Turned down a 1 year offer for 5 mil.
Good for him

steinbrenner should have kept his mouth shut.

I don't think Steinbrenner can keep his mouth shut these days, with the drool and all.

I like Joe, but I wish they had done it last year when Pinella was available.
I don't know who they'd get now.
Still, I don't think it was the worst deal.
He's been paid 7 million over the last few years (to win championships) - twice as much as the next highest paid manager, so @ 5 million + 1 million for making the playoffs (which is pratically a given every year) + 1 milion for making the ALCS + 1 million for making the world series, your talking 6 million guaranteed, with incentives to 8 million.
He still would have been the highest paid manager in baseball, even with the base salary.
In terms of business practice, I thought it was fair. If you're a bber who has just won the Olympia or the Arnold, and a supplement company pays you based on those performances, only then to NEVER reach top 3 again, why should they give him the same money on the next go around. If a company rewards you for past performance, then you don't perform like that anymore - regardless of the reason (injury, bad luck, old age), it's not out of the ordinary for them to adjust their compensation.

You're kidding, right? Piniella is one of the biggest jokes going. He sucked as a ball player and even more as a manager.

He's won a WS, beating the mighy Oakland A's with the M&M boys,
He would have went to a few more IF he hadn't had to go thru the Yankees
every year w/Seatle
The Devil Rays... eh, you need talent to win.
He took the Cubs to the Playoffs this year with an injured pithching staff.
While a drastically different personality than Torre's, I think he could handle the NY media,
and if the Yanks do intend on keeping A-Rod, he has a very good relationship with him.
I'm not saying he's a fit for everyone, but I think he could have had success with the Yankees.

Torre was at the helm during the single biggest collapse in US sports history. Torre, letting the Sox win after having them down 3 - 0, is the absolute lowest point for any team in the history of team sports.
He'll be in the HoF, but he's a loser... a loser.

Lots of other managers have won a World Series. Your point?

Woulda, coulda, shoulda...it's all speculation.

People are throwing around Tony Larussa. He will NEVER go to the Yanks. Couldn't handle the pressure of Big George.

Two ways:
#1 I lost big money on that series.
#2 He's a loser... a smelly stinky loser.

Big George has officially passed the baton to his two sons, Hank and Hal.
Hank emulates his pop, while Hal is just a cock.
