Instead of crying about it, why didn't the Redskins put a big hit on Brady?
-
That would mean they'd have to get to him first.
-
I don't call it running up the score, its more like the "fuck u" touchdown. This game we had two. BB walks up and down the sideline with arms extended and middle fingers up..toward the rest of the NFL. If they can do it against the Colts they will. BS calls, Polian whining all the time, rule changes etc.
-
i dont believe in the term "running up the score".
what should a team like the pats do...just stop playing after theyre up 35-40 points or let the redskins score because their defense cant stop the pats?
its stupid. why should one team be critisized just because the other one sucks
-
Besides handing off the ball on 4th down is the right thing to do. What the hell are u supposed to do. It was a blow out with 4 min left in the 3rd. I really don't know what they were going to do with 19 min. If u let u get injured.
-
This is the NFL. These players get paid millions of dollars to play the game. Matt Cassel was rushing for touchdowns untouched. The pats had there 5th string running back in the game in the fourth. The skins should have made some stops instead of whining about the game. The skins have a very good d. Well actually Gibbs said he had no problem with anything. It was some whiny lb who said it. And of course the talking heads. Yet again it's the media hyping to no end. I dont know what the pundits want the pats to do. Back up qb , second and 4th string players. Simple plays. I mean what should they just hand them the ball if they are up by a lot in the fourth because the big bad pats played good football. Brady rushed for two td's on of which he could easily have thrown for. He choose to keep it and rush. He could have had 32 td's if he was stat padding. Ob he was not. Its not the pats fault the skins got manhandeled. This was a top defense in the league , not some shitty team. The skins where 4 -2.
In 2004 the colts won games by the same margin, of course no one cared ::)

I agree. Just because the pats score a bunch of points then start running it and the skins didn't stop them they are the bad guy. Oh sorry redskins players, heres the ball. Here you can have the whole fourth quarter to score all the points you want since you cant stop us. Now don't feel to bad here are your touchdown's, we will put in out practice players instead of running easy plays with the backup qb and 4th string rb.
It has gotten ridiculous. People are just taking shots at the pats out of jealousy. The colts where throwing the ball when they where up big on the jags. I don't understand what these clowns want the pats to do if they are up by 30 points in the 3rd. Just stop playing? Forget the fact they prepared and need all the practise they can get for the colts. They cant win with these people.
-
I agree. I don't think a team should ever take its foot off the pedal. You never know what can happen. Teams can always come back. The Texans scored 29 in the fourth quarter a week ago. If a team is worried about the opponent "running up the score," they need to play better.
-
Belichick is pissed that the rest of the league shit on the teams three SB titles after spygate and is giving a big FU to the rest of the league. I honestly think in December the Pats could put 60+ up against the Jets at home

I agree completely. I have this image of Belichick standing there with two middle fingers pointed at the TV cameras and muttering to himself "fuck you, I'm going to kick the living shit out of everyone for questioning my greatness".
That 52 point performance was humiliating for the Redskins. Yikes.
BTW, 8 games into the season and Brady already has more TD's than in any other season. That offense is a wrecking machine.

no kidding, these guys look for the slightest disrepect as a motivating tool, now after the whole camera thing and the Jets with a rookie QB and injuries everywhere they are going to get DEMOLISHED in December, and I can't wait to see it. ;D

30 tds to two ints is just retarded.

60 points to the Jets???????????? Try 100-0 and that game will be played in NE. I bet there will be plenty of cops on hand for that one. ;D
-
When it comes to scoring, there are no Marquess of Queensbury rules for gentlemanly behavior. The Patriots have to try their best to score.
However, when it became apparent that Belichick was going to keep his starters in the game to run up the score, Gibbs should have done what any self-respecting coach would do: Put 9 or 10 in the box and blast Brady when he goes back to pass. Hell, the Skins are going to give up the points anyways. That might make Coach Belichick think twice about running up the score with his starters.
-
Thats all u could do..its the Friggen NFL folks. What the hell is the offense supposed to do....it's their job to score points not punt. They have to play Indy this Sunday and that will require 60 mins of football (I hope not ;D) but in all likelyhood it will. These guys have to be ready for 60 min not 43 like in the AFC championship last year.

I agree 100%.
Mr. Brady should be out for 2-3 weeks.

