Title: My Creed...
Post by: Deicide on September 25, 2007, 03:15:43 AM
My view is that atheistic existentialism is the high road where ultimately morality is an aesthetic about the world we choose to live in given existential abandonment and radical free will. There is no inherited and meaningful context and self-deception about such is the low road. The most profound thing is to be good simply because one chooses to do so - not for any received truth or dictate. Fuck primative religion. This is the new religion. We are insignificant in a universe of collapsing stars and time parameters that we can't even comprehend, but to look that squarely in the face and transcend ourselves by the way we apply our freedom is to become an adult species - and if it all passes and nobody ever knew we did it then more is the profundity.

There are no huge words thrown in there and it is a reflection of and a reaction to the universe we live in and how man can 'exist' within it given his insignificance.

Read a book.

All of it.  If you want specifics:

"atheistic existentialism"

"ultimately morality"

"an aesthetic about the world we choose to live in"

"existential abandonment"

"radical free will"

"inherited and meaningful context"

"self-deception"

"to look that squarely in the face and transcend ourselves by the way we apply our freedom is to become an adult species"

"profundity"

Are you thinking out loud or something?

All of it.  If you want specifics:

"atheistic existentialism"= existence (this existence) in the universe alone without external support

"ultimately morality"= see below

"an aesthetic about the world we choose to live in"= lacking a genuine context, we must create one that works for us

"existential abandonment"=see first definition

"radical free will"= the consequence of existential abandonment

"inherited and meaningful context"=existence lacks inherited and meaningful context, lacks purpose

"self-deception"= wish thinking, pretending to know things one manifestly does not know; wanting to believe something and concluding, based on your desire that it must be true

"to look that squarely in the face and transcend ourselves by the way we apply our freedom is to become an adult species"= to realise and recognise our insignificance and come to terms with that by honest means; to make the best use of our freedom given lack of inherited purpose and context

"profundity"= depth, greatness

Are you thinking out loud or something?= I did and then I wrote it down

So...all with definitions now.

I must admit, I had to read it twice to understand what you wrote but I agree with you.

He's basically saying that in a universe devoid of any real meaning/truth or purpose, the human makes a purpose for himself, thereby creating self-worth. Ofcourse the purpose is an ill-defined one which the individual (or humans as a group I suppose) decides for himself(this is where 'ultimate' freedom comes in).

I dont agree with any of it  :P

haha thanks for the kind words man, but then again u fail to say anything I agree with  ;D  ;)

I hope you can sense the tone of my posts, none of the "philosophy is bullshit" stuff is directed towards you, and it is said humorously. I msut say that I enjoyed reading your feelings about the matter in the first post- it was articulate and also passionate, but you didn't let yourself get carried away with emotion. Pretty refreshing to see that combination.

where are you from?

Grew up in NYC, moved to Europe, Austria, France, Germany and now S.Korea (bleh :-\), though I am only here for the money so I can finance a Phd.

Started lifting when I was 25, before that I was a fat couch potato who did NO sports. Wanted to get in shape and I think I have made decent progress considering long years of inactivity and terrible genetics. Will be 30 in February...yikes!
