Title: Washing Hands after coming from the Bathroom?
Post by: Parker on October 22, 2007, 01:20:49 PM
What do you think is the percentage of guys vs. women who wash their hands after coming from the bathroom? I think there is higher percentage of men who don't wash their hands...

I think I’ve posted on this topic before in another thread, but I can tell you that most men do not wash their hands when they use public toilets!   :'(

I can’t remember what brought this to my attention, but about 15 years ago, I started making a little study of this, and I have found it to be true about 75% of the time--if not more.  I have used public rest rooms in every place you can imagine from the airport, to baseball games, to the opera, to the White House and it is true in all of those places.  I'm not sure what women do.  I've never been in a woman's public toilet.

btw, I hate the custom of shaking hands when you meet someone and avoid it whenever I can.  The Japanese have the right idea.  A modest bow is a suitable (and hygienic) greeting.

I don't think the stats for women are much better than those for the men. I've seen studies that say the percentage goes up if there's someone else in the restroom with them. Personally... I always wash my hands afterward, ...and depending on what it is I'm there to do, I will wash my hands BEFORE as well. The tricky part is sometimes turning off the tap, or exitting without touching anything.

ps - I agree about the hand shaking part. That's I suppose a plus for living in Toronto in the winter. yu can shake hands with yur gloves on, ...unless it's with a Vegan. They're not too fond of the leather, ...let alone the fur trim.  :-X

pps - You oughtta check out a women's restroom sometime, ....way nicer than the men's.  :)

IMO everyone should wash their hands before(and after), ESPECIALLY men.

you're wierd !

Let’s take your average day.  You go about your business touching all sorts of incredibly filthy and germy things ~ door handles, shopping cart handles, the pump at the gas station, etc.  You go to the gym.  You handle all those germy weights; the ones everyone else has touched with their dirty hands that they’ve sneezed and coughed in and Lord knows what else.  Your workout is over.  You go to the locker room.  Next thing you know you’re wrapping your dirty, filthy, germy hand around your little pee-pee.  YUCK!  :-X
And I’m the weird one. :-\

this is a huge topic.

not sure whether you will have caught the news headlines in England recently about people dying in hospitals due to 'superbugs' called MRSA and CDif., which they blame on people not washing their hands.

Also the Novo virus which everyone else but not me gets on cruise ships.

either way, it's death by diorreaha (sp).

they nowadays have little bottles of chemical hand wash every where you look.

But, on the other hand (I'm hoping this will sound funny), I recently had a huge argument with a friend of mine who screamed at her boy child "wash your hands, that's dirty"  I'm thinking surely it's not, don't teach him to think it's dirty, it can't be, you washed it this morning.

This is my personal keyboard which you need not touch and my immune system is fine, thankyou.

kisses

I'll wash my hands before going in the kitchen, ok?  They're not actually dirty.  I'm fairly certain that my immune system is such a brilliant well-working thing simply because I use pure (no chemicals) soap only when needed...

I always after. Unless you're pissing somewhere (e.g. outdoor) where there's no sink.
But i don't care if people do it or not.

Why bother so much worrying about "bacteria". Builds your immune system  ;D.

Washing too much is a bad thing as well. Best thing is to learn to avoid to touch your eyes/nose/lips with your hands.
But like i said, why worry about the small things.

Agree...It should be before AND after.  In addition to Princess L's thoughts add:

-Touching money
-Touching your garbage cans and lids after bringing them in from the street.  The sanitation workers have been touching (w/gloves) everyone else's garbage cans..who knows what was on those.  Even when taking your garbage out from the kitchen and opening the lid of the can in the garage to deposit it warrants a hand-washing.
-Touching the toilet paper hanging down from the roll in public.  Sometimes people grasp it w/one hand and tear it off w/the other, leaving their germs on the end which if you don't tear that part off may come into contact w/your bits.
-Touching escalator/airport walkway handles
-Touching elevator buttons
etc etc...  not everyone washes their hands after defecating and you don't want any of their poop molecules on your body

That's the Euro in you talking...

There was this dude i worked with who was nastier than you could imagine. When he would come out of the men's bathroom, he looked like a fecal grenade was set off. And he smelled like it the whole day. If anybody need changed he had it, but his hands had nasty growths on it... I don't know if he washed his hands or not...but... :-X, He died  three months ago.

Women are much more cleansed then men. I see it all the time especially at the gym. Guy's peeing and just walking out. Lovely huh? Think about that one next time you pick up a set of dumbbells. I think you should scrub thoroughly after using the washroom. Guy or girl.

The saying is that Euros have more natural approach to things. Americans want everything sterilized. That is hwy we get sick when we are in other countries. We aren't used to bacteria and as soon as we eat or drink some of the local food we get sick.

I think the food/water in Europe is quite clean.

But when we go outside europe (eg Turkey, Egypt, Marocco) or even Eastern Europe we have to watch out as well. It used to be the same in Southern Europe (Spain, Italy, Greece) but that has improved a lot since the European Union made stricter rules...

But you are right about the fear of germs is less prevelant here. Maybe for a good cause because cleaning too much is actually a bad and counterproductive thing, more bad bacteria and chemicals etc... The rise in asthma and auto-immune disorders and allergies has been associated to this as well.

I rock Hibiclens, once a day.

It's what surgeons use to scrub before surgery.

Sorry your friend died Parker :(

He wasn't my friend, I would get change from him, he would come to work drunk as a skunk, couldn't talk, and yes those fecal grenades. I just wish he had gotten his life together.