So what would you like the pats to do when they are up huge with 11 min left in the 4th quarter? Just hand the ball to the Skins and say thanks for playing. Castle came in and a ton of the starters came out with more then 5 min left in the fourth. The pats are running Castle and the skins cant even stop him. I dont know what you guys want them to do.
I wonder why Manning never was threatened by fans when he was throwing td passes in garbage time in 2004.

Look at it this way. It's one thing to defeat an opponent. It's another thing to keep your starters in the game to humiliate the basic dignity of the other team. The Pats were up 38 to nothing at the end of the 3rd quarter. Brady and the other starters should have sat out the fourth. Practice running the ball with the second team.
But no, Brady et al. had to tack on a 4th quarter score.
That's Bush league in my books.
And as for Peyton Manning, I don't care what he did last year or this year. We are talking about the Pats not the Colts.
Anyways, I don't see a whole lot of 52-7 games from 2006, do you?

The Colts have a classy organization, coach, and team.
The Patriots do not.
Hope this helps.

Yes, they ran the score up but the other team gets paid to stop them as well.
I don't want to hear the Patriots cry when somebody cheap shots Brady late in a game.

I agree that Belichick isn't brimming with class but to categorize the rest of the team and organization that way is incorrect.
I could list example after example of how much class members of the team and Patriots organization have shown but people don't care right now. Hating Belichick has become a sport all it's own. It's a by-product of their immense talent and skill as a football team and organization.
-
I've never been a patriots/brady fan, but for some strange reason i find myself hoping they give the pats a good old fashioned thrashing.
-
I'm done with the Pats bashing...lets review this so-called classy organization ok
How about this bullshit - March 29, 1984: "Like a Thief in the Night"
What could be worse than one city stealing another's football team? Before dawn on March 29, 1984, Robert Irsay's Baltimore Colts load up Mayflower moving vans and skulk off to Indianapolis.
Now the stroke of final indecency. Stealing away under the cover of darkness, like a common thief in the night. The Baltimore Colts, a once-proud and precious tradition, have apparently been kidnapped from their home and loved ones. It was this city that gave them birth and nurtured a franchise to the pinnacle of fame and fortune.
A despicable injustice. An outrage. First torture, then rape. It could, if the dastardly deed is done, be referred to as the murder of a football team in the first degree. Yes, a foul blow, but Baltimore will be back to rise above the cut-throat tactics that have been inflicted upon it by the sheer madness of money. (John Steadman, The News American, March 29, 1984)
-
Whats so classy...Because Manning is in 9 million ads..or Dungy walks around on the sideline like a fucking zombie except when its time to whine like a bitch and throw the red flag. Why are they the good guys..they turned up the heat last year during the AFC championship game...while it was known that the Pats had a flu epidemic. The there is this...
The Colts' complaints about some apparent defensive-holding infractions that went uncalled in the final minutes of their loss at New England in last season's AFC title game were a catalyst to the offseason directive by the league's competition committee for officials to crack down on clutching-and-grabbing tactics by defensive backs. And the stricter rules enforcement that resulted played a major role in this season's league-wide offensive exploits, which included quarterback Peyton Manning breaking Dan Marino's 20-year-old NFL single-season record for touchdown passes.
The media ballwashing for Manning BEFORE his SB win was unbelievable. So its now Classy to pipe fake crowd noise into your stadium for an advantage? The League told them if they where caught, they would be fined for CHEATING.
AND YES I HAVE ALL THIS CRAP SAVED BECAUSE I FUCKING HATE THEM....sorry.
-
I can go all night ;D
Colt's comeback vs. Tampa Bay: Colt's miss Field Goal - oh wait there's a flag for LEAPING!!!!!!!! WTF is leaping. Only time called in the history of the game.
DEN playoff game: League warns John Lynch they will be watching his every move against the Colt's. First time he gets physical with their receivers they are going to eject him. Give me another example when they ever did such a thing? Colts are a bunch of pu$$ies.
PITT playoff game: Polomaulu INT - oh wait here's the ref to to say it is incomplete. Head of officials admits BLOWN CALL!!!
Same game: PIT lined up on offense. Entire Colt's defense jumps offside. The ref throws the flag - ON PITTSBURGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Film clearly shows no PIT player even twitched no matter how hard you try and find it. Refs convene and come to their senses - NO PENALTY ON ANYONE!!!! again WTF
NE last year: Interference Penalty on Hobbs for "FACEGUARDING"!!!!!!!!! No such penalty exists - there must be CONTACT in order to have an interference penalty. Except when you play the Colts. Again, head of referees admits BLOWN CALL!!!!!!!!!! Official letter from the NFL.
Same game: Troy Brown called for Offensive Pass Interference. Bullsh*t call. All he did was run his route.
Jeff Saturday holds on every play. Never called.
-
According to a story in today's Boston Herald, the Colts have filed a complaint with the league concerning scheduling. Tony Dungy confirmed that a complaint was lodged.
Apparently, Bill Polian and company are upset that the Colts have to play a road game (in Carolina) after a short week. They are also upset that the game comes immediately following Carolina's bye week.
Funny, I don't recall them complaining last season when the Patriots faced an even more intense version of that scenario - they played on the road in Minnesota on Monday night and then had to face a Colt team that was coming off it's bye week. That game ended up being the tie breaker which gave the Colts home field in the AFCC game.
God, does the whining ever end with this guy??? Here's a partial list of Polian's complaints to the league over the past several years:
1. Complained about Pats use of injury timeouts after regular season game in 2003.
2. Complained about defensive contact after getting beaten in 2003 AFCC game, resulting in the "increased emphasis", the so-called "Patriot Act".
3. Complained to the league about the way compensatory draft picks are awarded after the 2004 season, saying that the Patriots were being awarded too many picks
4. Complained about the condition of the field at Gillette stadium before last year's game. Once again Polian got his way, as the league into forcedthe Patriots to re-sod the field right before the game
5. Complained about the alleged rough treatment of the Colts' receivers in the Indy-Baltimore game just prior to the AFCC game, in an obvious attempt to plant a seed in the heads of the officials (judging by the calls the Colts got I'd say it worked).
I have an idea - how about they just cancel all the games from now on and have league officials meet every February and award the Colts the Lombardi Trophy? Maybe that will stop Polian's whining...maybe.
POlian and Dingy are both on the competition committe....complete bullshit. I bet u wouldn't see Stallworth whining like a bitch if he was manhandled by a member of the Colts secondary..he run them the fuck over the next time he got the ball.
YES the hate keeps me warm....some people in NE hate the yanks..i hate the Dolts.
-
Yes, they ran the score up but the other team gets paid to stop them as well.
I don't want to hear the Patriots cry when somebody cheap shots Brady late in a game.
I agree with this. I would have my guys blast Brady three times in a row late.
That would get him pulled when he is up by 4 tds.
If Brady gets hurt one of these days late in a blow out, how smart is Belicek going to look? He shouldn't be pulling him to prevent him from scoring, he should pull Brady before he gets hurt in a meaningless part of the game.
-
After this game I think u'll see that if they continue this way..they have yet to have to play 60 full min of football.
-

