I've always thought it was before, but just wanted to see if i was right.
-
Ive never weighed my food I just always look at the package and eye the amount from how much the package says to how much i want to get
-
weighing your food, IMO, is ridiculous. if its not weed, coke, e pills or a contestant on the biggest loser then there ain't no reason to weigh that shit!
-
i dont but its before

i dont but its before
the proper way is before cooking, but by the time Ive weighed it, I'm so goddamn hungry i eat the scale too
-

Bluto is right it is before most of the time.
With things like oats they will actually say dry or cooked.
Many years ago I did weigh my stuff so I have a good idea of what what is what bye looking at portion sizes.

I always recommend weighing most foods "after" cooking. Then when you are out to eat or someone else prepares your food, you"ll be able to tell how much you're eating. This helps you stay within your calorie and protein ranges, etc.

Dude, enjoy your meals!
weighing food is idiotic, don't take it over the top.
If you weigh, do it before.

I think weighinh your food when you start out is a pretty good idea , it teaches your portion control and size. When I first competed I weighed all my protein out and now I dont because I can tell how much I eat by looking at it. There is nothing more anal than weighing food , like DK said enjoy it man.

You have a point there, though.
In the beginning, a little bit of weighing food is ok to learn how much you eat, but don't overdo it. If you come to the point where you wnat to eat more (or less) but can't because your meal plan says 134.7g of beans, you belong into a nuthouse. ;D

i agree
I'm doing it now just so i have a bit of an idea how much calories some portions contain.
I had no idea before how many calories were in certain meals.
Usually it's before. But sometimes you can do it after as well.
E.g. 100 g rice gives around 200 g after it's cooked. 100 g spaghetti gives me 250 g after cooking
-
Always after cooking..
Meat, potatos, sweet tats will shrink aprox. 2 oz. after cooking
Some carbs (rice) will double... 1 c. uncooked will go to 2 c. after cooking.
Good idea to place weighed out portions on you plate until you get the idea of portion sizes. Then no need to weigh unless you are shooting for exact calories/grams/oz's.

I think you should weigh it before hand. If you over cook something it will shrink due to a loss of mositure.Im talking meat here.
100g chicken (un cooked) = 24g Protein
If you take that 100g and cook it , it will prob shrink down to about 70g but will still provide that same amount of protein.
100g Cooked has more protein per g than un cooked.
The same as if you take 100g uncooked rice and now cook it and it swells to 250g , it will still provide the value of 100g and not 250g.
The raw uncooked values are what you work with , not the cooked , once its cooked it will change the weight of the item with either a loss or gain in water weight.
Correct me if im wrong here but thats how I understand it.

STFU, fat bitch.

I don't weigh my food at all. Very rarely do I even measure portions when cooking (just eyeball it).
-
i weigh everything, even the candy i eat ;D

Most people overestimate when eyeballing. That creep factor starts to work its way in :-\ Weigh or measure your food occasionally to reign yourself back in when dieting. I know it's not that big of a deal with you bigger guys who eat so much more, but for someone like me, 3 ounces / 85 grams isn't that much and its so easy to eyeball it into much more :-*

Very true. I don't do a ton of detailed cooking that requires a lot of measuring though (most of the time I just wing it). I used to run a kitchen years ago in college so I got good at estimating & such. Another problem is that I'm so OCD that if I start measuring a few things I'll have to measure everything I'm cooking & that would make me crazy.

haha, you've just described Arnold jr. lol!
On the topic at hand, if you're dieting, I mean really dieting, not measuring your food is a big mistake.
If you're bulking and tend to need to be carefull about adding on extra bf, not measuring your food is a bad idea.
If you're not dieting, if you're a hardgainer, or just someone who has a crazy fast metabolism, then sure, who cares, eat up. Most people though do not fall into this category...many think they do but they are usually wrong.
