Following months of speculation, M-1 Global, LLC, a new mixed martial arts promotion owned by Sibling Sports, LLC announced on Monday that it had signed Fedor Emelianenko.
Earlier in the day, the promotion announced that MMA industry veteran Monte Cox has been tapped to head M-1 Global as its President and CEO.
In comments with MMAWeekly.com, Cox indicated that Emelianenko is the centerpiece in building the promotion to international proportions.
“We’re going to do shows in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. We’re truly going to be global,” he stated. “We’re going to have fighters from all different countries and Fedor is the perfect ambassador. He’s more famous right now in Russia and Japan than the U.S., but he could be MMA’s first true world superstar.”
Cox indicated Monday’s announcements were the initial steps for the promotion. There has been no opponent named for Emelianenko, no dates set, and no television deals in place, but all of that should be forthcoming soon now that Emelianenko is officially under contract.
“We’re looking for a television partner that we hope to get soon,” he said. “That’s going to dictate where we’re going to go and when. The goal is to open in the United States in February and we should have a date and an opponent soon.”
Josh Barnett and Mark Hunt are speculated to be high on the list of prospective opponents.
Cox indicated that M-1 Global has already stirred up quite a bit of interest from networks interested in doing a television deal including Home Box Office (HBO), which recently announced it had called off negotiations with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
“We have meetings set up with HBO, Showtime and (Mark Cuban’s) HDNet,” he said. “Everyone has made it clear that they are interested. We need to pick the partner that gives us the most exposure.”
Aside from building around Emelianenko, Cox and Maxwell Mitchell, president and CEO of Sibling Holdings, the parent company of Sibling Sports, stressed that M-1 Global’s focus is to build a truly international organization and to work in partnership with other promoters.
“We’re not going to reserve our fighters to work just for us,” said Cox. “If the UFC gets Randy back and they call and want Fedor to fight, we’ll send him to the UFC.
“Fedor and his manager believe he is the best in the world. The only way to show that is to let him fight the best in the world. We don’t just want him to be the best in our organization.
“We really want to work with all of the other organizations. People give that lip service, but we’re already in contact with other organizations … I think that is where MMA has to head. I think a lot of the organizations out there are ready to join us in that and I think you’ll see a lot of other organizations working with us.”
Maxwell backed that up saying, “In Fedor’s contract with M-1 Global, we have a clause to offer the UFC champion $1,000,000 over and above what the UFC would offer their champion to fight Fedor, and $1,000,000 to the winner of that fight over the general purse for that fight.”
Questioned about the difficulties that M-1 Global will face considering the stranglehold that the UFC has on the majority of fighters in the industry and its unwillingness to share; Maxwell took a far-reaching approach in his response.
“You’re taking a snapshot of the stranglehold the UFC has on the talent. We are thrilled that we have the ability to present to the public the No. 1 fighter in the world, because I think everybody wants to be able to offer their audience the best in the world. We have that. It’s a pretty good place to start,” he stated.
“I also think that there are a lot of UFC fighters when their contract expires, who will be looking to sign with other organizations that treat them in a different manner. They will want to sign with our organization because of the tremendous respect that they hold for Fedor as a fighter and an individual.”
That’s a lot to pin on the investment in one fighter, but Maxwell believes M-1 Global “can take the foundation of mixed martial arts that has been established by companies such as the UFC and Pride and K-1 and ProElite … and sprint into the gun lap and take mixed martial arts to a place where it is appreciated and seen as a sport throughout the world.
“We plan to change the face of this sport to where it becomes a part of the world culture.”
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
–M-1 Global plans to announce a stable of contracted fighters within the next week to ten days.
– Planning a minimum of three events in Europe, Russia, and Asia in 2008. Locations being considered include cities in Korea, Macau, Tokyo, Amsterdam, St. Petersburg, and Moscow.
– The rules that fights will take place under have yet to be determined. According to Cox, M-1 Global wants to come up with one set of rules that can be used anywhere.

Damn Amsterdam would be sweet! I'd be there for sure 8)
This is good news!

Superstars get made right here in he US of A. Not in amsterdam, or tokyo, or pokemon village. And guys fought in Pride because it was the only alternative paying out, not because they wanted to sit 22 hours on an airplane to bang a geisha. Fedor could have fought in the UFC and become a superstar. If his managers weren't so greedy, they could have tripled his earnings with endorsements here in the States. Now he's going to be like Vic Richards, competing outside the country, defeating has-beens and never was-es, all the while claiming he could beat anyone.
I hope Burnett beats him in M1's first fight and shuts everyone up.