I disagree. I think they have been playing a full 60 mins. That is why everyones panties are in a bunch about running up the score.

Not true , Matt C was in along with a bunch of third stringers long before the fourth q was over.

The Colts have a classy organization, coach, and team.
The Patriots do not.
Hope this helps.
Thats right tre. Ignore the fact the colts ran it up all through 2004. It is 100 percent fact the colts ran it up big time in 04. Why do you ignore this? I forgot when Dungy was bashing gays, or Manning was teabgging people and exposing himself to female trainers in college none of that counts. You hate the patriots because they win.
Bill Polian has called for rival teams players legs to be broken while abusing staff in the jets press box. Just last week Polian and Dungy where crying to the league about an unfair schedule. They have to play two road games in a short week. Boohoo superbowl champs, the pats did it in o4 as well as a few other teams also. How about Polian using his rules committee position to have rules "enforced". Gloating in an article about how the colts where far to good for networks like cbs to carry them more often because they sipmply blow people out. Not very classy if you ask me.
You paint with a broad brush out of hatred for a winning franchise. Please tell me the pats players that do so many unclassy things. There are plenty of classy patriots. How many arrests or legal issues have the pats had? Brady has always been a class act. As well as many many other pats players.
If the media is sick of the pats they should not have crowned them the classiest organization around up until a few years ago. They build you up then tear you down. All this negativity is great. Shows how people are taking shots at one of the two best franchise of the decade ( pats / colts). People are taking shots because the pats win and contend year after year while there own teams dont make the playoffs.
What team do you root for?
-
or Manning was teabagging female trainers in college
where did you hear this ???
-
where did you hear this ???
Back when Manning was at UT a female trainer reported Manning for exposing his ball bag to her. Manning claimed he was trying to "moon" his fellow teamates. As if showing a woman your nut sack from behind = mooning someone, haha. UT came to a settlement with the woman out of court and she moved out of town.
There was also a reported teabgging incident at some point but that one was just alleged. The exposing of the ball bag one was a legit issue settled by UT.
You never heard about this?
-
There is more to it then this...I don't have the facts but it came up again because according to the settlement Manning was never supposed to bring it up but it came up ina book or interview and she filed suit all over again or something along those lines.

