Title: halloween's true meaning....
Post by: G.R.H. on October 28, 2007, 04:34:53 PM
do u know or care about  how halloween came to be? it was first started in ireland as a pagan, celtic day when people beleived that the souls of the people who recently died roamed the earth.  people once beleived that if they left food on their doorstep it would scare away the evil spirits who were hungry, hence this is why we "trick or treat".  people once believed that black cats were used as a way power for witches. people also carved turnips before they carved pumkins and carried them around to scare off the spirits. they also dressed up in costume to fool evil spirits so the spirits couldn't possess them.  also, halloween was once known as "sowain" (i think that's how it's spelled), and thats when people honored the lord of the dead. (or something like that). i saw all of this on the history channel.  the name was shortened from "all hallow's eve", the night before all saints day.  also, halloween was once called "mischief night".
