For all those fish oil users out there, how much do you actually use. I have recently uped my daily dose and am taking between 12-15 grams a day. I was reading much omegas we are "missing" in the typical american diet.
Anyone have any experience with taking higher doses? Maybe over 20 grams per day?
-
Poliquin says 30g a day , now I'm taking 15g , 15caps
-
Ya I read Poliquin's recommendations on the 30 gs per day. I was wondering if anyone had any experience taking that much.
He also recommends 40-50 gs of branch chain aminos per day. Sounds like a great idea though it starts getting expensive after a while.

I'm using 15caps of fish oil , it dont cost me a lot 24-25$ for 1000caps , so this last me for 2 months
also I'm doing Poliquin BCAA protocol , I create mix of BCAA and leucin 65/35 , Poliquin recommends his BCAA , and they are 4:1:1 but its cheaper to buy from trueprotein and its easier to take it in powder form , and I take 2lb per month of this mix , I'm taking 20g before and 20g after training also on non workout days , after workout I use WMS and BCAA leucin mix

I take about 15-20 grams a day - no problems.
-
take it with every meal , I'm taking 5x3caps

Agreed. 5 caps three times a day at a minimum (sometimes an extra five before bed).
-
I think it wont be hard to take 30 caps a day , gel caps are easy to swollow

True.

True.
I will go with 30caps when I start low carb diet
-
12-18g per day, no problems
-
really? wow. ive never taken that much fish oil before...at the most i have taken 9 grams. (3x3).
i guess more than that would be effective for bulking....by raising test levels/promoting protein synthesis/ preventing fat storage.....but i would think that if you are cutting, as little as3-5 grams daily could be an effective dose...depending on your diet/weighlifting/cardio regimen..

yes

not sure how much i take per day, i drink it straight outta the bottle. im hardcore like that
next will be SEAL oil! yeah buddy thats the new shit

For Fish Oil make sure you aren't just taking any old Fish Oil.
Make sure the product is molecularly distilled. If its not don't even touch it as it might have impurities and chemicals in it. I have read a bunch of stuff talking about how polluted our water is getting and any company that makes cheap fish oil products is not spending the money to clean up their ingredients.
Also make sure your are getting pharmaceutical grade fish oil. Many fish products say take 1-3 three times a day because really they have so little of the active ingredient in it, you need that many to equal one high quality pure pill. A good rule of thumb is to have the EPA 300 and the DHA 200. The higher those numbers the better the potency of the product.
I agree with taking a high dose of EPA and DHA, but if you buy a better product which may be more expensive per bottle, will save you over the long run because you will need to take less of them at a time and the product quality will be WAY higher.

Poliquin says 30g a day
Is Poliquin's article back in re-circulation again? ::)
30g is an absurd amount.
-
maybe Poliquin bought a fish oil company
-
30g is an absurd amount.
it does seem like over kill.

I know it is unconventional but being absurd based on what? Are people seeing any results with the typical 3 grams per day? A higher dose might be the answer thats why I'm curious if people have actually done well with this much.
I know some of Poliquin's techniques are not for everyone though I tend to learn more from guys like him than I ever would from reading a bodybuilding magazine.

30 grams really isnt that much; if its your only daily source of fat... thats only 270 daily calories of fat; and even if your dieting that is going to be less than 15% of your daily nutrients no matter how strict your being on calories...
-
christian thibaudeau also use 30g a day , Poliquin goes with more then 30g I saw he used with one of his clients 45g
-
i guess it depends on your fat intake from other sources, your daily caloric total, and what your training goals are..
someone who is 175 lbs, trying to cut up, is eating some salmon in his diet and maybe some peanut butter as well(lets say hes a hard gainer and has peanut buttter before bed in order to prevent muscle loss), and his daily caloric total is only 2200 calories.....he would probably only need like 6 grams a day. maybe less. i am not sure... but a guy who weighs 250, is trying to bulk, doesnt get much fat in his diet, and is eating 3800 calories a day..he might need up to 45 grams a day of supplementation.
it all "depends".
but i would like to know how much a guy like myself...about 195 lbs, 12-13% bf, 5'11''...trying to cut up, and using a zero carb ketosis diet, how much fat should i supplement with in order to keep my body from trying to use protein for energy? (if i get zero fat from food sources)

Would actually be better for a cutting diet as the Efa's would help you spare muscle tissue...hence the ketogenic diet/Palumbo's diet
-
I usually get around 10g but I am definetly going to increase when I start my cutting diet.
-
i would worry more about the dha and epa content. i would aim for 3 gs and 1.5g of the latter.
10grams a day is a good dose for fat lose. our diet is maxed with omega 6 so i wouldnt worry about ratios etc..
-
also, you might want to add in some GLA if your looking for antiinflammatory effect, something like borage or primrose would be great. or just flat out gla.
-
Im about 20 or so a day, but about to increase it.

whoa you might want to watch out for some real serious sides going beyond 20grams a day. who is advising you?
your looking at erectile difficulty(drugs would offset that), immunosuppression as you need pro inflammatory prostagladins and leukotrienes and potential heart arythimia and tachardyia at that dosage. dont know why you would go above 15 grams, more isnt better.
you need the inflammatory response for a multitude of things. once your get around 30 grams a day your asking for trouble.

30 grams of fat a day is asking for trouble? thats 270 calories of fat..or, something like 3 tablespoons of peanut butter. and fish oil is polyuunsaturated fat.
are you sure about what your saying?
because i think your incorrect.
side effects from fat supplementation? at 270 calories?

i didnt say 30 grams of fat i said 30 grams of fish oil which contain high levels of dha and epa. i i posted a host of studies from pubmed that contradict what your saying. im pretty sure about what im saying, that amount of dha and epa around 2.5 and 5 grams is alot and can cause alot of problems in the AA pathway.
different types of fats exhibit diffferent effects in the body. for instance some omega 6's are inflammatory like safflower and shouldnt be consumed while others like borage oil have GLA which is anti-inflammatory yet is 0mega 6. also, borage oil contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids that are unsaturated hence are not hepatoxic, but other PA'S are hepatoxic. your simpleton view of biochemistry is why your not following what im saying about the fat. your simply looking at the type and amount insted of the constituents and their physiology.

hmmmm your argument sounds valid, but i could do without the personal attacks.
im going to look into the dha epa thing..

theres no personal attacks, im just saying you have a very simple view of biochemistry. next time you could look through the research and then respond, im not being condesceding but alot of people in this section post stuff that is blatantly false and it only confuses people. this section shouldnt be about opinions imo.
i think thats why sucky etc.. come off stranges sometimes, hes working with facts and science, and others are posting opinions. its makes people with education have to work harder when others spread nonsense. im not saying thats you, you seem like your intelligent and willing to learn, but some post info that could hurt some people.
-
candidate i couldnt find the info i posted, and i dont want to look for it again, but its in a fish oil thread in the the nutrition section, a couple months ago. its has about 7 studies that are worth reading. you can also get some stuff on pubmed, if you set the limit to free full text.

SUCKMYMUSCLE
haha, strange wasnt the best word. i probably just meant that you and and others(im guilty also) often complicate things with facts etc.. which might be a little more complicated then need be. but i was saying that your suggestions are usually based on fact while others are just talking about personal or anecdotal experience which could get some people in trouble. for instance ive seen some post that echinechea(sp) is good for the immune system, which it is. but they then talk about taking it for months on end and have been without colds. this doesnt bring the light the fact that it is potentially hepatoxic and has known de conditioning effects on immune funciton so is probably dangerous. hope that made my point clear. :D