I agree with all of this. Unfortunately that's how capitalism works in the NFL...except for Green Bay. Since GB is not owned by an individual, the team would be dissolved rather than relocated.
-
Its an old story but there is more to it then just making money...fanbase/history etc..and they just moved in the middle of the night. Ok no big deal......but please don't call em classy. While i'm still ranting anybody see Patrick Crayton on NFL Live
Wingo:"So you don't think the Patriots are the best team?"
Crayton:"No, I think the Cowboys are the best team"
Wingo:"But they beat you by 20 whatever points"
Crayton:"Well, the sun shines on a dog's ass every once in a while.
They got frog stomped......enough already. If it were me, i'd say yeah they're a great team and we lost and we hope to get another crack at them. That would be it.
-
Polian is a whiner. But he is trying to give his team every possible % chance of winning. If re-sodding the grass gives Harrison a .2 second headstart over a defensive back, it could be the difference between winning and losing.
On the other hand - the Pats are ADMITTED cheaters. I lost all respect for them. In my eyes, their 8-0 record comes with an asterisk. They admitted they broke league rules and stole opposing team info. And since it came form a fmr coach with the Jets, it's safe to say the pats have records on most teams in the league.
Hard to respect admitted cheaters.

Crayton is a total bonehead. The funny part is the pats beat the cowboys minus there best tight end, There number one and two running backs and a hall of fame all pro defensive linemen. This clown is just another example of sour grapes and jealousy. I wonder what the score would have been if the Cowboys played minus Barber, Jones, Jason Whitton and There best defensive player who is not as good as Seymour.
I have no problem with a player thinking his team is better. Hell hate the pats all you want , god knows I hated the Yankees when they where dominant.. But don't sit there and throw shit around because you cant hang.
-
By a guy who would not be starting with Terry Glen in the line-up. ::)...just shut up.
-
So what if they ran up the score?
These are grown men, if they can't handle it they shouldn't be playing.
This isn't the "we don't keep score because we are sensitive to children's feelings" league.
-

The pats never admitted to stealing any team info. Stealing signals is perfectly legal and done by every team in the NFL. The pats got into trouble for having a video camera on the sidelines. Read the rule in the NFL handbook. You could use a microphone lip readers and a radio and you would be fine. You cannot have the video machine, that was the issue. Which by the mouth of the Comish himself had no outcome on the jets game at all. Further more the Comish said he was 100 percent confident the pats provided him with all the material he asked for dating back to 2001. Goodel then found no violation's with any of the tapes he looked at, Making your aterisk argument opinion, surley not fact. Further more Mangini said he was not the one who dimed out anyone.
If you think what the pats did was wrong fine. But please show me where the pats admitted to stealing other teams info. Also show me where the comish said the infraction led to an advantage in the jets game. He blatently said it did not. Then after reviewing all the information provided he said there was no further violations and that was that. Stop making things up.

Jack Del Rio, Jacksonville Jaguars: “You play to win. If you can score, score. Your job, as a defense, as an opponent, is to slow them down. Offensively you want to score. Obviously, late in the fourth quarter you’re going to make sure your starters don’t get hurt and things like that going forward but you still keep playing football.”
Herm Edwards, Kansas City Chiefs: “I just think that obviously [the Patriots] are going at a pace right now, they’re just playing. They’re having fun playing football. You’re caught in a bad situation there when you have a lead like that. All coaches have been in that situation. Sometimes you’ve been the guy that had the lead and sometimes you’ve been the guy on the other side of it. And that’s what’s great about athletics. People always look into things, trying to figure out is there something that he’s trying to do or say. The coach that is winning, does he run the ball on fourth down or does he pass the ball on fourth down? I don’t know what to tell you. It’s just one of those deals. There’s a lot being made out of things and at the end I think the thing you’ve got to realize is this. You’ve got a team that is playing very very good, setting all kinds of record. When I watch those guys play, they’re having fun. They’re just having fun playing football.”
Brad Childress, Minnesota Vikings: “You’re talking about the Washington Redskins and one of the highest paid coaches in the National Football League and a staff full of head coaches and they’re coaching, too. Games can get left-handed like that, unfortunately, and New England has a way of making you be left-handed.”
Lane Kiffin, Oakland Raiders: “Coach Gibbs, I believe, said he had no issues with it. It’s so hard to win and so hard to score I don’t think that there really is running up the score. You’re just playing your players and trying to get better. In this league your backups do have so few opportunities to play that, from my perspective, if we were ever in that situation we would definitely run plays and put in some of our younger guys that otherwise don’t play.”
Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers: “We’re responsible for keeping their score down. They aren’t. That’s just being competitive. That’s what this game is about. That’s what any game is about. I have no comment or opposition to them ringing up as many points as they’re capable of.”
-

