Well then I could see why you'd need a strong neck. Shit my neck has grown 1.5 inches in the last eight year just through training back & shoulders.
-
I do neck. Helps with the jack

yes i train neck separately and i use a harness like that pictured along with other excercises
might not do so much to the width but its good for functional strength and staying out of injuries

At my gym they have a Nautilus 4-Way Neck Machine.......great machine.
I don`t train neck as often as I used to because it grew fast.......just some light stuff here and there these days.

For the front of the neck, lie on a flat bench with your head hanging off one end........place a folded towel on your forehead with a 25-45 pound plate on it...............hold the plate and towel of course with your hands...........lowerr and raise neck for the desired amount of repetitions.
-
front is easy
sides is more difficult
-
Yup...........patner applied resistance works OK,but not the greatest...............c an use a towel to apply resistance also.

I dunno man, after visiting the chiro a while back a few times, and learning about how brittle the neck really is, I'd never do any direct neck work. My neck is a hair under 20.5 in and I've never done direct neck work. I think DLs and any explosive exercise (e.g. cleans) is enough to build a solid neck...
-
never worked my neck directly out but it got big enough from other stuff (I'm naturally thick through the shoulders and neck). But, I had a blown disc in my neck I had surgically corrected about a year and a half ago, and my neck stayed thick but I've lost mobility and have arthritis and junk in it now.
Be real careful.... neck injuries are a bitch

does anyone train neck?
we had a 4 way neck machine (hammer strength) at one of the gyms I was going to a couple years ago and they took it out saying something about liability issue...
found one at the second gym I joined and found out why they took it out at my primary gym...
tweaked the living shit out of my neck and never thought about fuckin with my neck again !

Hammer strengthneck machine is horrific. Never hurt myself on it, but I never used it more than once.

i used to go to the gym that had it on monday mornings and Bill Goldberg would be in there ocasionally...the guy would have 4-5 plates on that thing and would be reppin out on that thing like a mad man...
I tweaked the shit out of my neck with maybe 2

Gotta` start out light and go with slow and controlled movements..........no herky jerky shit or you`ll pay for it later.
Having a strong neck can save your life in some instances but don`t expect or try to use 405 pounds when you train it...............lot different than most bodyparts and going heavy at all should not be done unless you have worked up to a lot of weight over time.
Higher reps and no momentum is the best way to train neck !!
-
yeah need to be careful with the neck, thats why i dont recommend bridges and the stuff wrestlers do to beginners.
someone just starting out resistance from a partner with his hands will be enough or use a towel
i do believe it's a good thing to train though, if you take a punch it's the neck, if you get whiplash in a car accident good to have a strong neck etc
cons might be you'll have harder time getting a shirt to fit ;)
-
u train neck partially with traps
otherwise there is a great exercise that worked for me which is reverse neck curl
basically just a towal on a forehead and a 5-10 kg weight...lay on the flat bench so that your head is hanging freely and curl down and back up to initial position...i think this one was in muscle&fitness few years ago...it works the two front neck muscles really well - don't need to go heavy - it works just as great with high reps

Yea they have the 4-way neck machine at the Golds in Venice Beach where I work out, it's nice, but I only use it once a month or so because my neck gets big easily.
