Title: Seated cable rows ??

anybody get good results with these ?

         This is an exercise i never do, i do dbell rows, tbar rows, hammer strength rows-but the gym i might have to substitute these because of the gym im going to.

Yeah i prefer dumbbell and barbell rows as-well, but sometimes i will finish my back workout with cable rows, get a good squeeze, good finishing exercise i reckon. Stick with the free weight rows if you can, but if you have too use the cable row, it wont hurt.

When done correctly, it can be a very effective exercise.

I used to do one-handed seated cable rows.

Worked very nicely, especially if your gym is short on heavy DB's.

Seated cable rows are excellent with a bar attached that allows you to place your hands shoulder width apart (overhand grip) - do the rows seated with them instead of close-grip and you'll see definite improvements - I swear by them now as part of my back routnie.

i do seated with a wide bar a little higher than to the stomach that most do.

pretty much every single pro ive ever seen training do seated rows, just an observation

do you move forward at all during them-or stay strictly in the same position ? do these ever bother your back ?

Yes I tend to move forward - it offers a greater stretch in the lats and when I reach failure on my set I reach forward (still holding the bar) and hold it there for a few seconds longer - it hurts like hell but it's effective - great for grip strength and keeping the back supple.

i used to feel it my lower back which is my weak point but by doing them higher i think it targets that area less

I should probably do them more than I do currently.  I like them, and they are much harder than bb or db rows to completely bastardize.

they're awesome...

here's the list of exercises that are must for a huge ass back that will intern give you a bigger bench too!!

bent over barbell rows
t-bar rows
seated cable rows
pull ups
dumbbell rows

in no particular order but those 4 will really blow you up if done right. I just rotate them in and out but seated cable rows have really helped my midde back and helped me make bent over barbell rowing alot easier as well. When you move up in weight on one exercise it'll sure benefit the others.

i like the stretch to my lats on these exercise. But i also feel that a semi-strict technique (Upper-Body slighty lean forward in the stretched position) give me better results than doing it always sitting straight.
I think it`s because people use way to much there arms (Biceps/brachialis) in the strict version. I use my arms as hooks, and let my back & lats make the work.
I do it as my 2nd or 3rd Back exercise working with relative high weights (330-340 lbs) for relative high reps (15-20).

a good exercise. one of many. they activate the back, why wouldnt they work? get progressively stronger on these and they will give you good results.

They are an EXCELLENT exercise! Be sure not to use the standard "close grip" little "V" handle though. It does not allow for proper shoulder extension. (Which is the main function of the exercise). My favorite handle is the Medium Neutral grip. Thats the one that looks like it has a "D" on each end. I prefer the medium grip (for me that's the 24" handle, not the 36").

They are truly on of the best exercises for your back. They should be included in your routine even when you have access to all the others you mentioned. You should always be switching it up. Never do the same routine and exercises each time. So alternate the seated cable row into your routine every few workouts.

This is actually the best way to activate the lats on this variation.  It works even better if you use the extension ropes instead of the bar.