Do you believe Mangini?
And they violated a league rule to gain a compettiive advantage - that's cheating.
-
Instead of crying about it, why didn't the Redskins put a big hit on Brady?
If the Skins would have came to play then the Pats wouldnt have had to put a hurtn on them like they did. I say run it up as far as they can. Proving a point I think!
-
Do you believe Mangini?
And they violated a league rule to gain a compettiive advantage - that's cheating.
I think Mangini is a bad coach who tried to cover his own ass not realizing the shit storm he would release. Scott Piolli and the jets gm are very close friends. The media hyped this up , not the NFL. Mangini is getting ripped left and right now in days for his bad coaching. Not the outcome he hoped for I think. What I am saying is the NFL never said Mangini ratted anyone out. Your post rifles of things as fact that are not accurate. People know who did the ratting, but Mangini never said he did.
Also how exactly did the pat's gain any advantage from that tape vs the jets? The commishiner of the NFL said the tape had absolutely no outcome on the game. Thats what he said word for word. He then found no problem with any of the info he requested dating back to 2001.
The competative advantage came from having the video machine on the field. The NFL themselves said the pats did not benefit from the tape at all. Which makes your cheating point during the jets game moot.
Pretty sure teams violate leauge rules every day. Just so happens the patriots are hated because they win a lot , and there head coach is not that great with the media , so the media went ape shit at the chance to go after him. Totally blown out of proportion ::)
-

If you had to bed your life's savings here on this question...
Was this the first time the Pats had videotaped an opponent?
What would your answer be?
-
If you had to bed your life's savings here on this question...
Was this the first time the Pats had videotaped an opponent?
What would your answer be?
Are you going to refute anything I say or keep asking me open ended questions? The commissioner of the NFL said flat out, " he was 100 percent certain the patriots had provided him with all the video , paperwork and documentation he had requested dating back to 2001". Goodel then flat out told Bob Costas he reserved the right to further punish the patriots if he found anything that violated league rules.
After reviewing the requested informantion Goodel found no evidence of further league violations and no further action was taken. So if the pats taped anyone nothing on those tapes violated any rules.
The NFL said they didn't have anything on any tapes that would cause further punishment. I personally think the patriots where scouting signs trying to gain a competative advantage, just like every other team in the NFL. The problem was they tried to expose a loophole in a rule and the comish did not agree. They where punished for having a video machine on the sideline. That was the competative advantage. Not the tape itself which was said by the comishiner himself to have had no outcome on the jets game at all.
The media took off with this. Trust me if Beli was lovable this would not have been what it was. You ever hear anyone accusing Mike Shanahan of cheating? Wonder why? During his sb runs he was cheating the cap putting more players on the field then he could afford. They got busted, punished and no one cared. To me thats a lot worse then trying to archive sings with a "video machine"
-
Body we can't defend this. Not because its wrong, I think all kinds of competative edges are sought by everybody. We can't defend this because:
The Pats win to much now..imagine saying that 10 years ago ::)
BB is a friggen grouch
Nobody here plays or coaches, nor has ties to the NFL and can't relate. I think thats big. We view it as fans and as a game, they view it as a business with alot riding on it and we, as fans, can't relate. The Pats got caught doing something that everybody does.
I'd be alot madder if BB or Brady started saying things like, " we feel we're the better team even though we lost' or Pioli and Kraft started whining to the NFL about rules and scheduals. Hell real fans opf the Dolts have come out and atleast admited that Polian is out of control and that having the coach and GM on the comp committe is a bad idea.
-
I agree with you. People just hate the pats like people hated the cowboys years ago. Because they win.
My point is half the people throwing things out there don't even know what they are talking about. The biggest thing being the fact Goodel flat out said "the tape" had no outcome on any game this year. Not to mention he found no wrong doing after investigating the pats paperwork and video all the way back to 2001.
The pats got into trouble for having a "video machine" as the rule states on the field taping. Those are the facts.