im just happy that i might get the chance to see these guys fight without having to fly to japan ;)

im sorry, but i have to meltdown on this one...
some questions:
- are you saying pride was a 'second tier' competition????
- are you saying Fedor didnt PROVE OVER AND OVER he DESERVES the recognition he gets????
- are you saying Minotauro, Schilt, Hunt, CroCop, Randleman, and a lot of others are EASY COMPETITION??? are all has-beens and never was????
- WTF was his carrer in rings also??? a scam??? do you know WHO he beat there???
Superstars get made right here in he US of A.
man thats stupid...Superstars ARE superstars...Fedor isnt the pretty boy, or the most markeatable one, he is the best FIGHTER (heavyweight at least) in the world and maybe (depending on the next years) he can have the most impressive record of all. You are saying this because you live in USA, but the world doesnt resume to you guys...Here in Brasil Pride was always more known and respected than UFC
this is stupid as saying just because Michael Jordan retired he always played again washed up teams, or now that Tyson era is gone, Tim Sylvia could easily beat him on a boxing match if he wanted...
He got payed A LOT in Pride, and down there fighters are treated like Gods...if they deserve that or dont, its not my business...but you see a lot of guys (who gained a lot of money from ufc) telling that the things are not that great as it looks like (examples of tito ortiz, tim sylvia, or randy now)
even if barnett beat him in m-1, WTF do this have to do with his carrer??? are you saying CroCop IS garbage because of his losses??? well, he beat barnett like dead horse 3 times...so whats the logic behind that???
if the guys wants to get money and be free to do whatever he wants, props to him because lots of people born and die and cant do such a thing in life. If i was him and tought M-1, K-1, Heroes, rioheroes or guys that used to organize Kimbo fights are better for me than UFC, i would say f*CK ufc
end of the meltdown :o :)

I didn't say any of the things you attribute to me. But now that the UFC has Big Nog, Crocop, Jackson, Liddell, Lesnar, etc., please tell me who Fedor is going to fight that will be worth watching or that will make him a bigger star.
I mean, we've already seen him take the short money and beat up on Matt Lindland, who he outweighs by 50 lbs and of course, Matt is no longer the dangerous guy he was 5 years ago when he got Kayoed by the almighty David Terrell.

Mikey's going up to fight Fedor? ;D I think his rumored first opponent is Monson.

I think you got to ask dana a few questions and got a pic with him and now you're a "dana guy" !

Dude,
Fedor is gonna fight Jeff Friggin 'Monson. Is that a fight I'd pay $2 for? No way. It was bad enough watching Monson unable to do anything against Tim Sylvia (and trust me, everyone wanted him to kill Sylvia); now we get to watch Monson do absolutely nothing against Fedor? If they want a guy with big muscles and tattoos, just put Lee Priest in there to fight Fedor.
My point is that everybody else was ALREADY UNDER CONTRACT. Fedor chose not to fight them. So who's left for him? Ken Shamrock? Mark Hunt? Jeff Monson? Oh brother...

I'm just fuckin with ya ed.....
I'd probably pay to see fedor in there against monson just to see how he come's back from his little hiatus, and rome was'nt built in a day,if M-1 starts throwing money out, the higher tier fighters from UFC will eventually start signing..
either way M-1's gonna force dana's hand as far as paying out goes !

I'm sorry I have to say that you guys aren't seeing the real markitibility of this. With superbowl weekend coming up the new org. SHould promote the hell out of Fedor and say Fedor vS. Randy... Then they come out since Fedor's contract with them allows him to fight Randy in UFC. Sure it would be a huge risk. But just imagine that Fedor wins and they leave Randy beat, retired, and Fedor takes the belt. Then the UFC would have to do business with M-1 then you take the MMA by storm and have a wwe vs smackdown type shit... Wait sorry Bluto hacked my account or was it RKBB... :-X :-X :-X :-X
Who cares we know Randy isn't fighting Fedor if Dana has any part of it. No one big is really out of contract that Fedor hasn't already owned. Minus people like monson, which was already stated, but he didnt do shit when he had Tim FUCKING silvia on his back. How much more do you want. A 18 year old girl could've done what Monson did. I just don't see this as exciting yet. Best match up we can hope for is Fedor vs. Alex... ;D ;D ;D I'd pay for that.

Mark Hunt would eat alive the entire UFC catalog light, medium and heavyweight LOL, or at least thats my opinion. So yeah he is a good oponent given the fact he was the guy who got most near of a win from Fedor (more than Crocop, minotauro , etc). Its just watch the fight
I think you are being a little biased here...Think that maybe Fedor choose what was better for him (specially $$$$) while giving him freedom to do whatever he wants (fight sambo competitions, fight agains other fighters or other organizations, things like that). A thing UFC would never do
About every other 'good' fighter being already under contract with other organizations....well... If there is any logic to what are you saying, so EVERY UFC fighter were pussies because if they were man enough, they had to drop ufc, and go to Pride after Fedor...thats doesnt make sense at all
I think the chance of seeying Randy vs Fedor is bigge now than when he was in UFC....Dont you think UFC would (if they got Fedor) put millions and millions of obligations in his contract? They would simply not allow the kind of freedom Fedor had in Pride for instance (and bodog, he made only one fight there)

It would be cool to see that fight go down. I just think that fight would be more interesting compared to the Monson fight.. Fuck that. I guess you got to take a few shitty fights till contracts are up for grabs.

