I notice a lot of the more serious bbers (at least in my gym and from what I've seen on DVDs and YouTube) prefer to be covered up in at least a short-sleeve tee or sweats. Is there any practical advantage to doing so or are they just covering up the acne from juicin'? I can understand if you're a well-known IFBB pro covering up so no one sees the goods before the next comp, but if you're just another schmoe from Podunk, USA...?

it's called not being insecure and not caring what others think about you while you are working out
-
It's because string tank tops look retarded.

Wouldn't being insecure mean covering up so that others don't see you and then make you self-conscious? I am just wondering if covering up is more advantageous on some practical level.
-
Makes you sweat more is all (on the practical level).
-
Nike shorts and a tee ;D
-
hahaha, i think someone's a little steamed his favorite motown musclebears aren't showing quite as much hairy thigh as usual
-
oh brother ::)
-
I think it's retarded, I always train in a tank top to ventilate, I don't like sweat, and don't feel like pulling off a sweat drenched t-shirt off after a workout, some of these idiots work out in 3 or 4 layers of clothing thinking it makes them look bigger.. you know the type, 2 oversized sweat shirts over a long sleeve shirt on top of a t-shirt on top of a tank top... looks fucking retarded.

hahah, I can see "Detroit Muscle" begging the front desk worker to turn up the thermostat, so he can stand by the water fountain and watch these studs train in string tanks and spandex shorts.
-
I don't know why other pro's cover up, however Shawn Ray said he did so to keep his joints warm- and that it forces you to focus more on the "mind-muscle connection" rather than staring in the mirror your whole workout.
-
tank tops, under armour, and extra medium tshirts TYPICALLY are for attention whores...
unless you play pro basketball (tank tops) pro football (underarmour) or 10 year old boys (medium tshirts)
-
We have this thread each year, give it a break.

hahahahhah, not only that, he's the one in the basement turning off the water main so when everybody comes outside he's there waiting with a wash basin and loofah's in each hand demanding sponge baths for all the "filthy muscle men"

haha, then he tells the manager I don't really like hosing down big, hairy muscle studs, I just really like good hygiene

BWAHAHAHA ;D

i train in a tshirt and shorts. If im doin cardio i wear running pants and a hoodie. it helps get the sweat goin and stops me from dripping on the equipment.
-
Maybe it's because they don't want people following them around asking Howdja get so big? :o
Most serious BB's do not like all of the attention that the physique brings out in public.

all kidding aside thats good to know.

That's what I figured (about the mind-muscle connection) and I know Ronnie once said that he couldn't wear tanks in Metroflex because the sweat would make his big ass lats slippery making it hard to perform certain lifts, but that probably only affects 0.00001% of bbers.

what is this cardio you speak of?

OK HERE'S an honest answer. Going to the gym in layers is a great way to warm up. Start in a sweats, gradually strip down to a tank and shorts. Good for temperature regulation
However, I think that one reason guy's cover up is that they want to wait a while between working out in a tank (1 or 2 months) in the hopes that they will see some progress between sessions.
-
My friend is huge and he covers up in a tracksuit top and pants, he does not like the attention.

its a reverse physchology thing.
to pretend like they dont want attention
but they do! ;D

Bingo. That is how I feel. My first decade of training, always tank top and short sleeves. These days I dress comfortable in a loose thick big shirt. It keeps me warm, absorbs the sweat, and for some reason, I develop much better muscle mind connection. U just focus on the weight instead of lookin at the mirror.
-

I get it you mean like shape it's black thing, 99% of white people don't understand. ;D
-
huge fuggers wear these baggy clothes because it gets less stares from the gym. sometimes you dont want people staring at you all the time wearing a tanktop so you would rather wear baggy clothing.
-
I cover up. I just hate the attention. ;D
-

Agreed.
I don't even remember the last time I wore a tank top to the gym.
-
I go into the weightroom wearin a tshirt and a tank top, but the gym i work out at is so hot and i sweat so damn much that the tshirt is usually off within 15 minutes. I just cant do it, i got sweat pourin outa my face, outa my shoulders, outa everywehere!!

exactly the same here. more and more i've been training in a hooded, thick sweater and I've discovered/agree with the following benefits:
1- no flexing in the mirrors (we don't have a lot anyway though)
2- better mind muscle connection - very important
3- joints ARE warmer
4- more comfortable
I'll go through half my workout or so wearing it and then train in a tank or t-shirt. I can't give anymore reasons, it just feels better.
-
Not that i'm some beast but I don't want people staring at me while I work out, that would distract me if I feel like i'm being watched. Every newbie it seems wears the tank tops or wife beaters.

exactly ;)..sometimes atleast.
when a dude starts with steroids he goes in one of two directions he starts wearing more clothes or he starts wearing gold gym or powerhouse tank tops.
-

Bingo, if you're big you look big in just about everything. String tanks, spandex and Under Armor are for the guys that need help getting across to everyone that they actually "work out". Much like a push-up bra for women.

what's wrong with gold's gym or powerhouse tank tops exactly ??

it's all pretentious b.s.

Back hair will do it.
Also, I prefer not having much skin come into contact with any of the benches to avoid getting warts. If one guy there has a wart exposed, he can infect everyone who uses that bench. I've gotten one on the upper area of my back from it coming into contact with a squat bar.
-

its kinda like wearing a tshirt of your favorite band...while going to see that band in concert. you just dont wanna be "that guy"
-

its not about gold's gym tank tops. take a peek behind the trees.
