$10K diamond earrings found by garbage man
Post-Crescent services
MADISON — Ron Lund wasn’t surprised when he heard a jewelry store accidentally threw out a pair of diamond earrings worth $10,000, but he was surprised when he found them.
Lund, who works for Pellitteri Waste, picks up garbage from more than 130 businesses, including a jewelry store.
Lund said he knew where the store’s items fell in his load, so that helped narrow the search.
He grabbed a bag and found the earrings inside. The search took about eight minutes.
The jewelry store owner gave Lund $80 as a reward.

If the search took eight minutes and he got $80, that's 10 bucks a minute - not bad going for doing fuck all I say.

Good call. I have a friend named BigJ who spends all day digging in garbage, and he doesn't make a cent.

Proper decorum dictates that a reward be at least a tithing of the value of the object recovered (that's 10%)... anything less is a affront to the dignity of those who do the decent, honest thing. In situations where the favour does not have a pecuniary value, the compensation should be commensurate with the benefit to the beneficiary... put should be refused in situations where the beneficiary cannot afford the gratuity.
This is the biggest problem I see with Americans... they have no understanding of how to behave with class.

A friend of mine stayed in college to do a PhD in computational quantum mechanics... five years of hard graft later he finally has his doctorate... and he's pedaling tourists around Dublin city centre in a rickshaw for tips: no jobs in this shithole country.
Myself, I'm seriously considering emigrating to the US, you guys have it good...
