If you furnace has a pilot light, it will look very much like this.  Two tubes leading from a regulator up to a point near the main burners. One carries the gas up to the pilot, and the other is the "thermocouple".  The job of the thermocouple is to turn the gas off to the pilot burner if the flame goes out.  This works by, if the flame goes out, it cools off and causes a valve in the regulator to close.  To light it, you have to put a flame to the pilot burner, and push a button, usually red, this opens the valve to the pilot light, and lets the gas through, after the pilot is going, you keep holding the button for a minute to let the "thermocouple" get hot, and keep the valve open on it own.

If you furnace is too new, it won't have a pilot light, it lights with an electric spark.

Thank you!!!!   Yes, that stuff all looks familiar!  Where do I put the flame though?

And the instructions are talking about turning and pressing the gascock thing.  If it's talking about that will there be a red button too?  I don't see one.

Thanks :)

The flame goes in the circle.

The gas cock and button are combined on your furnace, push down on the gas cock as if were a button.

Well, I had an elastic hair band around my hair that I wore to the gym today so I put it around my head and positioned it over my eyebrows to save them in case a firey explosion were to burst forth from my furnace when I tried to light it.......

What latitude you live at? Gulf coast Texas here (Houston), and some furnace techs say turning the pilot off after the heating season is over makes the furnace last longer.  The reason given is that during the summer, the pilot flame deposits moisture inside the furnace and makes it rust.
