Steinbrenner has said he needs to win the next three or else he will be out.
-
These Mutherfukkkers need to stop choking in the first round
If Torre gets the axe he deserves it.
-
yeah . . . although I don't know why steinbrenner has to make a production out of it.
-
I wouldn't say it's all his fault. Look at A-Rod. He is ONCE AGAIN choking in the post season, he is yet to have a hit, and is 0-9.
-
Is this MMA crap?

yeah, A-Rod's Napao's cousin.
Napao ::) ROFLMAO

A-Rod is a bitch. I hope his whore wife divorces him and takes his bank.

sometimes you have to get your team ready to play . . . dude's not paid millions for nothing.
-
Yes, and A-rod is getting paid 150 mill or something and is choking. Also, the pitching sux. Whos fault is that the GM's or Tore's?

Steinbrenner has said he needs to win the next three or else he will be out.
Did he really say this? Publicly?

yup . . . "likely that he will not be back" . . . typical steinbrenner style.

I don't even know what to make of it. I guess it's Mattingly's turn?

who knows. yankee mgmt clearly sucks . . . very hierarchical . . . but it's the most high profile job in baseball and there's no lack of candidates.
-
I want to see Girardi manage if Torre goes. What he did with the marlins could really benefit the Yankees since they have so many young players.
-
playing for huizenga is a very different proposition than playing for steinbrenner . . . don't think there's any other job that can prepare you for success w the Yanks.
-
The last report I heard said that Steinbrenner was essentially a vegetable now. Has it been confirmed that George said this and not someone else?
Also, Torre has more than proven his worth, to treat him this way publicly is pathetic. If they don't want him back then don't bring him back but don't release idiotic statements to the press.
Torre is a class act who brought 4 WS Trophies not to mention the other WS' he made it to without winning. He deserves to be treated better. His record is amazing.

His Job at Stake, Torre Stays Focused
By TYLER KEPNER
The threat was real this time, the consequences dire for Joe Torre if the Yankees were to lose in the division series for the third season in a row. The principal owner, George Steinbrenner, planned to change managers with another first-round loss, and the news reverberated around Yankee Stadium before Game 3 yesterday.
“It’s certainly not something you enjoy having to put up with,” Torre said, when asked about Steinbrenner’s comments to The Record of Hackensack, N.J.
“But the fact of the matter is, it’s what goes with the territory. It’s really not a lot of difference than in the past. If I get caught up in that, I’m really going to have a tough time doing my job, and I don’t think that’s right.”
Torre’s three-year, $19.2 million contract expires Oct. 31, and while the YES broadcaster Joe Girardi has managerial experience, the strong favorite to replace Torre is his bench coach, Don Mattingly, who was recruited by Steinbrenner to join the staff four years ago.
Hiring Mattingly would probably placate the veteran free agents Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada, and there may be no one in the Yankees’ universe who is more respected within baseball. But Mattingly is also a Torre loyalist.
“It’s obviously an uncomfortable situation for me,” Mattingly said. “I don’t want to be caught in the middle of this. But Joe knows how I feel about him. He knows I would never do anything behind the scenes to back-stab anybody. It’s not my character. It’s not part of me.
“Joe knows I wouldn’t be doing that. My loyalty to him is as long as it has to be — really, forever. He’s taught me tons.”
Mattingly said he had not read Steinbrenner’s comments, but he seemed concerned by the manner in which Torre might be dismissed.
“You want to be sure, whatever happens with him, he needs to be treated with total respect,” Mattingly said. “He’s treated the organization with class, and people look at this organization as a classy organization, and Joe is a big part of that.”
Asked if he wanted to return as manager, Torre, 67, would not respond. He has previously suggested he does want to come back.
“We need to win a game,” Torre said. “If it comes time to address that stuff, then I’ll do it.”
Torre won four World Series in his first five seasons as the Yankees’ manager, and he signed three-year extensions after the 2001 World Series and in April 2004. He has guided the Yankees to the postseason every year, but they were 3-12 in their last 15 playoff games going into last night.
“It’s the players — we haven’t gotten the job done the first two games,” Johnny Damon said. “We are a veteran team. We know what we have to do. We have to go out and play well. A lot can change if we don’t win. We’re not just playing for him. We’re playing for a bunch of players in there. We need to win. That’s the bottom line.”
Starter Mike Mussina said the Yankees always play with the assumption that jobs could be lost if the team does not win the World Series. But he defended Torre’s track record and said letting him go would be unfair.
“It’s my seventh season and we’ve had seven tremendous seasons,” Mussina said. “We’ve been in the postseason every year, we’ve made it to the World Series. It’s not easy to do this year after year after year, and when he’s done it 12 times in a row, I don’t know what more you’d want, honestly.
“I’d play for the guy anytime. We’re the ones that go out on the field and have to perform. And if we don’t perform, it shouldn’t be a reflection of his ability. The reflection should be on us, not on him.
“I don’t think you could ask any more from somebody. He handles every circumstance that comes up, from injuries, from people not performing up to their abilities, to scrutiny, everything, and he’s stood tall and got us to the postseason every year. Once you get to this point, it’s a crapshoot what happens.”
Torre held a team meeting before batting practice and did not address his status. But he said he sensed that the players were in the right frame of mind, and it seemed doubtful that Steinbrenner’s timing would serve as motivation, anyway.
“I don’t know if it really makes that big of a difference,” Mattingly said. “You’d like to have the storybook thing, like, ‘We’ve got to win it for Joe,’ but I don’t think Joe wants that. I think Joe wants us to go out and play our best baseball.”

