Title: The best canned chilli?
Post by: MidniteRambo on October 16, 2007, 03:26:21 PM
When I'm at the supermarket and I see the 10 cans for $10 special, I load up on 20 cans or so, but only if the nutritional info is reasonable.  If a whole can is in the 600 plus calorie range or too high in fat, I pass.  So the most reasonable I've found is Hormel Chilli Turkey With Beans (98% fat free):

CALS: 420
FAT:   6g
PROT: 34g
CARB: 56 g
FIBER: 12g
(* sodium tends to be high, if you care)

Any other experiences/recommendations re: store bought chilli?

Rethink your diet bro!  LOL :)

How so?  The protein and fiber is high, the fat is relatively low and the carbs are mostly attributable to the beans, which is a good slow burning carb source pre-workout.  Calories are within an acceptable one meal range (e.g. 7 meals X 400 calories = 2800 calories).  Lycopene from the tomatoes, anti-oxidents from the beans and chilli peppers.  Sounds solid to me (although when I have the time, the home-made version is far superior and even healthier).

Sodium: I agree on the sodium being high, like I said in my prior post "if you care," if you're not cutting for a competition or have high blood pressure, big deal

Protein: The turkey is a complete protein.  Beans become a complete protein source if you're also consuming grains in your diet, which I do.  Also oatmeal is listed as an ingredient.

Preservatives: none are listed in the ingredients except for "spices"

Bad fats:  Only 2g of saturated fat per can, not a diet buster in any respect.  My overall fat intake is in the 20-25% range of daily calories, with a high percentage coming from healthy fats.

I like to get the Cattle Drive Chicken Chili 6 pack from Costco.  Similar in nutrition to the Hormel but tastes way better IMO.

I used to eat the Hormel turkey chili.......i thought it had an awesome nutritional base.....yes, you can't be sure just what kind of turkey is in it, but if it were beaks and other junk, the fat content would be higher....

all in all, the stuff is great IMO......

Hormel Turkey Chili without Beans is great on top of some pasta with a little cheese. Not exactly a great bodybuilding food but a hell of a good meal.

So just what the heck is Mechanically separated turkey?

Mechanically Separated Meat (MSM)
Mechanically separated meat is a paste-like and batter-like meat product produced by forcing bones, with attached edible meat, under high pressure through a sieve or similar device to separate the bone from the edible meat tissue.

In 1982, a final rule published by FSIS on mechanically separated meat said it was safe and established a standard of identity for the food product. Some restrictions were made on how much can be used and the type of products in which it can be used. These restrictions were based on concerns for limited intake of certain components in MSM, like calcium. Due to FSIS regulations enacted in 2004 to protect consumers against Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, mechanically separated beef is considered inedible and is prohibited for use as human food. It is not permitted in hot dogs or any other processed product. Mechanically separated pork is permitted and must be labeled as "mechanically separated pork" in the ingredients statement. Hot dogs can contain no more than 20% mechanically separated pork.

Mechanically Separated Poultry (MSP)
Mechanically separated poultry is a paste-like and batter-like poultry product produced by forcing bones, with attached edible tissue, through a sieve or similar device under high pressure to separate bone from the edible tissue. Mechanically separated poultry has been used in poultry products since the late 1960's. In 1995, a final rule on mechanically separated poultry said it was safe and could be used without restrictions. However, it must be labeled as "mechanically separated chicken or turkey" in the product's ingredients statement. The final rule became effective November 4, 1996. Hot dogs can contain any amount of mechanically separated chicken or turkey.

Summary of the eRumor
An email message alerting readers to the existence of mechanically separated meats such as chicken and turkey.
The writer says it is a carcass stripped of everything except tissue, immature sex glands, and bone and asks, "Shouldn't consumers be made aware of what mechanically separated chicken is?"

The Truth
According to the U.S.Food Safety and Inspection Service of the Department of Agriculture, mechanically separated meets are the real thing and are safe.
Very simply, mechanical separation is a way of getting every last piece of meat from the bone of a chicken, turkey, or other food animal.
Bones with edible meat attached are forced under high pressure through a device that separates the bone from the meat.
It's a process that's been used since the 1960's and for a variety of popular products.
A statement from the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service says mechanically separated products are "safe, wholesome, nutritious, and useful in providing consumers with the wide variety of economical meat and poultry products."
We have not been able to find any reference to the carcass specifically having "immature sex glands."

My cupcake analogy was just to illustrate that you shouldn`t always eat what tastes good, but should eat for the best gains...............real chicken, lean ground beef, ground turkey breast, and turkey with kidney beans, tomato sauce, onions, spices, and chili powder is not expensive and is a lot better for you.

exactly Wes, you can make your own homemade chili with lean ground beef or ground turkey, pinto beans in the bag and some chili seasoning, i wouldn't eat that canned bullshit.

When I make my chili, a little bit of this and a little bit of that ends up being an enormous pot (I usually end up transferring it into one of those big canning kettles).  While it's still hot, I put it into Mason jars.  The heat sort of "seals" them (ie; you get that little "pop" when opening).  It keeps a fairly long time in the fridge and what I figure I can't eat within about 2 weeks, I freeze.  Yes - you can freeze in glass jars.  Just make sure not to fill them too high - there needs to be room for expansion.

i get what youre saying wes, but there are a lot of people on here that aren't 100% dedicated.
I guess my point is that compared to other things a person could be eating, this chili isn't so bad.
I always stick to the basics and prepare all my food, but years ago in college, when I didn't, and had very little money, canned chili was a good choice.

thanks for the info though.

ive made my own chili a few times.
lots and lots of left over barbecued tri-tip cut up into 1 inch cubes. lots of chunky lean ground beef. 1 onion chopped up. a bunch of jalapenos. tons of chili powder, cayenne pepper, and pappy's seasoning.
for me...tis was heaven, as far as chili goes. but every one has certain things they like, and certain things they dont like.

I hear ya` Coltrane.........not everyone is 100% dedicated and this isn`t all that bad,I`ve seen far worse food choices.

Train for your own goals......training may be perfect, but nutrition can always be improved in just about 100% of all people who work out.

That being said,I don`t beleive everryone should be obsessed with eating totally correct but if you are gonna` invest the time to train hard 4-6 times a week, nutrition should be a priority....one that you work on constantly to improve.

Tri-tip must be a regional thing cuz I can't get it around here.  I've had it in California.  I heard it is very lean.  What cut is it?  Could it go by another name?
