate the LCBO employees, but it turned out so well,
they decided to market it in the stores... and the girl who does the voice-overs on it is a real sweety ;D
If you're in Ontario, and don't see the 3 part CD series in your local LCBO, ask for it by name.
Cheers,