The Boss to Torre: Win or else

New York Yankees manager Joe Torre is under fire as his team looks a 0-2 hole to the Cleveland Indians.
Joe Torre's 12-year run as manager of the Yankees will likely end if his team does not rally to beat the Cleveland Indians in the AL Division Series, George Steinbrenner told The Record on Saturday night.
"His job is on the line," the Yankees' owner said in a phone interview. "I think we're paying him a lot of money. He's the highest-paid manager in baseball, so I don't think we'd take him back if we don't win this series."
Torre is in the final year of a contract worth $7 million this season. He has led his team to four World Series titles and 12 consecutive playoff appearances and was universally hailed this year for weathering a 21-29 start.
"He's been good for us over the years," Steinbrenner acknowledged.
But down 0-2 in the best-of-five series with Cleveland entering tonight's Game 3 at Yankee Stadium, and facing the prospect of a first-round postseason exit for the third consecutive year, Steinbrenner -- who nearly fired Torre after last year's Division Series loss to Detroit – is running dangerously low on patience. Earlier Saturday, at a Stadium news conference, Torre had said, "We certainly need to find out what we're made of. ..."
"I think that's a good statement," Steinbrenner said. "They'd better show what they're made of."
Once known for his blustery, omnipresent approach, the 77-year-old Steinbrenner has been an increasingly distant figure in Yankeedom, inspiring speculation about his health. He has stayed away from the Stadium and reduced most of his public comments to pre-packaged statements released through his spokesman, Howard Rubenstein.
But with his team teetering on the brink of a knockout, the old Steinbrenner came out swinging on Saturday night, putting Torre on immediate notice and ripping into umpire Bruce Froemming, the veteran crew chief from Friday night's Game 2 who declined to stop play despite an infestation of Lake Erie gnats.
"The umpire was full of [expletive]," Steinbrenner said of the retiring Froemming. "He won't umpire our games anymore."
In the wake of that Game 2 defeat, Steinbrenner said the Yankees had complained to baseball commissioner Bud Selig about the decision to play on. "[Selig] just said, 'That's in the umpires' hands,' " Steinbrenner said. "But Jesus Christ, it was terrible. It messed up the whole team, [Derek] Jeter, all of them."
If the bugs also messed up Alex Rodriguez, the superstar forever burdened by October angst, Steinbrenner said A-Rod's struggles won't temper his desire to re-sign the free agent-to-be, who will likely seek a contract worth more than $30 million per year.
"I think we'll re-sign him," Steinbrenner said of Rodriguez. "I think he's going to have a good run the rest of the [postseason]. I think he realizes New York is the place to be, the place to play. A lot of this [postseason] is laying on his shoulders, you know, but I think he's up to it."
Despite the recent organizational promotions of his son, Hal, and son-in-law, Felix Lopez, Steinbrenner made it clear he will be the one who decides how much to offer Rodriguez and whether to offer Torre anything at all.
"I have full control," Steinbrenner said. The owner maintained that rumors of his declining health were false.
"I'm doing all right," he said. "I'm fine."
Steinbrenner said the first two games in Cleveland left him disappointed, not defeated. He believes the Yankees will win three consecutive sudden-death games to advance to the American League Championship Series.
"I think we're going to be OK," he said. "I just think we've got the team. We can hit; I think our hitters got that out of their craw [Friday] night.
"We'll see how good our team is [tonight]."
In Game 3, the Yankees won't just play for their season. They'll play for their manager's job.

Maybe Cleveland has better players than New York.
-
THEY'RE UP 8-3, YOU F A GGOT .
If Torre is let go, then I will be disgruntled to the point of not shaving and wearing navy blue.. And even become a fucking full-time Mets' fan, not like that's anything to be proud of.
I am besides the tv, but not watching, but my brother is shouting the scores and what not and Joe Buck's voice is piercing me over Metallica's One.

The players are developed, experienced baseball players.
I don't see how their 'coaching' - which is what? encouragement, reminders of strategies that the players already know.. is gonna affect their play so much that it can mean a win or a loss.

The manager makes out the lineup card, he decides who plays and who doesn't.
To wit 45 year old Roger Clemens was on the mound to start the game and got knocked out of the game. The pitcher who replaced him, Phil Hughes, shut down the indians and the yanks got back in the game. He should have started the game to begin with.