Tre check out these examples dating all the way back to 98 of that classy guy Dungy running it up! Do you think he's classless now or are you going to rationalize this disgusting display of arrogant behavior? What's with all these examples of those classy colts scoring points late in the fourth when the game is out of hand?
1998 Week 17 (with Tampa Bay): Up 28-0 vs. Cincinnati, Dungy has starting RB Mike Alstott, still in the game, score a TD with under 10 minutes to go to push the score to 35-0. Alstott was Pro Bowler that year.
2000 Week 2 (with Tampa Bay): Up 34-0 vs. Chicago in the 4th Quarter, Pro Bowl starting RB Mike Alstott is still in the game and scores Tampa's final TD to make the score 41-0.
2000 Week 9 (with Tampa Bay): Up 34-13 with 5 minutes to go vs. Minnesota, Dungy has starting QB Shaun King throw a 16 yard TD pass to starting WR Reidel Anthony to make the score 41-13.
2001 Week 10 (with Tampa Bay): Up 33-14 with less than 10 minutes to go, has starting QB Brad Johnson throw a TD to make the score 40-14. Later, Ronde Barber intercepts a pass and returns it for a TD right at the two minute warning. That makes the score 46-21 BEFORE THE CONVERSION. At the two minute warning, Dungy GOES FOR TWO and gets it to make the final 48-21.
2004 Week 13 (with Indy): Versus Tennessee in the 4th Quarter, Dungy has Peyton Manning throw a TD pass to Reggie Wayne to make the score 48-24. Later in the 4th Quarter, he kicks a field goal to make the score 51-24.
2004 Playoffs (with Indy): Up 42-24 versus Denver at two minutes left, Dungy has his team punch in another TD to make the score 49-24.
2005 Week 5 (with Indy): Up 21-3 with less than 6 minutes left vs. San Francisco (who ended up with less than 200 yard offense for the day), Dungy has Manning throw a TD pass from 18 yards out to make the score 28-3.
2004 Week 9 (with Indy): Versus the Patriots and up 40-21 with under 6 minutes to play, Dungy goes for 2 after the final Indy TD. They don't get it.
2006 Week 2 (with Indy): Up 36-17 with 2:38 left in the game, Dungy has the Colts punch in another TD to make the score 43-17
2007 Week 7 (with Indy): Up 22-7 with under 4 minutes to play, Manning throws a 35 yard TD pass to Dallas Clark to make the score 29-7

YEAH...classy. Gimme a break. We need to play 60 min of football every week to make it and win the SB. BB is making sure his team plays 60 min of football every week to make it to the SB.

If the pats took a knee to soon you know all the pundits and bitches would be saying how arrogant they are because they gave up so early. It never ends.

It's pretty obvious the media's hate for BB has become out of control. ESPN runs a good v evil article with Dungy and Belichick, it's ridiculous. The problem is all these "experts" on ESPN etc.. have bigger egos than Belichick.

Thos classy colts would never run it up. The pats are just classless!
How's this for a four-game stretch of NFL greatness?

