Don't say I didn't warn you.

supposedly the soy also makes kids look younger than they are, as evidenced by 1988+ or so when they started adding soy to all the milk thats given to young babies. Like if you look at 18 year old kids today, they look like they are 14 or so for the most part
-
that's interesting, not sure how legitimate the claims are and it didn't really say a number as to how much dosage is unhealthy. i want to know numbers!

"will may you GAY" ?
wtf has this dude been smoking.

I believe most of the recent studies are showing the opposite.
The phyto-estrogens are appearing to have a selective estrogen re-uptake modulation. The soy estrogen is similar enough to the human estrogen receptor to create a weak binding effect. This minimal binding actually deactivates the estrogen receptor much in the same way tamoxifen binds and nulls the estrogen receptor.
This is likely much of the reason why European bodybuilders seem to maintain so much more offseason hardness than their American counterparts. The high level of soy protein powder intake (as it is easier to find here in the EU) is creating very low estrogen levels. This is providing a myriad of benefits.
The lowered estrogen production is partially offset by the weak binding of the estrogen receptor. In summation, all the positive effects of estrogen, as well as the positive effects of blocking estrogen are realized in one product.

never heard of a bodybuilder who takes a lot of soy protein powder.

Ruhl.

how do you know

wait 2 years before determining anything about soy. The studies keep contradicting each other based upon the hypothesis presented.
-
stick to whey protein that we know is dangerous. :D

There are vegatarian bodybuilders... Not saying they look that great. I think most of them are natties too.
Personally, i throw in some soy now and then for some variety. Wouldn't use it as a staple protein source though.
Read that it has similar qualities as casein.

I've had this thought as well, but i don't know if this is really true. Probably just in my mind.
You also have to consider that a lot of kids nowadays survive on simple carbs and unhealthy fats.
What IS true definately is that the puberty age of girls keeps going down. Don't know if this correlates to soy. There are a lot of other chemicals (in plastics, beauty products, shampoos, cleaning products, ...) around us that have estrogen-like activities.

Thats what the hippies want you to think..

no, that's just a natural part of getting old. when I went back to a college reunion, I wondered aloud when they starting letting in 14 year olds.
Television doesn't help, as most of the actors playing high school kids (especially the extras) are all in their 20s. (all sorts of restrictions on how many hours you can work a teen that don't apply to adults)
-
With the prices of Whey sky rocketing look for Soy or some Vegetable Protein to be the next big thing!!!

Yeah, hippies want you to think that soy will make you appear harder in your offseason as a professional bodybuilder. ::)
What hippies really want you to think is that as a "beener," you should be proud to carry a leaf blower to work. They also want you to bring back some peyote from your next trip back to neuvo Laredo.

IT's TRUE!!! Don't believe the hype. Stay away from Soy......RUN!!!!!!!

Well this explains Leafy Slug.

Soy must not be that bad for you. The most studied, longest-lived people (The Okinawans) on earth eat soy products just about every day. It's also very rare to see heart disease, cancers, and other common probs. associated with a Westernized diet in the elders of their culture.

Soy is actually very good for your "health", more specificaly for women.
As for bodybuilding, SOY SUCKS!!!! Very low amount of BCAA's and Glutamine and a horrible PER.

They also eat alot of seaweed and fish, two things very beneficial to long life.
You won't see them eating beef that's for sure.

True, they take fish in moderation. With fish you have to be careful about the mercury levels. Especially farmed fish.
Sadly enough, the younger Okinawans are starting to adopt a more Westernized diet. Those youngsters are starting to have the same health probs. as American children.

Things like wild salmon should be okay in moderation. The prob. is the farmed fisheries inject them with chemicals to keep them presentable for the consumer. Fish kept in captivity do not have the same value of nutrients and even start to lose their color.
Bodybuilders will disagree, but really chicken isn't that great for you either. It's better than some cuts of beef sure, but it's not as good as a diet centered around fruits and vegetables with little animal products. The healthiest and longest lived peoples in the world live off of diets centered around whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Studies like the China Study (among others) show that diets high in animal products tend to be linked to cancer.

If I had to live 100 years looking like Moby, I'd rather just die of cancer.

but other studies show it's not the animal products, but the lack of fiber in the diet. add psyllium and other things high in soluble and insoluble fiber to your diet and the cancer risk decreases.

I don't believe that because what these studies were alluding to was the high saturated fat content found in animal-based diets. Obviously if you lack essential nutrients such as fiber you are at increased risk of diseases as well. Fiber has also been shown to reduce the risks of cancer but that doesn't change the fact that diets high in saturated fat are unhealthy for you.

Saturated fat creates cholesterol, cholesterol creates androstenendione, androstenendione creates testosterone.
I'd rather have a usable penis than avoid the primary nutrient that makes a man, a man.
-
Soy is bad because if you eat soy you're a hippie, and hippies suck.

Think about that. Saturated fat clogs arteries. Stay on a diet like that and you won't be doing anything but wishing for the days when Mr. Wiggly would wake up. In many instances men who suffer erectile problems are able to fix it just by changing diet alone. Chances are, unless you are up there in age you have all the testosterone you need to be healthy anyway.

Bill Pearl...won a few comps ::)...vegetarian...also fasted 1 day a week (another BB myth)....and he looked like shit...probably was gay too... ::)

Thankfully, there's Vitamin Shoppe, which carry its own brand of whey protein powder (from the BodyTech line) called Whey-Tech. A 5-lb. jug costs $25.
As far as soy goes, someone here already mentioned it, but a lot of old-school bodybuilders, including 4-time Mr. Universe, Bill Pearl, consumed their fair share of soy.
-
Plus, soy protein, at times, goes on sale for as little as $20 for a 5-lb jug. Except for its sandy texture, it tastes pretty good, especially the last brand I used, GNC Soy Protein 95 (Banana flavor).