Well, I know Mark Hunt gave Fedor one of his tougher fights, but he's still no thrill to watch and I don't think anyone's harping for a rematch. As for Fedor taking the money, UFC was offering him plenty. My sources tell me that his managers wanted to be paid 50% of his contract directly to them upfront. And you can't compare US marketing dollars to anywhere else in the world. What is this, Who Wants to be a Turkish Millionaire?
As for having "freedom" to fight anywhere, that's just a sign that M1 was desperate and willing to do anything to get Fedor on board. What promotional company allows their fighter to fight for another company and in the process, risks losing their entire investment? Does it make sense that Dana White would pay Fedor 5 million dollars and then let him lose a fight to a non-UFC fighter like Mark Hunt or Josh Barnett? That's just not good business sense. And don't believe that M1 would let Fedor fight in the UFC -- they'd drive an impossible bargain, probably looking for 75% of the PPV rev, which we all know would never happen.
Even though it seems like the only thing that would make sense now is for Dana to talk to M1 about doing a fight with Fedor, find out how much money it'd cost, and call Randy and make him an offer he can't refuse, it will never happen, because if Fedor beats Randy, then Dana White has singlehandedly helped M1 build Rome in a day.
-

yeah, that makes sense. Could possibly Randy negociate his 'possible' fight with Fedor by himself, without UFC? I think that would make things more easy i think...Maybe he himself could negotiate a '1 fight contract' with even m-1, like Fedor did in Bodog
-

Again, you have to look at what makes business sense: If M1 lets Couture fight in M1 for a one-fight deal and Couture beats Fedor, they just gave millions to a "loser" and now have no rights to future Couture fights. So that will never happen.
If Randy wants out of the UFC contract to fight Fedor, he'll probably file suit for a declaratory judgment. Unless the contract is worded poorly and ends in 9 months regardless of whether he fights for the UFC again. In that case, he can just wait it out and fight next June.

True, very true 8)

I hate all this speculating,I'll be glad when m-1's off the ground with it's stable of fighters so we can finally see how the two organizations are going to interact, (if at all) and we can get a general idea of how the publics going to view each organization relative to the other one....
too many questions and high hopes at this point
-
I think its gonna be a while if ever that Dana will let inter agency fights go down.
-

you're probably right but M-1 is ever close to being legit eventually the publics gonna want to see some, especially if m-1 is based here in the states,at least with pride you had 5,000 miles separating the two
-
Thats true! ;D

He already is a superstar bro.
Just becasue you beat off to a Fedor poster on your wall every night, does not make him a superstar...

Done, so back on topic...I would like to see Dana work with these guys on putting some fights together. Especially Fedor vs anyone. Im not sure why, but everyone thinks he needs to PROVE himself. I think hes done that over and over again. Sambo champ, Pride HW champ for last 4-5 years. Not sure what this guy has to do to get some respect. Been #1 in the world forever now, and everyone keeps saying hes a bum...weird. :-\

Just like pushing buttons...you should know that about me. Truth be told, Fedor is one of the best pound for pound fighters today, but he has not been tested by all of the top heavyweights. I think he would have his hands full with Barnett and if he fought Randy, I would not think twice about putting $10k down on Couture...

I realize that you were just being an ass just for the sake of being an ass. I can respect that, however, dont play the MMA math game becaus eyou will lose. This person beat this person, so they sill be the first. Or so and so couldnt finish so and so, but this person did. That is ridiculous, and I know you know more about MMA than that and you know that it can go either way at anytime...

Just like pushing buttons...you should know that about me. Truth be told, Fedor is one of the best pound for pound fighters today, but he has not been tested by all of the top heavyweights. I think he would have his hands full with Barnett and if he fought Randy, I would not think twice about putting $10k down on Couture...
i agree with you, but at the same time, i think he would win (even having a difficult time) this two guys without major problems....I think against Couture, his stand up game would be sufficient to KO him...against Barnett, i would bet in a submission. I also would have no problem in put real money on Fedor (just not 10k :'( )

You think Fedors stand up is sufficient enough to KO Coouture??? If Fedor got a clean shot in he'd take his head off. I would love to see this fight and would like even better to see Couture win. I love Fedor, but it would be cool to see Randys old ass GNP Fedor out.