That quartet of one-sided scores comes to you courtesy of the 2004 Indianapolis Colts from a November-December period during which Peyton Manning and Company annihilated the Texans, Bears, Lions, and Titans, respectively. And, you know it's funny, I don't remember one person whining about them running up the score.
In fact, quite the opposite happened. The Colts were celebrated as the bright and shining star of the NFL. Following the 51-24 win over Tennessee, the Indy Star's Bob Kravitz wrote, "At this point, we're not just watching football anymore. We're watching history. Every week, the Indianapolis Colts' offense uses the football field as its canvas, and every week, it creates an art form that is distinct from everything else in the copycat NFL."
Flash forward almost three years, and the very same Kravitz wrote about the juggernaut New England Patriots, "In the last three weeks, New England has scored 48, 49, and 52 points, inspiring inquiring minds to wonder, 'Did the Patriots pile on?' And every week, the obvious answer is, 'Duh.'"
Whether the Patriots are needlessly running up the score on a weekly basis is open for debate of course, but not much. Tom Brady and Company are pounding teams to the brink of humiliation. At this level of the game, what's the problem with that? I get the feeling much of the national media would rather witness Bill Belichick coddle the opposition with concern for their feelings, stroking them with a false sense of concession compassion.
I can only imagine what Greg Easterbrook and the like might have written the morning after Wilt Chamberlain poured in 100 back in 1962, probably demanding an explanation as to why Wilt didn't sit out the fourth quarter against the poor, poor Knicks.
In any case, you might have noticed there's quite a clash on tap for Sunday in the new, touchy-feely National Football League, where bodies and spirits are demolished and demoralized on a weekly basis, but with the unwritten rule, apparently, that coaches shall exhibit empathy for the opponent, lest things get too embarrassing. It is the first time in league history that two undefeated teams have met this late into a season, and is likely a game of major importance in determining which team gets home field advantage in January's AFC Championship Game, a.k.a. the de facto Super Bowl.
It's the 8-0 Patriots against the 7-0 Colts, or "Good vs. Evil" as both ESPN and Fox have touted the past week in identical headlines.
Such a tired double standard exists when it comes to the Colts and Patriots. When it is the Patriots and Tom Brady that threaten the record-performances put up by Manning and the Colts in the past, folks start to get nervous. The love-fest that exists for Madison Avenue's favorite son extends to his coach Tony Dungy, a nice, congenial man who takes the time out every Sunday morning to bake for the team on the opposite sideline. Or so, we should think.
On the other side this weekend will be Bill Belichick, the gruff, maniacal genius who tends to videotape the opposition, gives curt answers at press conferences, and had his resume come into question when spy-gate broke earlier this season. The man hates cookies.
If you could predict any one statement to backfire this season, it would be when pundits began to question the past Super Bowl triumphs of these Patriots in the wake of spy-gate. You might as well have just handed them Mr. Lombardi's trophy right then and there, because it virtually guaranteed a perfect season. These are the same Patriots who take the slightest dig and turn it into a rallying call that William Wallace would envy. Question the validity of their crowning achievements? Like there wasn't going to be a price to pay for that.
But because the Patriots are the team – and coach – everybody loves to hate, there's something inherently wrong with winning big-time. After plain embarrassing the Redskins on Sunday at Gillette, 52-7, the hue began. "The Patriots are running up the score." "The Patriots show no class." "The Patriots are showing the game disrespect."
Please. As Gary Shelton wrote in the St. Petersburg Times, "Scoring 52 points doesn't disrespect the game; giving up 52 does."
You don't like it? Fine. Stop them. Do something to slow down the steaming, oncoming train that is New England. Can't do it? Tip your hat and call it a day. Or, whine about it into the ensuing days when you really should be preparing for your next opponent. Your call. But please do not try to make the argument that what the Pats are doing is bad for the game. It is certainly up for debate, but anyone who celebrated what the Colts did in 2004, then turns around and points the reproach finger at the Patriots isn't invited to the argument.
For the record, during that aforementioned four-game stretch for the Colts, backup quarterback Jim Sorgi threw exactly four passes. Patriots backup Matt Cassel, the man everyone argues should be in the game for junk time, lest the Pats further embarrass the opposition in the fourth – OK who are we kidding, second – quarter, has thrown five the last two games.
Remember that angry demand nationwide for Sorgi when Manning and Company were out there -- not embarrassing -- but showing good sportsmanship against their opponents with 30-plus point differentials?
Of course, everyone's complaints about this running up the score nonsense comes when the Patriots and Colts are set for another showdown, their first since last January's AFC title classic, the game that essentially prompted Belichick to award Brady with the toys he's never been privy to in the game. You got a problem with Caldwell, Tom. OK, here's Moss. Have fun, kid.
I fear what might happen if they run it up on the beloved Colts. There might be an investigation into whether Kraft legally bought the team 13 years ago. Maybe Indy will get another rule change instituted.
After beating the Texans, 41-9 on Nov. 14 three years ago, ESPN's Eric Allen addressed the issue as to whether or not Manning should have been pulled in the fourth quarter. "I don't think they should have for two reasons. One, right now Manning is extremely hot and has the opportunity to break a few very hard to reach records. It's nice to see a guy in the zone that much still on the field making it happen for his team."
That was then. That was Manning. When it comes to Brady and the Patriots, the story completely changes. For the Colts, it's history, and special. For the Patriots, it's smug and disrespectful. And for those waiting for Belichick's comeuppance, well, let's just hope you're comfortable.
-
. If they can do it against the Colts they will. BS calls, Polian whining all the time, rule changes etc.
;D I can't wait. Stock up on beer so you can drink away your sorrows after they lose.
-
you know...these guys are profesionals that make a whole lot of money... Who cares if they run up the score. They are big boys they can take it. Give me a break.they are not children who will be emotionally wounded for life from the humiliation of a good whooping on the football field. They are men. I say if you can score 50 points against the Colts more power to ya...If a team plays that bad they deserve it.
BOO f#$king hoo!! They ran up the score...waaa waaa.

