Yeah the US owes nothing to Greece and Greek culture ::)
Oh brother, the ignorance in here is ridiculous (from both parties) :-\

There are MANY countries with better health care greater, life expectancy, less crime, far lower infant mortality rates, higher literacy levels, less pollution. Not saying I hate America or anything, just saying that calling it the best thing going is a pretty big statement to make. America is the richest country, with vast resources and a powerful military though.
Also Greece was the cradle of modern civilisation in the West...but to be fair they haven't done much in the last couple of THOUSAND years. ;D
-

I never SAID the greek culture was not important to history... It hasn't done much for us (including you) lately though has it?

You're right... there are many countries who have individual stats which are better than the United States, but for some strange reason, even people from those countries are flocking to the US.
What I think is funny is that no one has any idea what my beliefs are regarding the rest of the world and what goes on there.
I'm proud to live in this country that is imperfect, but still has more potential than any other country on earth.
I also didn't start a thread saying "Why do Greeks think their country matters?" did I?
-

I use aspects of Greek culture daily. The way my mind works and thinks.
Tell me, what has American culture done for me?

Well, I guess that depends on where you are... I'm sure if I knew your local I could come up with something.
-
I have always considered my self as the center of the world ;) :D

England.
-
England.
Well, our fight everyone attitude did help out in the 40s as I'm sure you recall.
I also have to believe that our financial wealth contributes to your country as well... Since we currently import more than we export, I'm sure (and I don't have numbers on this mind you) that a good amount of our imports are from the UK.
Also, I would like to note that while you may not think this is relative to our culture... It is in fact the culture that the US is founded on... Money.
That is unfortunately, what the US knows, and what is it's primary motivator.
-
Greed is not a "culture".
And I say, money? How ironic as money (as in coinage) is heavily ifluenced by Greek culture.
Fight everyone attitude was embraced by England (Britain), just read the history books.
You constitution and laws are based on "English Common" law, all of which is an evolution of the Magna Carta (again in England).
So again, what has American culture done for me? Hollywood? Oprah? TV? Movies? (All would have been better answers than the one you gave).

Not really... Greed is a very integral part of the US culture.
At least I think so... The excess, the desire for more... that was embedded from the time the Bill of Rights was written... Rights to own things... Be happy... on and on.
Again, I'm quite certain if you look at the amount of money that US spends purchasing your exports, you will find it to be a big portion of your GDP.
You can say it doesn't influence your culture, but I would say it does.
As far as TV and movies.. or Oprah?
I don't find any form of pop culture or entertainment "influential"... If you do, that's fine by me though.
I find money much more influential on all cultures than TV.
Question, would you find things like Coca-Cola an influence on culture? What about baseball?
-

Bill of Rights? Research the Magna Carta...
Economy in the way you're presenting your arguement isn't culture. Sure it may effect my culture. You're going to have a very hard time with using Britain as an example because our cultures are almost interchangable.
Oh brother... another warrior who's 100% impervious to the media ::)
Maybe the media doesn't influence you ( ::)) but it sure does influence 99% of the general populace.
Baseball? LOL Britain isn't Japan, nobody plays baseball in England.
-

I wasn't talking to Britain in regards to baseball... just influence in general.
I guess I stopped caring about the media really... I stopped reading most news actually... I skim headlines, but I've decided that unless it's something I can actually effect a real change on... I toss it out pretty quickly. Most news is something that you can't directly have any impact over.
I think my point is that in the US... Economy is a culture... It may not be a good one, or even right, and it may not be a culture in other parts of the world.
But I believe in the US... it is a culture. It's your right to disagree with what I'm saying of course.
-
OK, fair enough.
I must ask, have you read much into the Magna Carta? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magna_Carta
-
Holly shit the threadstarter is even dumber than me :o
-
Look i dont hate U.S. people, they are normal people like everybody else, but your goverments are responsible for most of the bad things on this planet. Also before you talk bad about Greece and the Greek nation, first educate yourself...There are other things except money and power like being a nation with common beliefs, tradition, history, culture, you unfortunately arent a nation just a country,a mix of people from all over the world...
-

I think it's a bit of a generalisation to say people from those countries are all flocking to the US. I don't think the US is a popular choice for most Europeans, although I can't state that to be a fact. I think the US has a lot of resources and as a result a lot of potential in that sense, but a nations size and cash reserves doesn't necessarily make it great.
Fair point about the thread title though. ;D
