Since Special Ed was the first one to suggest Frank Mir as Lesnar's 1st UFC opponent, I will take the credit and promoter's fee for this match, thank you.

Did you say this first.. I know I was very close to the same time as you and even mentioned that Mir would be a good test as he was an ex champ. I do think you beat me to who, but I did say why.. Mir will get taken down and pounded out same thing that happened in K-1 Brock in the first... :-X

My Quote on 10-21-07:

We know a few things about NCAA Championship-level wrestlers:

1. They can't easily be taken down.
2. They have exceptional balance.
3. They know the importance of conditioning and endurance.
4. They have a deep understanding of positioning.
5. They have superior takedown abilities.
6. They have superior intestinal fortitude (they don't quit!).

So if you factor in Brock's athleticism, his agility and his strength, you have a guy with the makings of an MMA monster.

The biggest wildcard with wrestlers is their ability to take a punch. In MMA, everyone gets clocked. Some wrestlers like Henderson have granite jaws and some like Couture have glass jaws. Lesnar will get hit and none of his abilities will help him if he can't take a shot.

That being said, look for the UFC to match Lesnar up with a non-puncher his first time out like Frank Mir and avoid a dangerous striker like CroCop.

Watching Brock's MMA fight, it was obvious that he's been training a lot of BJJ. He looked more like a bjj guy than a wrestler. Don't be surprised if Brock starts submitting people.

Frank Mir is awful now and will come in overweight and unconditioned like he has his last handful of fights. Biggest waste of talent in the UFC.

The following is a blog entry from the official website of Frank Mir, where the former UFC Heavyweight champion discusses his upcoming fight with the debuting Brock Lesnar at UFC 81 on February 2nd.

Hello everyone.

Hey thanks so much for your interest in keeping in touch.

As you can see or have heard I have signed to fight Brock Lesnar on Feb 2nd for the UFC. I am really looking forward to this fight and would like to first thank Joe Silva and Dana White and Lorenzo Fertita for offering me this fight and making it happen. I have fought for the UFC for years and consider it my home. They provide me with opportunities of a lifetime over and over again.

I would also like to thank Brock Lesnar for signing on for the fight. My roots are in Karate then Wrestling then Brazilian Jiu Jitsu so I have huge respect for wrestlers. Top wrestlers have a work ethic that is second to none. Brock is an excellent athlete and had an unbelievable collegiate career where he simply dominated. I am looking forward to the challenge.

I was hoping that I would be offered a fight on the Super Bowl Card since it is a huge event and takes place in Las Vegas. I love fighting at home in front of the people that I know and in front of the fans in Las Vegas. The electricity in the event center is outrageous at the UFC fights where ever they are in the world and especially wild in Las Vegas. There is something about this town that makes people go nuts.

I will be working on my ground game, stand up, and conditioning for this fight.

My opponent is an outstanding athlete so I will have to be prepared for anything and everything. It's MMA. Anything can happen and often times things happen fast so proper preparation is a must.

He's actually training with Greg Nelson (Sean Sherks trainer) up in Minn.  Here is a vid, his stand up still looks atrocious.

I'm going with Mir by sub as well, he did train with Randy for a bit, so I think his wrestling will be pretty sharp, I don't see him taking Brock down or anything, but I do see him being prepared for Brocks wrestling.  Brock on the other hand has a decent trainer, but lacks any good heavyweight training partners.

I still can't believe this is the main event.  I will not pay 40 bucks for this alone, I wouldn't pay 20 bucks for this fight alone.