It shouldn't be that way. These guys should be allowed to run their stats up as much as they can..good bargaining tool for more money later..
-
I agree. Let these guys play ball. I never whined when the colts had a historic O and the pounded people. How about the d. If you completely shut out a team should the d start handing teams touchdowns because they feel bad?Should a team take a few plays of so the opposing team can feel better they can't make plays...
Being a colts fan you know how it is. You have had a historic O many times. I applaud you being fair with your post. This whole evil running it up nonsense is 100 percent top sirlion hate served up by the jealous chefs of America. The chargers POUNDED the pats in 2005 , no one said a word.
I didn't see anyone talking when the titans relaxed and the Texans scored 30 points in the 4th quarter and almost won. If you cant stop a back up qb making simple throws and running his 5th string rb like in the skins game you don't deserve to whine. The skins had one of the best d's in the NFL.
But hey the easy way out is to point the blame on the evil bad guys instead of yourself. The thing that kills me is these same pundits throwing insults at the pats where the same people touting them as the greatest thing since sliced bread back in 04. The truth is people are sick of the pats winning so they are taking shots at them any chance they get. While teams like the colts who just won the big one are the darling "good" guys who in the past ran it up on people with the best of em.
-
What the hell is running up the score. This isn't a sandlot pickup game. These are pro's. They get paid and paid well to give it all they've got for 60 minutes. What are they supposed to do? Fumble on purpose, miss passes on purpose? If the Redskins had any class or talent, they would of never let any team put a wooping on them instead of crying about how strong the Pats are and how they ran up the score. Stop em, just try!

I agree. Not to mention,as I said before..these guys should be allowed to run up their stats every chance they get..especially if it's "easy pickins" so to speak. That is their bread and butter..bargaining amo when their contract is up.
P.S. HEADHUNTER EVERYONE knows how much you love Polian and the colts...I dare ya to go put a bunch of crap on his wikipedia page. ;D http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Polian
I don't know how that works...I have heard just about anyone can edit those things...

How about the steelers putting big Ben back in late in the fourth while up by 30 points AFTER he was hurt? What about the cowboys throwing td passes late in the fourth up huge last week? How about those lions throwing td's while up by over 30 points to 0? Just more proof of the jealousy / biased opinions driving these unfair shots writers are taking at the pats. No one said these other teams where running it up ::)
Btw that whole 60 min thing worked out pretty good huh? Beli was not trying to run up scores. He was conditioning his team to go 60 full min. And while the refs where out of bullshit calls to screw the pats with , and guys like Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis where taking themselves out of the game due to exhaustion, the pats where pulling the colts heart out when it counted. Yet another example of arm chair qb's and bonehead agenda pushing writers looking like fools.
-
who was complaining?

who was complaining?
Have you been reading this board latley? The national media was ALL OVER the pats for running it up for weeks. When infact they where preparing for games where they need to play 60 full min. Like the afccg last year.
-
yeah I read what you guys have been saying...I just don't pay that much attention to the media so I just wondered wgho "they" were..thought maybe the Redskins were whining or something.

Redskins , dolphins etc etc. Most every talking head with a agenda. Anyone Belichick ever cut off in traffic. Anyone the pats ever cut. Anyone who ever lost a sb to the pats. The entire state of Indianapolis and New York.
Not talking about you since you are all class and unbiased. Infact you are prolly the most fair colts fan I haver ever heard speak. Kudos for that ;)
-
I am not nearly as loyal as you are...they start sucking like they did when I was a kid and I root for someone else.hahahah
and man back then they stunk big time.
